Android alternatives?

Hi all! There's something about Android that just really annoys me: control. I have no control over things. Mobile doesn't seem to be so much as "your desktop where ever you are" as "someone else's desktop, the way they think you want it, without the ability to change things". Some of this is to do ...

Linux distributions?

Hi all! I've been using Linux for some time now, and have experimented with different distributions. At the moment, I'm running Kubuntu 12.10, but have tried Debian, Mint and Fedora. I don't consider myself anywhere near "expert" level, but I have got a fair amount of experience with hardware and di...

Old hardware - what to do?

Since hardware is always coming down in price, and since it also quickly becomes obsolete, it seems inevitable that you'll build up a collection of old computers. As well as having my own, I've also been given some stuff by relatives, meaning that I now have 2 laptops and 2 computers that are comple...

Desktop Environment Preferences

Hi all! I've been using Linux solidly now for around two years. The first distribution I tried was Linux Mint (as a user familiar with Windows, it "just worked", with no need to change anything - barely even the need to use the terminal), before migrating over to Ubuntu (I figured since I now had a ...

Re: Java/Minecraft

Still no luck solving this, has anyone had any similar problems and/or can suggest a fix?

As stated, it would be good to know at the very least what it actually is that is wrong, even if there is no fix.

Java/Minecraft

Hi all! I get the following error when attempting to run Minecraft through the kernel (using the java -jar minecraft.jar command). Exception in thread "Minecraft main thread" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/XXXX/.minecraft/bin/natives/liblwjgl.so: /homeXXXX/.minecraft/bin/natives/liblwjgl.so: ...

Re: Java issues?

I've started wondering is this is an issue relating to something more fundamental...(hence why no joy regardless of browser used - even though I wasn't very thorough in testing, since I was getting pretty fed up by that point). I've started a new thread about it here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/vie...

64 bit browser/64 bit plugins?

In Windows, I've switched from using the pre-beta Firefox Aurora to using a build based on Firefox, but written for x64 architecture - Waterfox. Unfortunately, there isn't a Linux build, and emulating just to browse the web seems ridiculous... A google search seems to indicate that thus far Mozilla ...

Re: Java issues?

I clicked on the website link. In Noscript - I "temporarily allowed all this page". Clicked on "Friendly" got to a Chat Room login page where I entered a nickname, pressed submit and just got in a never-ending loop - it just redirected me back to the login page, so couldn't actually get to any of t...

Re: Java issues?

I've seen that thread, I googled before posting. It's just a general installation guide, right? I found the actual version of the site they refer to in the post, also. The installation is sound, I'm relatively sure of that.

Java issues?

Hey all! Following my ill-fated adventures with Mint 12 KDE RC, I've returned to the GNOME version, and have just installed KDE over the top (there's still some messing around to do with the system to get rid of the GNOME packages, but that's another thread...). Generally speaking, I've been much ha...

Re: How To: Upgrade your kernel, painlessly.

I followed the guide, and got the first two packages (linux-header files) installed. The third however (the image) doesn't want to install. I double click on it to run it, but the "Install" button remains greyed out :(. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm running Lisa KDE RC. I continued to reboot...

Linux Mint 12 KDE x64, Software Manager

Hi all! I've just made the switch from Linux Mint Lisa with GNOME to the KDE RC. I've got a problem with the Software Manager built in however... Synaptic still works, but the software manager launches before simply crashing. When attempting to run it from the terminal, the error "segmentation fault...

Skype, Linux Mint 12 KDE x64

Hi all! In the summer, I decided to make the move from Windows to Linux. I tried a variety of distros before deciding on Linux Mint as the perfect one, I love the way it just works . I like to be up to date, so switched to Lisa when it came out. The new GNOME was annoying however, so within the last...
