LMDE?

Confession: I am not really a newbie. I have used Linux on and off since v0.9 and LMDE 1 and 2 in the past. I am currently using Debian Buster 10.0 partly transitioned to 10.1 Their system screwed up and had me at 10.0 (I did not know that an unnoticed error message wanted me to give an obscure comm...

Re: setting a path screws up bash

I am not too familiar with Ubuntu, but historically Linux has always had a main configuration file for users, such as bashrc in either /home or /etc. Distros have been putzing with this recently. If you find your version, it wil, or should have default paths defined already within it. Then simply ad...

Resizing Virtual Box VM

I needed to increase the size of my VBox Mint18 VM (In Win7) and naturally, went to google for the instructions. Only to find that nothing really worked. But from piecing together bits and pieces I was able to find the way. The primary difficulty was that my VM had numerous snapshots, and Gparted wi...

VB USB in Mint18

I am running Mint18 in a Win7 VB and its actually running fine. The problem is with trying any kind of I/o I have the usp devices recognized in the VM main setup, but Mint cant see them. It can see the actual USB ports, but says they are empty. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/31726/mount-usb-devices...

Re: WOT in Firefox

I have found WOT to be useful, but it will obviously have alot of false positives, especially on sites with hacking or politically debatable subjects. I always assume ALL 'free' sites will try to sell metadata. Unless a guy is running a server in his bedroom, hosting sites for reasonably popular pag...

Nothing gets automagically added to PATH (at least that I am aware of).

Re: Install windows (dual boot) after Mint is already installed?

+1 for millpond post. Hard disks are inexpensive these days, I'd put each OS on separate disk, otherwise Windows will trash your boot loader. Better still, forget dual booting, you can use VirtualBox to run both OSes simultaneously . Personally, I would not recommend VB or VMWare to a new user. Des...

Re: Would you assist law enforcement?

Here in the Empire if the cops ask you for a backdoor, you are not permitted by law to even speak of the request.
You can refuse.
And you can also get audited.
And kiddie <violates forum rules> found on your machine.

Merde happens.

Re: What is the difference between KDE version and Cinnamon

The 'heaviness' of KDE is due mostly to the Akinadi/baloo/strigi PIM stuff, which is more efficiently replaced by other utils. Unfortunately you cannot uninstall them, though you can turn a lot off in the services manager under 'Personal'. Google for more thorough deactivation. That way i can run it...

Re: Install windows (dual boot) after Mint is already installed?

First of all I would *highly* recommend getting s second hard drive for dual booting. It would be well worth the cost. Then: Remove the first drive, put the second one in its place, and install Win7 on the fresh drive. Then remove the Win7 drive, put the Mint drive where it originally was. Then put ...

Re: Android interface to Linux Mint (as Wine for WIN)

The best solution is VirtualBox as it will run the code without emulation. http://www.howtogeek.com/164570/how-to-install-android-in-virtualbox/ The default install should connect to the net without problem. But you will need to *manually* install the addons for communication with devices and other ...

Re: Virtualbox installed? but nowhere to find.

Two things you need to do: Install the virtualbox guest addons in Mint. That however does NOT actually install it. Use: VBoxManage extpack install --replace [exact name of addons package] To install it. It should also be installed in a Windows version, but google for the GUI instructions on that. It...

Re: Are dark themes or light ones better for the eyes? (scientifically)

The key to avoiding eyestrain is to reduce contrast. Historically for those suffering from eyestrain special books printed on GREY paper with BLACK print have been recommended. I used them as a kid. White on a black background is probably the very worst situtation for eye strain sufferers. Grey or a...

Some idle thoughts as I wait a program to finish up. 1. Whereas I delete Outlook on sight, you probably have a good use for it. Or should. For a decent, if heavy PIM, you can try out the goodies that come with KDE. Akonadi by name. 2. Linux is late to multimedia, though I find VLC blows anything Wi...

Does anyone know the oldest version of Firefox that fully supports HTML5 and does not require their ridiculous and annoying 'ceritfication'. I tried to turn it off in v47 here, but no luck. Re: Removing Nemo

My experience has been that the gui in Linux has problems with moving a large amount of files, and especially with gnome-commander would freeze. I never liked any of the DE file managers. What I would recommend for large transfer is mc. It wont freeze, but it may miss a few, so you may need to repea...
