Re: Asus W202 linux compatibility?
A while back on another forum someone described thinkpads as 'built like tanks', this was a while ago and the newer ones I've seen, though well made, don't seem quite as tough as the x200 era (about 12 years ago) but I'd still recommend one to anyone if you get get it cheap. my main machine is an X2...

Re: Add downloaded application to taskbar
On MATE you right click on the panel, select 'add to panel' and then choose the program (which will hopefully be listed) or you can drag the program from the mint menu and drop it into the panel. Other versions of Mint may differ though.

Re: Can't install mint.
Firstly I'm no expert - this isn't advice more a question; did mint 'install' ok from the usb? I ask as I had an Acer Aspire laptop that had a UEFI boot and it refused to recognise mint that was installed on the HDD until I used the bios to tell the machine that mint was a trusted OS which involved ...

Re: How to customize keyboard layout.
I started learning Swedish a while back and found you can add keyboard layouts ( Preferences-> Keyboard -> Layout) which allows me to type the extra three letters ( [ becomes å, ; is ö and ' ä) it's not ideal but works for me, so it might be worth checking to see if a German keyboard layout has thos...

Re: SSD question?
I got a 500gb kingston SSD for my old thinkpad 201i to replace a same sized HDD a while back and it was a straight forward install from usb stick to get mint running. My boot time increased from just over 2 minutes to around 30 seconds - the SSD I bought isn't the fastest, or possibly the laptop is ...

Re: What's your favorite racing game that runs on mint?
I prefer arcade racers, mainly old ones at that. I play ridge racer/revolution/64 via retropie on my laptop (and, yes, weirdly I do actually own all three games on disc/cartridge). On a more recent arcade racing vein I've been playing a lot of 'hotshot racing' on my switch, which is also on steam (a...

[Solved] unable to get mint to boot on efi laptop - constant reset loop
Hello, I hope someone can assist as I can't work out what I'm doing wrong (probably something simple). I have an acer aspire es1-331 that previously had mint MATE installed on it for some time but over time various packages became broken (my fault) so I decided to perform a clean install - My aim is...

Bluetooth headphone latency - is this normal? [Solved]
Hello. I have a reasonably fresh install of MATE 20.2 on a thinkpad x201i. I connected some bluetooth earphones the other day and noticed there is a small delay in the sound - just less than around .5 of a second, is this normal ? I've tested two separate pairs of earphones and they have the same de...

Re: How Do I load CD-ROM Music on my phone
I've not tried it for this for years as all my cd's are already mp3's on my phone, but does rythmbox not have an option to rip along with a CD database? I know it would be lengthy to do, but easier in the long term for transferring them to another phone. Once you have them on your pc in the format y...

Re: Emulating Retro Platforms
Sorry to post again but after trying retroarch again from the software manager and having no luck (I didn't try the flatpak install which, according to comments on there, works, but I don't use flatpaks), I then found retropie does now work with Mint 20 so installed that (pasting the terminal comman...

Re: Emulating Retro Platforms
I tried retroarch recently and also couldn't get anything to work. It seems it goes by a database for roms, so the rom files need to be from a specific set (the TOSEC ones, I believe - but I could be wrong). Anyway, after trying a few 'properly' named files for various systems (gba, nes, megadrive a...

Re: Auto login asks for password more often than standard login
I noticed the same thing a few days ago when I reinstalled mint on an SSD and forgot to tick the 'automatically login' box. I found it's when you boot up chrome (or vivaldi in my case) - when I used to load it the first time after booting and automatically logging in it would ask for my password, no...

Re: Linux Mint for old 32 bit computer
This may or may not help and I'd advise first having a quick search online for distros that work with older machines (and checking their minimum requirements). I installed puppy linux on an old netbook (admittedly a 64bit machine with 2gb or ram) but that distro has very low minimum spec (a 900mhz p...

Re: Mint MP3 failure
I've not had any issues with mp3, ogg, flac or wav playback on linux .(or sid, mod, ym and sndh come to that) If you want to have a go at anyone for mp3 playback look to Android OS - it STILL doesn't support gapless playback. I thought the windows phones were bad, and that was nearly 10 years ago wh...

Re: Beginner trying to understand all the distro differences
For a new comers there is a bewildering number of distros to choose from, each having several versions within (desktop environments etc, plus there's ones that are based on others, based on others again which makes you, as someone looking into linux, question why not use the original distro the othe...

Re: Scandinavian vowels
As has been said if you add another keyboard layout it will map the letters to other keys. I added the swedish keyboard layout to my UK keyboard and have å, ä and ö under [ ' and ; respectively. Once installed the option to change the language appears in the panel and you can switch between language...

Re: Purged bluetooth, now reinstalled and it's not working Mate 20.1
Thanks for the advice Blaan, I do appreciate it but I purged bluetooth some time ago so don't have a timeshift to go back to and I've tried re-installing from the software manager (both 'bluez' and 'blueman') but still no working bluetooth (it seems as though the drivers (?) install ok, and blueman ...

Purged bluetooth, now reinstalled and it's not working Mate 20.1
A while back as I never used bluetooth on my laptop I foolishly purged it , I would now like to be able to connect a speaker and headphones to it but after trying various methods to re-install it it's not working (blueman installs but quits when I try to open it). I have searched the forum and tried...
