Re: 'error no symbol table' [SOLVED]

GRUB now seems healthy again; thanks for your patience. (Does GRUB stand for 'grumpy rheumatic ugly bachelor'?)

Re: 'error no symbol table'

Yes, there are GBs of RAM which suddenly appeared right after my first cup of coffee! The Gateway SX2380 is younger than I am, only about 8 years old, about 9% of my antiquity. Here's the message after trying to reinstall GRUB: 'grub-install: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda.. Check your...

Re: [SOLVED] multiple windows disappearing in Mate 19.1

OK, so its been a long time since I upgraded to a new version! ...and old age is finally catching up!
I added the 'show windows' app to my Panel and 'I Can See Clearly Now'.

[SOLVED] multiple windows disappearing in Mate 19.1

I recently upgraded my desktop from 18.3 to 19.1 and am now losing open windows. To clarify, I used to open or highlight a window to bring it to the top, not closing any other window or its related program unless I clicked the 'x' button ordering it to go away. Now windows seem to close when I try t...

Re: MAJOR HDD cleaning - duplicates and comparator program tips and requests

I have a similar situation to taith. I'm running Mate 18.3 on my main machine. A clean-and-scrub utility would be very helpful.

remove duplicates in old backups

I have many old backup folders on external HDs which I would not use to restore currently but which contain many duplicate files and also some ancient files archived, also probably duplicated. I'd like to consolidate these old folders to gain HD space, retaining one copy of all those old files. Is t...

Re: keyboard hard to read

Thank you but the problem is that the white pigment in the characters of the keyboard is very subtle, not bright.

Re: keyboard hard to read

The keyboard is clean; the machine is in almost-new condition. It is a laptop, obtained to be portable.

keyboard hard to read

I recently obtained an old but nice HP Elitebook 8530p laptop (and installed Mate 19), which seems plenty of machine for my usage, but the lettering on the KYBD is dim: my aged eyesight may be the real problem, but compared to the letters on my desktop KYBD the Elitebook causes me problems. The dimn...

T-Bird misbehaves [solved]

I run the latest update of TB (60.2.1) on Mate 18.3 (always updated). Recently TB has started reversing the alphabetical order of addressbook lists and changing the font within a message being written. These are not major problems, but are below my historic experience with an excellent application. ...

Re: HP 4650 will not print - Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon

I use an HP 5530 and sometimes have a problem wherein the printer loses its 'enabled' status for whatever reason. As soon as I right click on the printer and check 'enabled' printing starts.

Re: Linux sends job to printer, printer does not print

I've often had a similar problem (Mate 18.3, HP all-in-one) and always found that the printer had somehow lost its 'enable' setting. Simple fix but aggravating.

Mint 19 v2

Is it necessary to reinstall this over v1 or do the updates cover the issues? As I remember the V2 was a nasty rocket bomb in WWII.

Re: Buy Computer with Linux Mint installed

'HP machines can be difficult with Linux'.....I've had several recycled HP Elitebooks (heavy business laptop) and had no problem installing/using Mint Mate...but was confused at all the (important) gadgets on the machine which an ordinary guy didn't need: docking, fingerprint, firewire, etc.

Thank you, but I am Mint-based and wonder if our OS uses certain capabilities of this machine, like the fingerprint function.
I've always found Mint users to be polite and helpful to an eager fellow user, and always appreciate their good advice.

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

Is there (or could there be) an "official' sticky instruction for safely saving /home for insertion to Mint 19, when it is released. I have moderate talent, but am always willing to become smarter!

HP Elitebook 8350p

I've recently obtained this business machine and am both impressed and confused. It has a Centrino2Duo processor at 2.1 MHz and 4 GB RAM, with Mate 18.3 (4.13.0-41) and seems to run perfectly for my light use w/o crunching or heavy graphics. Here are some questions perhaps someone using this machine...
