Re: ZFS hangs up
Fixed it. I downloaded and compiled the idle3 tool here: http://idle3-tools.sourceforge.net/ I found my WD Green 3TB was set to 8s timeout. I set it to 36 mins and power-cycled the drive. Now it is not clocking up the load/unload cycles. I imagine my other drive died because of an excess of cycles. ...

Re: ZFS hangs up
I discovered something interesting that I wasn't aware of. Both of my WD Green drives, which have been in my ZFS mirror for a year or so, have huge load/unload cycle counts: 475000 and 525000. I used "hdparm -B 255" and "hdparm -S 0" to try to disable all power saving activity bu...

Re: ZFS hangs up
The voice of experience.
I am sure Oracle didn't overlook this when designing ZFS so I reckon it must be something to do with the Linux variant and the OS. The hanging up that is. Imagine if this happened in a data centre.
My Linux OS is running off a separate, SSD.

ZFS hangs up
Has anyone else seen this? I have a 2 drive ZFS mirror with WD Green 3TB drives. A few days ago my whole system became terribly slow. Today I discovered one of the drives has very slow performance. I ran the Disks program and did a read benchmark...it struggled to do 2MB/s. Fine, I thought, I'll tel...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” Cinnamon released!
I've noticed some problems when running VirtualBox in Mint 18 regarding my cursor not appearing in text boxes in Mint and in Firefox, not being able to close the start menu and/or select things from it. Sometimes unable to resize windows. Also Only by shutting down the Vbox guest is my Cinnamon desk...

Re: Grub issues
When you run "sudo update-grub" is the Windows OS listed in the output?
If yes, then the problem is with the Grub menu...does a Grub menu appear at all or is it that W10 is missing from the Grub menu?

Re: Seemingly nothing about the HACK on these forums - why?
I have the same question! I was expecting to see an obvious link on the home page to an explanation of what happened. I thought there must be a sticky in Announcements, at least. But I can't find anything. It is annoying because this appears to be a security threat to me. According to this http://ww...

Re: Mint/Win10 dual boot *without* UEFI
You don't need UEFI at all. Just upgrade to W10.
Grub will chainload W10 no problem.
I can't recall whether the MBR is affected but even if it is, reinstalling Grub is easy using your live Mint DVD.

Re: Error No Such Partition
It certainly looks like your partition table is corrupted. The partition table is in the first sector (the first 512 bytes of the disk) and is like the table of contents of a book. The actual partition contents may be just fine, if you are lucky. It is now a matter of reconstructing the partition ta...

Re: Error No Such Partition
This means that the Grub bootloader (which is located in the first sectors of your boot drive, in the case of an MS-DOS partitioned drive) is unable to locate the linux partition where it has previously been told to find /boot/grub. This could be for a number of reasons. Here are some off the top of...

Re: dual Booting from external SSD into MBR EFI Bios
Sorry to hear you have been ill. That's never nice. You are definitely not doing something right. I really need to see the output of "sudo fdisk -l" to get a better idea. Could it be that you changed partition 4 into an extended partition and it simply isn't large enough to add logical par...

Oh and while I am spitting (
) I forgot to remind us all that it is Micro$oft that, through greed and technical negligence, made the so-called "computer virus" a global, household term. With Windows 10 we now have viruses and surveillance combined. Nice.

There are two areas I would like Linux to focus on so I and my family are not dependent on Windows nor exposed to insecure cloud services. Re: Your opinions on Windows 10 so far..
It would be naive to assume MS is either trustworthy or competent with your private data. MS has always been an unscrupulous company, starting with deceiving IBM about QDOS' readiness and more recently being heavily fined for breaching European competition law. I imagine that their corporate culture...

Re: SSD difference with Linux?
I advise to apply these tweaks for optimizing your SSD in Linux: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/ssd SSD's are very fast. Have fun! :) I find a perfectly adequate set up is just adding relatime and discard mount options in /etc/fstab. In practice this is all you need as far as I ...

Hi. I'm not sure what is wrong. You could try installing the optimum driver for your GPU. See this guide: http://www.binarytides.com/install-nvidia-drivers-ubuntu-14-04/ The GTX560Ti seems to want the Nvidia 352 driver: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/90279/en-us You might also run...

Re: Should I reinstall to resize partitions
No need to use Windows, this can all be done from a live boot using Gparted. GParted will certainly shrink Windows but it is a blunt tool. It is prudent to use tools specifically designed around Window's peculiarities to be on the safe side, especially when shrinking smaller than Windows will shrin...
