Re: Dieing laptop problem

I just booted my system in a live cd. I then opened the file manager and it listed my hard drive (459 GB) and another device (767 MB) which I am assuming is the live cd itself. I clicked the hard drive (459 GB) to mount it and it asked for my password. I entered my password and I got the following ...

Re: Dieing laptop problem

No guarantee, but I'd try booting a live USB of current Mint and see if the laptop hard drive can be mounted in the file manager - files could be transferred to an external drive for safekeeping. Unfortunately there may be permissions issues with the hard drive, depending on configuration. Less like...

Re: Firefox Crashes Daily Poll

"For what it might be worth, my Dell 1520 laptop shipped with 32 bit Windows but I've been able to install 64 bit Mint, currently M18.3 with no problems at all" hmm? didn't know that was even possible? I went for years on the same wrong assumption. My best advice is always to create a persistent li...

Re: Is a software like this available for MINT?

Thanks for the tip about Autokey, just trying it. I had to separately install the GTK package along with Autokey itself to get the launch icon - using Synaptic PM, not sure if Mint software manager handles that. The FAQ indicates the .config Autokey file can be moved or copied, so it won't be necess...

Re: Create new empty document/file with keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-T

all41, Sorry that I wasn't clear. I want the new document to appear in the open Nemo window, just as Shift-Ctrl-N does for a new folder. In other words, I don't want xed to open up. What I want to happen is for a new document/file to appear in the open Nemo Window and any further keyboard presses w...

Re: switching from w10 to mint,in preparation,several things i want suggestions for,please

It looks to me everything you want to do can be thoroughly pre-tested on a persistent live USB install of Mint without wiping Windows or risking the time and trouble of an inadequate Linux install. I use the Pendrive installer to create a Linux boot 16GB thumb drive for any new Mint version before i...

Re: Trying to set up on-line banking

UK Firefox users should keep an eye on the relatively new settings for "DNS-over-HTTPS" that might be interfering with how some sites work - odd to me that Chrome would behave the same: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/sep/24/firefox-no-uk-plans-to-make-encrypted-browser-tool-its-default ...

Re: Browser Issues maybe Linux Mint problem

I'm still running M18.3 XFCE (64 bit) on an old Dell laptop we use for bedroom media, and have had a problem with FF freezing the system if left on overnight. Uninstalling and deleting .mozilla, then reinstalling from the Mint repository seems to have fixed it, so far. Note that I have a Firefox acc...

Re: I did lose my grub2, what to do?

It's been a while, but I've had good success in the past with Boot Repair, single click to fix (rare) GRUB misreads on dual boot machines. Mr. Lefebvre and the development team have seen fit to preinstall it on Mint 19.2. If the PC isn't booting, before opening the hood and unbolting things, I'd try...

Re: Libre Office not printing

Back to my Desktop PC after a week or two cooling off period. I am running Zorin O/S on my main laptop. Everything working fine again with the old desktop. It's remarkable how switching off and on can often cure these digital issues. Thanks very much for all the helpful replies - I hope that others...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

Having used PCs since the 1980s and Ubuntu / Mint since 10.04, and read up about it, frequent shutting down and rebooting is a) healthy refreshment for any operating system, especially after system or large software updates, and b) does no harm to hardware. All my current PCs have lasted nearly a de...

Re: First Post - New to Linux - Some 'noob' questions

Stepping back, I'd suggest pre-testing Mint using a DVD-ROM is about the worst way, because read/writes are unrealistically slow, and every time you reboot you lose all your settings and installed apps. You appear to be running Windows, probably the most intuitive way to set up and pre-test alternat...

Re: Libre Office not printing

Could it be a problem with the black ink in the printer? If ink cartridge is recently replaced, make sure that te piece of tape is removed (this affct many ink printers, not neccesary all). What happens if you export to PDF, and then print from the exported PDF file ? I think this approach is right...

Re: Can malware jump from Windows to Linux in a dual boot set up?

My main concern would be for browsers and browser based email or messaging services, which can be cross platform (like Firefox, Opera, or Chrome/Chromium) and be synchronized between boots. I run malware scans on Windows, that might detect a bad extension or hack on that OS, but nothing similar woul...

"Play Store web page clicking the Gear icon (upper right) that install turned up as a new device in the list - you ought to check to confirm." Somebody else may be familiar with the Anbox software, googling turns up the following that indicates Play Store connectivity may be harder to do than locating a reliable site for downloading APKs and installing that way: https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/07/anbox-how-to-install-google-play-store.h...

Re: Add screen resolution 1920x1080 permanently

I agree with others, above, except I don't muck with the .profile executable file, but instead create a separate file named .xprofile exclusively for the one monitor's settings . For my Samsung monitor the CVT output was <Modeline> "1904x1200_60.00" 191.00 1904 2032 2232 2560 1200 1203 1213 1245 -hs...

Re: GRUB Menu

Haven't used on current Mint releases but this worked fine last time I wanted to modify GRUB:

It's almost too easy, so don't make changes before thinking it through.
