Re: cant fix tearing in a NVIDIA GPU

I'm guessing your set up is far more powerful than mine, but i found trying a different window manager setting (Preferences, Desktop Settings, Windows, window manager) sorted out tearing in games for me (both native and emulated.. marco + compton for my laptop, but I've read others options work bett...

Acer aspire ES1-311 freezes when full screen, mint 20 MATE

Hello folks, I have searched the web and this forum and it seems to be an issue with acer aspires (I was unsure of post etiquette so if this needs to be merged with another thread please let me know). I first noticed my laptop froze when playing fullscreen video (xplay and also on neetflix via Vival...

Are you using a 32bit version of mint? if so you'll need to install the 32bit version of chrome.

Re: Old MAME version needed

Althought I've been using linux for several years I still prefer to use emulators with gui (I'm lazy!) so I understand your frustration. I have retropie installed on my laptop which includes various versions of MAME (0.37b5, 0.78, 0.94, 0.139 and a few others) as well as fba and neogeo arcade emulat...

Re: Among Us doesn't start

Can you play among us now? I don't understand why this game doesn't run on my computer but everything is fine on my phone. What could be the reason? At a guess your phone runs either android or ios and the game is available for these platforms. If your computer is running linux then that may be the...

Re: Is my netbook compatible with Linux Mint?

My netbook (similar spec) runs Mint 19.3 MATE and it's usable - some things take a while to load and it's a bit slow with things like resizing youtube videos but once it's up and running it's ok. That said the screen res isn't enough vertically to view all of the software centre window but you can s...

Re: SCUMMVM installation problem

This probably isn't going to help but I installed scummvm when I had mint 19, then upgraded to mint 20 and it still works. I've noticed it's in the software manager (which was how I installed in on 19 now I think about it) - is this one of the methods you've tried? I've tried it and it still works u...

Re: Among Us (Steam)

With regards to 'Among Us' you may probably already know but it is available on Android and iDevices (i think it's free to download/play and about £1.70 to remove adverts), so if you have a tablet/phone you can play it on that.

Re: linux mint too slow

For what it's worth I found Xplayer copes better with higher resolution films than vlc or celluloid - I run Mint MATE on a laptop with similar spec to OP (1.6ghz dual core with 4gb RAM) so if it's mainly videos you'll be using the system for then I'd suggest trying that. It can be found in the Softw...

Brave browser is based off chromium, I installed it without an issue using the instructions on the Brave website, might be another option.
Vivaldi is also a chrome (or chromium?) based browser and available in the software centre

initramfs unpacking failed: Decoding failed Paste this into a terminal: xed admin:///etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf Change COMPRESS=lz4 to COMPRESS=gzip Save the changes then: sudo update-initramfs -u and reboot. Thank you; I noticed this error message popping up after I recently upgraded my la...

Re: [SOLVED]19.3 to 20 upgrade broke Clementine

Thanks @firu! Installing akonadi-backend-sqlite also worked for me. It was a simple matter of sudo apt install akonadi-backend-sqlite and after a full library scan I'm listening to Clementine as I type this. I was going to revert to my 19.3 backup and follow Clem's upgrade instructions( https://com...

Re: Vertical or horizontal taskbar?

Vertical for me, on the left side of the screen. My laptop is wide screen (like many now days I guess) meaning I have more space to spare at the sides of the screen that at the top/bottom.
Weirdly though the time/date on mine is on its side (I use the MATE variant of mint which may be why, I dunno)

related only in the sense it was a usb device, I had issues with my laptops wifi when I first installed mint so i purchased a usb wifi dongle that worked when I plugged it on once the mint had booted, but wasn't recognised if I plugged it in before powering on. Have you tried plugging it in once min...

Re: How do i set a keyboard combo to write a special character?

What regmar said - If you go to Preferences/Keyboard then the layouts tab will allow you to add another keyboard and you can then toggle between the two in the panel (that's what happened for me).

Re: Switched to MATE from Cinnamon...now have display issues

I had a similar issue with tearing and looked into ho to resolve it. There is a way to sync the display in MATE using terminal commands (although i still don't really know what i'm doing in the terminal), but one solution I found worked for me was to go to Prefences>Desktop Settings>Window Manager a...

Re: graphics card for Linux, Nvidia or AMD?

Sorry to thread crash (this seems to be my catchphrase), but I had a problem with tearing. I use a low-power laptop (dual core 1.6ghz) with intergrated intel graphics. Anyway, I was looking to see if there was a solution, as the tearing was a bit annoying when watching films and playing games that s...

Re: Emulating Retro Platforms

I installed RetroPie on my LM machine and it works pretty well. Don't be fooled into thinking that it's only for Raspberry Pi's. It uses RetroArch for the actual emulators and EmulationStation to provide a nice front-end launcher. Sorry to thread crash but thanks for the recommendation. I'd been lo...

Re: Looking for love.. and games.

In a similar situation myself and although I realise this isn't what you asked, why not pick up a 2nd-hand ps2? I got one for £20 (then picked up a cheap flat-screen tv for a tenner) - c-ex has ps2 games a-plenty at a reasonable price (burnout included - over the course of getting the ps2 I now have...

Re: Can I install xfce from mate then remove mate in 19.2?

Thanks! I'd like to say I installed that and all went well, but I already had it installed. What I hadn't done was click on the little icon and found the pop-up giving the option to select xfce from the login, so is my face red. So, one last question I promise, if I then remove mate from software ma...
