Re: Upgrade to 19.1

Apply all Level 1,2,3 updates. Click on the Update Manager icon in the panel. Click on Edit and it should show at the bottom, "Upgrade to Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa. Then follow on screen instructions. That's it.

Re: Linux Mint 17.x reaches end of life in April

Mint 17.3 is by FAR Mint's very best release ever. Everything just works! And with a LOW memory footprint. Once everyone jumped on the bandwagon and went to GTK3 and Sysyemd, things went downhill with 18.x and 19.x. The Distrowatch hits over the past 2 years confirm this. Everything became more slug...

Re: Top Panel - Move Items from Bottom Panel

The Notification Area icon only adds the wireless icon, not the Update Manager icon. This is so much easier to do in at least one other Xfce distro. I guess if I really want the Update Manager to be on top then I'll have to reinstall.

Top Panel - Move Items from Bottom Panel <SOLVED>

I am testing various Xfce distros including Mint. I prefer the panel to be on top. I have been able to move all items from bottom to top except the update manager icon. Is there any way to move this item to the top? I haven't been able to find any option to "add" it to the top panel. Thanks.

Re: Mint MATE 17.3 FAST but 18.3 slow start + slower shutdown

Hi Vilsen, Welcome to Linux and Mint. Ever since Mint 16 came out, Systemd was introduced, along with SysV. Also, GTK3 came in with Mint 18. With Mint 19 they are completely on Systemd according to Distrowatch. That is part of the problem. Have you also gone through your startup programs and uncheck...

LMDE3 Blacklist in Update Manager

This was an issue with the Beta. It is still not working 5 months later. Is there a fix anywhere? Thanks.

Re: [How To] Dual Boot Linux Mint Cinnamon with another Linux Distro.

To jeffk969, Over the past 12 years I have found that the Boot Repair disk does not always work. I have run it a number of times and it shows the repair was successful when it really was not. Others to consider are SuperGrub 2 and System Rescue CD.

Re: LMDE 3 Update Manager Problems

Because of thus apparent bug, I have decided not to use LMDE3. It's a real shame that I couldn't even get an answer from a Mint forum moderator. I am currently testing Mint 19 and Ubuntu MATE 18.04 and will probably choose one of them for production when Mint 17.3 support ends.

Re: why are distros never updated?

Hi leafy, Welcome to the Linux world and the Mint forum. If you decide to stay with Linux as opposed to paying ongoing exorbitant amounts of $$ for Windoze or Mac, then get used to updates. It is part of the Linux distro world. Based on my past experience with Windoze from 1993-2016, you will spend ...

Re: <SOLVED> External DVD Drive

I bought the LG Electronics 8X USB 2.0 Super Multi Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer Drive on Amazon. Works like a charm! It appears that the internal DVD drives on two of my Thinkpads are on their last legs. Thanks again for all the advice! :D

<UNSOLVED> LMDE 3 Update Manager Problems

Running LMDE 3 MATE on my test box. Blacklisting any packages in Update Manager does not work. I also right clicked "Ignore Updates for this package" AND Lock Version in Synaptic but I'm still getting updates to install for blacklisted packages. I don't recall, but wasn't this supposed to be address...

Yes. I found this answer in another thread about wireless. I was trying to remove the DVD drive looking for the release button and I must have turned the wireless button off. Thanks for your help!

<SOLVED> Linux Mint 19 MATE - No Wireless After Running Level 1 & 2 Updates

Just installed LM 19 MATE on my Lenovo Thinkpad T420 test box. Ran Level 1 & 2 updates and wireless stopped working. Is this a known bug in LM 19? There was also a wireless bug in LM 18 which still hasn't been fixed. LM 17.3 ran flawlessly. Any ideas here? Thanks. UPDATE: Ubuntu MATE 18.04 had the e...

Re: <SOLVED> External DVD Drive

YES!! The Thinkpads have always been built for business. But unfortunately, since Lenovo took over they have fallen in quality. My T61 and T400 weigh about twice as much as my T420 and my wife's T410. Starting with the T430 the Thinkpad line has a cheap chicklet keyboard instead of the great keyboar...

<SOLVED> LibreOffice Spell Checker

I am running Mint 17.3 MATE with LibreOffice 5.0.3.2. I just noticed that the spell checker doesn't work. I have hunspell installed and checked in Writing Aids. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Update: The hunspell-en-us spell checker was not installed. I installed it and bingo - it works now!

Re: External DVD Drive

Thanks for all your responses. I will probably buy an external DVD drive. Since installing the additional media programs I mentioned above I will also try burning a couple more .iso files and see how it goes. I have 3 Thinkpads with DVD burners to test on. Thanks again.
