Re: Linux Mint on old Gateway Desktop

I have the same machine, but with 7 GB RAM, and it works very well with Mate 19.3.
You may need to change the BIOS setting to boot from the USB.

Old Tractor guys find Mint

I read the Antique Tractor Email List because I used to enjoy using old tractors, just as I use and enjoy old computers. Recently many of the members have become interested in loading/using Linux on their computers, with the predominant favorite being Mint Mate. Most recent is info about installing ...

Re: HD 'Not a Folder' error message

fstab didn't turn out too well: /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5). # # <file system> <m...

HD 'Not a Folder' error message

I have an internal 1000 GB drive used for backup, but am getting 'this disk is not a folder' message and Caja will not allow me to read contents. I'm running Mate 19.3 (updated). The drive is old, like me, but Disks says it is still OK.
Help appreciated.

Re: Running an OS from a flash drive?

I've been using Mint exclusively since 2012. (Up until then I was teaching at a college and got all MS software free!) My plan is to continue with Mint (Mate) on desktop, but if travel resumes after the pandemic, I'd like a really portable capability so I needn't carry even a laptop. I have played w...

Re: Corona virus (COVID-19)

This situation is a reminder that we are all part of the human family, in danger of diseases but also capable of sharing good information and sincere best wishes to each other. Here is my message to my family and friends: 'OK, let's all just be extra careful. When I was a kid, ages ago, we had quara...

Mine is 32bit also. So I guess I should install XFCE 32bit, no? Silly me!
Hi Peter

Mint MATE 18.3 runs really great on the Atom netbook.
Same here, especially after installing an SSD.

Elitebook with original BIOS[solved+-]

My HP 8530p running Mate 19.3 with the 4.15.0.88 kernel on an SSD seems to perform very well but still has BIOS dated 12/08/2011.
Should I worry about seeking a newer version? Does any Elitebook user have advice? I do like this machine.
Thanks.

Re: 'error no symbol table'

Yes, there are GBs of RAM which suddenly appeared right after my first cup of coffee! The Gateway SX2380 is younger than I am, only about 8 years old, about 9% of my antiquity. Here's the message after trying to reinstall GRUB: 'grub-install: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda.. Check your...

OK, so its been a long time since I upgraded to a new version! ...and old age is finally catching up!

[SOLVED] multiple windows disappearing in Mate 19.1

I recently upgraded my desktop from 18.3 to 19.1 and am now losing open windows. To clarify, I used to open or highlight a window to bring it to the top, not closing any other window or its related program unless I clicked the 'x' button ordering it to go away. Now windows seem to close when I try t...

I have a similar situation to taith. I'm running Mate 18.3 on my main machine. A clean-and-scrub utility would be very helpful.

remove duplicates in old backups

I have many old backup folders on external HDs which I would not use to restore currently but which contain many duplicate files and also some ancient files archived, also probably duplicated. I'd like to consolidate these old folders to gain HD space, retaining one copy of all those old files. Is t...

Thank you but the problem is that the white pigment in the characters of the keyboard is very subtle, not bright.
