Re: Poll: Desktop environments

The only real difference I can see between the Cinnamon panel and the Gnome-shell panel is that Cinnamon shows open apps in the panel. And, a Gnome extension does that, in any case. The panels are very different - in Cinnamon it's a busy place for applets and system tray icons you are meant to inte...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I want to like Gnome-shell more than I actually like it at this point. So, I install Mint 13 Cinnamon, move the panel to the top, put a dock on the left, and it dawns on me that it's just like gnome-shell except that it has a traditional menu instead of all those big icons in the Overview. (Gnome co...

Does Minit Restore Config Files After a Crash and Reboot?

Is Mint 13 setup tp restore certrain configuration files after a crash? If so, how do I turn that off? I placed setup details for my Logitech Marble Mouse in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf. Later, I was forced to reboot after an "alt-f2 r" crashed the desktop. After the reboot, t...

Re: How To Change Panel Font Settings?

Well.... Fonts in the panel *were* bold, which is how I want them. Then, they weren't. Thin and weedy all of a sudden. I chhanged what seemed to be the apropriate setting in cinnamon.css -- labeled as panel settings -- to bold and restarted the desktop via alt-f2. Whoops! The panel vanished. Windows...

Re: HOW CAN I REMOVE LINUX MINT

my linux wont even boot now. its says no boot signature in partition it wont let me boot into the linux live cd If your machine is, in fact, trying to boot off the disk in the CD/DVD drive, then that will happen before it tries to boot from whatever OS is on the hard disk. It's been a long time sin...

Re: HOW CAN I REMOVE LINUX MINT

Is your BIOS set to boot from a CD/DVD? If it is, and you have a Windows install DVD in the drive, you should be able to boot into that.

You do not need to remove Mint before installing Windows. Just be sure to partition and format inside the Windows installer.

Re: How To Change Panel Font Settings?

Yes, that's how I did it on mine. I made a copy of the original cinnamon.css and saved it as cinnamon.css.orig. Then I made the following changes in cinnamon.css: stage { /* font-family: Ubuntu, Droid Sans, Trebuchet MS, Liberation Sans; */ font-family: Moderne; font-size: 9pt; color: white; } Noti...

How To Change Panel Font Settings?

Is editing cinnamon.css the appropriate way to change the font and font settings used in the panel?

I notice that cinnamon.css begins with a "font-family: sans, sans-serif" entry. Does that pick up the fonts configured in Cinnamon Settings? If so, which one?

Re: "Additional Drivers" Can't Install NVidia; Boots to Shel

@buzzing robot Thank you very much for your response, but so far it has not worked, but I am still working the problem. You suggest I carefully read and understand Nvidias instructions on installation. So far I have not been able to find them But I am still looking. I am googling for info on this a...

Re: "Additional Drivers" Can't Install NVidia; Boots to Shel

Buzzing robot- Nvidia driver issue Mint 13 I am having exactly this problem, but I am a neeb and do not fully understand how you fixed this. You said: Ok, I pulled down Nvidia's install package, the "run" archive. Pulled down the Nvidia package from where? What is a "run" archiv...

Re: "Additional Drivers" Can't Install NVidia; Boots to Shel

Ok, I pulled down Nvidia's install package, the "run" archive. I expanded it, rather than executing it. I removed and ran "nvidia-xconfig". That created the correct xorg.conf file. I rebooted into X running the Nvidia driver 295.49. It appears Additional Drivers did successfully ...

Re: "Additional Drivers" Can't Install NVidia; Boots to Shel

No. Kernels from the 3.2 and 3.3 series *will not boot* with this, and some other, Nvidia cards, and Nouveau. As soon as an attempt is made to load Nouveau, the boot crashes. The workaround is as I described it: Avoid Nouveau until an Nvidia driver is installed. Some LiveCD installs fail because the...

"Additional Drivers" Can't Install NVidia; Boots to Shell

Big problems here immediately after installing Mint 13 MATE. "Additional Drivers" fails repeatedly to install the proprietary Nvidia driver and, in the process, prevents X from launching. 1. My Nvidia card (550ti) requires the use of kernel boot options until the proprietary Nvidia driver ...

No Grub Edit At Install, Only "Boot:"

Reinstalling Mint 13 and I can't break into the install to edit the kernel parameters. I had the same problem with another install. Holding shift down through the boot process finally got me in. Now, however, a "Boot:" prompt appears, and the boot continues after a few seconds without offe...

Re: Can't Trigger Grub Menu in Mint 13

Thank for the replies. I got in by holding down a shift key as soon as the BIOS was loaded. Running update-grub, etc., weren't options because the system wasn't responding and the screen was black, as mentioned. There is a bug in the 3.2/3.3 kernels. As soon as the boot process attempts to load the ...

Sound Effect Options Grayed Out in Mint 13

Brand new install of Mint 13 Cinnamon here. Sound works, but the sound effects options in the configuration panel are grayed out. Nothing is muted in Alsamixer. I installed PulseAudio Volume Controller. Nothing is muted there, either, but every mute buttons displays a red X in both muted and unmated...

Can't Trigger Grub Menu in Mint 13

What's the trick of getting into the Grub menu in Mint 13 Cinnamon? It was tricky in the RC. I've installed the release from DVD and need to add some boot options to Grub. (My Nividia card + Nouveau = black screen). So far, it's impossible there. I've rebooted 4 times, trying tapping and holding bot...

Re: Why a Debian distro?

Personnally, I think that most Linux software is sufficiently mature that the typical generalist user does not have a compelling reason to fixate on using the very latest code. From an enthusiast and desktop user point of view I would agree so I will be sticking to the Ubuntu based main distro for ...
