Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

@tone303,

Yes, that's all it takes for main Mint. That's the USB configuration I use now. Note again, this will not work for LMDE.

Update Community Website?

Hi. I installed 17.1 Rebecca and love it. But when I went to the Community web site to update my hardware, Rebecca is not available to select yet. I know you all are busy, but I'd like to be able to see how rapidly people transition to the latest, greatest!

Keep up the great work!

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

@LuKePicci, Question: If you are installing to your hard drive (C: in Windows-speak), why are you trying to install a live version? It would make more sense to me to do a full install instead. You could either take over the whole drive or install a dual-boot instance if you need to preserve XP or so...

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

DE doesn't matter. KDE, Gnome, MATE, Cinnamon, LXDE, XFCE, whatever should all work fine. The problem you ran into is a limitation in the FAT-32 file system on your USB stick. FAT-32 only recognizes a maximum file size of 4GB. So if you try to force Unetbootin or any other USB system creator to make...

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

Yes, you can configure a larger persistence partition if you want. This tutorial is only for the LMDE version of Linux Mint, though. It WILL NOT WORK for main Mint. That said, I run Mint 16 Cinnamon on a 32 GB Corsair Voyager USB stick, with half of that reserved for persistence. It's actually simpl...

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

@TomRoche, First, thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you found this useful. Second, I'm no longer using LMDE. I switched to Mint 16. The reason for that was that some of the update packs in LMDE broke my USB installation and I had to start over, several times. I still like the concept of a semi-rolli...

Re: I borked my Cinnamon

Well, if I could drop to the root prompt I would just apt-get install cinnamon-screensaver and reboot. When I boot, all I get is MDM, displaying my username and a password input window. The gear icon only give me access to change aspects of Cinnamon, and I've tried all of them. No desktop, no x, no ...

[SOLVED] I borked my Cinnamon

Okay, this is an admission of a stupid mistake, but I figure the forum is a friendly place to get help. :oops: After successfully installing and tweaking Mint 16 Cinnamon 64-bit to my liking, I installed xscreensaver. I really like the gl-slide show effects, and it impresses my Windows-only buddies....

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

This tutorial only works with Linux Mint Debian Edition. Mint 15 is based on Ubuntu, which uses casper-rw for persistence. It's actually easier to make a persistent USB with Mint 15 than with the Debian edition. If you have the iso downloaded (and course, doublechecked the MD5 sum), you can use Unet...

Re: Can't copy CD...What's wrong?

I just discovered that my copy of Brasero was missing the plugin "cdrdao." I just installed cdrdao with the Software Manager, and now Brasero copies CDs with no problem.

Re: After boot, no computer/home/network icons on desktop

I have the same problem. I can't bring back icons (any right-click functionality on the desktop) unless I logoff/logon. Sometimes I get a good Nemo desktop at boot, but then later it quits (leaving desktop background, but no icons or functionality).

Beats me. If you changed your root password, it should work wherever you need elevated privileges.

Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

Sorry, I hadn't been following this thread lately. I just went through the tutorial again, using kyeshi98's suggested changes, and it worked for me. Thanks, kyeshi98! :) I'll go back and update the OP so this works for Mint 201303. I use Cinnamon, but I'll try to include steps for both Cinnamon and ...

Re: how to clear recent opened files?

In Cinnamon (Maybe in MATE too, but I don't know), if you have enabled Recent Files (right-click on the Menu, select Menu settings, and then check "Show recent files"), the "Clear list" option is at the bottom of the list of recent files. :)

Auto microphone selection and level setting

Hi. I can't get my Mint 14 Nadia 64-bit installation to set my microphone input level correctly without causing loud feedback. I can manually select different hardware and set levels with the Sound Settings, but I would like to eliminate the feedback while using a dock mike. Otherwise, sound is work...

[SOLVED] Re: Linux Mint 14 Nadia - No audio at times (random

@amko,

Thanks. It works dependably now. I had it working by installing qjackctl and its dependencies, but this is a "belt and suspenders" approach I don't mind adding. :)

[SOLVED] Need help setting up MuseScore

I'm trying to transition from Windows 7 Pro/Sibelius to Linux Mint 14/MuseScore for my music composition needs. I've installed MuseScore 1.2, but can't get sound to work for listening to MIDI and other note inputs or for playback. Here are the error messages I see when starting MuseScore from a term...
