Re: OSDisk on Desktop

There is also a way to disable the showing of mounted volumes on the desktop, in Preferences / Desktop Settings.

It's better to solve your issue first but if you mount volumes on purpose (e.g. Windows partition, external drive) and don't want the icons on the desktop that time either, that will do.

Configure CSD windows (gnome 3-like windows)

As you may know Gnome 3 has these kind of Windows which not everyone likes (lol). It's OK, since Mint has worked hard to offer us a traditional choice - this includes the xplayer, xviewer etc. applications. https://afaikblog.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/list2.png So I think we can get along with no n...

Re: Installing Fifth Browser with dependencies/ commandline?

Hi, it's cool that this place is where a web search on how to install it lead me to. There's also a version 0.3 of Fifth that got recently released, that's nice as I thought it was dormant (no release since december) Yes, it's gonna be the chasing game of building dependencies, and building the depe...

Re: Startup Volume - Mint 17.1

Hello, I had the exact same issue with a Xonar DX and I suffered it for like a full year on MATE. But I've noticed a pulseaudio update today, checked the description and here is it, it's fixed! Needless to say the sound could be VERY noisy, I guess not many of us use a crappy $10 pair of logitechs o...

Re: [Request] LM17 Maintenance tutorial

The first 2 commands to get updates is also somewhat ridiculous to do, you get all updates through the Update Manager and believe me, you won't miss any update. It seems even best to use the Update Manager sometimes, when the Update Manager shows only one update - for updating itself, then more upd...

Re: [Request] LM17 Maintenance tutorial

I'm a little uncertain of the cause but Lately I am finding my Cinnamon quite unstable. I have multiple windows in 4 workspaces, far below 20% of RAM and first thing I notice is that google chrome partially crashes then I can't use the terminal or anything then I get a blank screen then I have to l...

Re: Backporting LXDE to Rebecca (17.1) ?

Oh Well, I didn't realize Ubuntu 14.10 was so close and thus 17.1. I'm so used to waiting for some version that's 3-6 monthes away.

Backporting LXDE to Rebecca (17.1) ?

This thread is intended as a feature request or wish. Mint 17.x are intended to bring graphics drivers support, desktop environments : prominently new versions of Mate and Cinnamon, and then newer versions of important or popular software (like VLC, maybe Libre Office, or simply including a more cur...

Re: [SOLVED] Re: How do you DISABLE automount in Mint 14 - 1

Thanks for that thread : did not know "Disks" was in accessories (I have it in Preferences too) and furthermore I used it to clean up the unwanted "volumes" in caja (e.g. "20 GB Volume", "92 MB Volume" etc.) which correspond to older or other system partitions...

Re: Still using Linux Mint 14, 15, or 16? Upgrade to 17 asap

I've noticed that the new Firefox wouldn't come up in updates, so I've ended on this topic. I'm downloading Firefox 31 ESR (slowly) as an interim. I have tried the Backup Tool ("Outil de sauvegarde"), software selection first. It's fine, I can do that stuff with the command line but it's g...

Re: How is "Point Release" Ubuntu 14.04.1 handled in Mint?

I am sure it is doable to install the kernel from ubuntu 14.04.1 in mint 17, if only by grabbing the .deb package that should be named linux-image-this-or-that. I'm sure it won't be 'supported', i.e. you're on your own but it should be fine with nothing changing system-wise except for that buggy dri...

Re: Alternative lightweight login manager?

lxdm is another login manager, similar to slim. I like it. I had to install slim on a Debian 7 PC though, because lxdm wasn't available (it is in Ubuntu and its Mint derivatives) It's probably no so updated either too, but I can't see where's the issue with that. Lightdm was an unskinned, very ugly ...

Re: How to put shortcut on desktop/toolbar to open nemo with

If you can create a launcher, then having nemo or any file manager start at the desired directory is very easy, you have to give the directory as argument. From the command line you can try : nemo /some/path you can look at command line options : man nemo (not many options, you can set the window si...

Re: Maya 13 Xfce LTS - how long is the support

I can't speak for everyone, but hopefully, in my case, the next LTS release would have better support for older hardware (circa 2005+ and newer) compared to Mint 14, because all my attempts to upgrade to 14 have been less than stellar... in fact, it won't even boot after either dist-upgrading or do...

Re: [SOLVED] Is there a problem leaving multi partitons on s

Nice that you had a fat32 partition, it's the old school way of interoperating. I remember having one with the DOS and being able to boot it (it was a Windows XP / DOS dual boot) For your original idea, I thought you could have mounted the Windows partition as read-only, this way you don't care that...

Re: Permanent Installation on a SD Card

You can consider having a swap partition on the hard drive, and none on the SD card, that way the OS that boots from SD will hopefully mount the swap on hard drive. Might be worth trying to have an ext4 /home partition on the hard drive too! On the SD's "/" file system you might want to us...

Or try setting the gamma : xgamma -gamma 1.2 for instance (btw I tried this on a laptop with a very outdated ATI graphics, it did gamma correction on the laptop display but not on the external CRT where I wanted it most) Gamma is great : it makes the picture brighter without disnaturing the colours ...

Re: Improve grapgic display on netbooks?

/edit : I was wrong, GMA 3150 still is Intel graphics (just a very cut down version of it). The video known for the worst problems are GMA 500, GMA 600 etc. Still a GMA 3150 is worse than an older GMA 950 I think, there it's the hardware that is stupidly slow, not the driver. Drivers for PowerVR gr...

Re: Capitalizing home directory names?

I disagree The best decision Microsoft ever made was to put a space in "program files", to prevent programmers from assuming they don't have to care about spaces. On linux, you can escape space characters on the command line (have them be preceded by a \ character) as well as apostrophes a...

How dare you ask, it's addressed in the release notes  copy-pasta from the Minte 14 KDE release notes (same message is repeated at each release of an edition) CD images Because of the size of the content, and the fact that a vast majority of systems nowadays can either boot from DVDs or from U...
