Re: Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

Well Android DOES also use a Linux Kernal (I know it's kernel I'm just used to how The8-bitGuy says it.)
Except that Google has arranged it so that it is difficult or impossible to implement a hosts file in android without root access!

Re:SOLVED Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

I wonder whether I should mark the problem solved when we have no idea how or why it was solved; beyond the obvious THERE ARE TOO MANY ADS ON THE INTERNET

Re:curious set of circumstances to report on supposed trackpad problem

I have a curious set of circumstances to report on this trackpad driver problem. It may be of use to newbies, though I suspect most people here would know about it. I didnt find my windows boot disc so havent updated the bios yet. But I was getting exceptionally annoyed by the constant page jams, cu...

Re: Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

So I should just extract the bin file from the BIOS update, put it on a USB disc and see if it can be seen when I go into the BIOS, if there is some facility within the BIOS for it to update itself? Otherwise boot to a UBCD or Hirens live disc and see if I can access the exe file from there? I got t...

Sorry to ask this again, but is there no way of updating the trackpad driver?

The cursor operation seems to be getting worse: It jumps all over the place (despite the hypersensitive trackpad being set to minimum sensitivity and speed), touching the trackpad sparks a myriad of responses, all equally inconsistent. It doesnt seem to recognise where it has been touched, sometimes...

Re: Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

You are running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit machine with 8G of RAM. Whatever else, certainly that alone says "reinstall" already. Yes, I hadnt noticed that but the Vaio was indeed a very old computer so I did a "something else" install of the 64 bit version. Which for th first time lost my old data in ...

Re: Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

I'm not so much of a newbie that I dont know I can do a format-install! But I was just wondering if I could correct this installation. sudo apt-get upgrade told me to do an autoremove, which took a long time to run (!) and removed quite a lot. The inxi command (without a restart) gave me: dm@dm-VGN-...

Is there any way of checking a mint installation?

Is there a way of re-installing OVER a mint installation like you can do with Darwin please? I have a catastrophically unstable 19.1 installation on my HP Pavilion DV7. The desktop/browser is highly unstable, the cursor jumps all over the place, as does whatever the background is under the cursor, w...

Re: hundreds of errors upgrading from 18.3 to 19

Well it ran to completion but when it demanded reboot, wasnt happy about something because the desktop now comes up and is within a half second covered with garbage. Curiously there is no longer any GRUB screen to enter recovery nmode, nor anywhere to enter any NOACPI or VGAONLY switch. Pressing spa...

Is this just one locale error multiplied numerous times?

No I didnt, - I saw there was a way of running 19 live but I wasnt sure how I can extract some of the errors, in case it helps? before It stops with gconf2 gconf2 gconf2 gconf2 gconf2 gconf2 gconf2 Processing was halted because there were too many errors. E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an err...

hundreds of errors upgrading from 18.3 to 19

Upgrading from 18.3 to 19 takes a pretty normal amount of time (30-45 minutes?) but I get a log of pages and pages of what I assume are errors. Then the upgrade stops and tells me to check the errors listed above and correct them before trying the upgrade again! But I can't identify any of the page ...

Re: Bad Sectors on HDD??

I have a similar problem on a 750gb drive in a secondary computer. Very secondary. In the sense that there is nothing to lose. It has been failing SMART for about six months but otherwise everything seems OK?? no slowness, no temp alerts, no data loss, and the drive passes all other tests. So I hav...

tools install seems to have gone wrong?

I just installed 18.3 and as usual installed tools after install had finished. I am pretty sure it installed I now get CANCEL TOOLS INSTALLATION grayed out in the Virtual Machine menu, on all subsequent reboots, which I thought was normal? But I cant share folders in the host?? I can enable the fold...

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

ANYWAY This might well have solved the problem temporarily, I upgraded to 18.3 (kde, 64 bit) and the cursor was working on the black splash screen. But once the system fired up, touchpad stopped; and, - as far as I can see, the system is otherwise stable. Curiously, on reboot, update manager is offe...

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

No, this might be a driver error, I already have bios 208.

(FWIW the date is 2013 but easyflash wouldn't let me flash the American Megatrends 208 dated 2015 so I assume they are the same)

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

I did try looking for any updated (even beta) kernels to try to address this problem but couldn't find any, so I wondered about changing the driver.

When I paste that, I get:
4.10.0-42-generic
