Re: Confused Dual-Boot Options ?

I've used Grub Customizer for years to reconfigure the boot order and either demote or delete choices not wanted: http://tipsonubuntu.com/2018/03/11/install-grub-customizer-ubuntu-18-04-lts/ Take it slowly, can accidentally delete items by moving too far, and I can't vouch for background image chang...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 lost

Good advice about using Live USB to back up important data. There's a chance it isn't a hard drive problem but a GRUB boot loader recognition problem - getting rare these days, but can be easy to fix using Boot Repair, installing it to the Live USB: https://www.howtogeek.com/114884/how-to-repair-gru...

Re: My hands have started to shake.

Some years ago when David Pogue was still the featured tech writer for the New York Times he wrote about having developed carpal tunnel syndrome, and his daily reliance on Dragon voice-input software. This Youtube review gives a lighthearted idea of it (Amazon is listing older versions for substanti...

Re: 32 bit mint 19.1 broswer crashes

While I've dual booted 32 bit Mint for years and currently on old machines, pre-testing live USBs with 64 bit Mint 19.1 is going well. Third party software support for 32 bit compatible apps is winding down, and Chrome browser (with built-in Flash) has been incompatible with 32 bit for a while, thou...

Re: Start-up-time more than fivefold ! Why ?

I'm pushing a decade using Ubuntu / Mint and agree with the OP that the massive increase in start up times (currently installed 19.1 Cinnamon and XFCE 32 bit, testing live USB 64 bit) comes as a shocker on all the 19.1 versions, as compared with M17.x that I ran pleasurably through all its point rel...

Re: [ SOLVED] Some questions about Linux Mint and Windows fast boot(startup).

that type of "shutdown shortcut" has been around for some time: - do remember seeing an similar solution to win-xp, as well. you can even achieve such an 'shortcut' for your Linux System, as well. 8) Mint's choice box for shutdown is much nicer than Windows - the desktop shortcut became handy becau...

Re: [Somehow SOLVED] Some questions about Linux Mint and Windows fast boot(startup).

"Fast boot" is just another terms for hibernation, and booting Linux requires a true full shutdown of Windows. I was temporarily an "Insider" during the beta phase of W10 and used this one-click shortcut to full Windows shutdown, which was otherwise a menu dig: http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=faq-W...

Re: Faster than Mint?

OK. I uninstalled Mint to try Win 10. Still not happy. The laptop is a Latitude E6430 with 6 gb ram and a 500gb SSD. i5-3340m processor. I use this laptop for internet use mostly with wifi only. I get about 70mb/sec on speedtest. Maybe I'm spoiled from using a desktop. Why is XCFE faster? Win 10 an...

Re: Faster than Mint?

I'd have to agree with others, the trade off for "faster" usually means ditching a lot of Mint's good out of the box readiness and refinement. Mint XFCE idles on about half the RAM of Cinnamon (which is now comparable to Windows 7 in resource requirements.) I changed from Cinnamon on M17.3 to XFCE o...

Re: Mint Mate 19.1 unable to create bootable USB Flash Drive

Wasn't aware of Etcher - interesting but I don't see that it enables "Persistence", something the OP or other readers might be interested in depending on what the live USB install is for. Unetbootin will do that, and has been reliable though I haven't used it on Mint 19.x: https://unetbootin.github....

I had good success with this software on earlier Mint, can't say for current Ubuntu / Mint releases:

Re: Unexpected Shutdowns [ SOLVED - Hardware Fault ]

The intermittence as opposed just not working seems the headscratcher. Certainly sounds like an increasing intermittent auto-shutdown problem I had some years ago on a Dell laptop, especially watching video. Knocked myself out looking at more RAM, etc. but turned out to be automated overheating prot...

Re: Beginner Help?

At home your router likely firewalls the PC, with a laptop I'm comfortable that ordinary jerk coffee shop / train station wifi snoops and their tools are not targeting Linux systems. (Been using Android more and more anyway.) The biggest security risk these days is probably phishing scams and phony ...

Re: Optimal Power Management Settings

All PCs, regardless of operating system benefit from being rebooted. Full stop. I'll suspend Mint boxes which are in daily use, but switch them off otherwise. I also reboot after every major system update (e.g. point releases or Level 5 kernel releases) or any large or complicated software installa...

Re: Removed Mint and now only boots to grub

Fully agree about Boot Repair. I've used it successfully with W7 and quick "Recommended Repair" to fix a dual boot failing to recognize Windows. I don't have experience with deleting GRUB and restoring the MBR for Windows 8-10 with UEFI . This link shows more of the MBR functionality: https://source...

Re: [SOLVED] Can't get persistence working on a live usb

Fair enough. I much prefer full install, but I'm not staunchly anti-persistence. One thing you might want to try is mkUSB (link above). Supports a special boot-to-RAM option which reduces writes to the USB. Also sets up the casper partition (not just a file). Cool app, actually. Thanks, I could giv...

Re: Can't get persistence working on a live usb

I experimented with full install to USB a few years ago, didn't work for me. Was it a 2.0 or 3.0 drive? Full install to a 2.0 flash drive isn't worth having. Curiously, a 3.0 drive on a 2.0 port does okay. Not great, but okay. Far and away better, though, is a USB hard drive. Pretty darn cheap thes...

Re: Can't get persistence working on a live usb

Have to say, currently testing 64bit versions of M19.1 on persistent live USB, that it's worth springing for a 16GB thumb drive - current Mint is using nearly all that 8GB for the OS and there isn't much room left for persistence. Can easily crash the system if it's crowded. If using the Windows Pen...

Some websites (diminishing number, but news pages are often behind the curve) still require the Adobe Flash Plugin to play video. If you don't have it, that's a start - it's in the repository. About once every couple months I assume we ae all me included, get an Adobe Flash Plugin update. I have ne...
