tools install seems to have gone wrong?

I just installed 18.3 and as usual installed tools after install had finished. I am pretty sure it installed I now get CANCEL TOOLS INSTALLATION grayed out in the Virtual Machine menu, on all subsequent reboots, which I thought was normal? But I cant share folders in the host?? I can enable the fold...

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

ANYWAY This might well have solved the problem temporarily, I upgraded to 18.3 (kde, 64 bit) and the cursor was working on the black splash screen. But once the system fired up, touchpad stopped; and, - as far as I can see, the system is otherwise stable. Curiously, on reboot, update manager is offe...

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

No, this might be a driver error, I already have bios 208.

(FWIW the date is 2013 but easyflash wouldn't let me flash the American Megatrends 208 dated 2015 so I assume they are the same)

Re: Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

I did try looking for any updated (even beta) kernels to try to address this problem but couldn't find any, so I wondered about changing the driver.

When I paste that, I get:
4.10.0-42-generic

Do I need to upgrade 18.2 to 18.3 to get Asus Synaptics drivers to work?

I have been having massive problems with the touchpad on my Asus X750JB in 18.2. The cursor basically works (and I have tested it again in windows) but jumps all over the place and adjusting sensitivity doesn't seem to help. Asus recommends dumping the synaptics driver in windows for something calle...

Re: Windows virus still does SOME damage in Linux

Yes, it does appear to be necessary to explain that resetting firefox to defaults includes losing all work, tabs, passwords, configurations and introducing Yahoo malware into my computer: Heck, even gmail now has a screwed up, completely alien and totally non-intuitive look which seems to have been...

Re: Windows virus still does SOME damage in Linux

rm -v -R ~/.mozilla Press Enter. Well that was absolutely catastrophic! Though it may have got rid of the malware, - as has been pointed out to me, IF I had it. But this is my fault because I am not sure why I followed the destructive instructions after i had refreshed firefox and that SEEMED to ge...

Windows virus still does SOME damage in Linux

Anyone know how to get rid of the ActiveDiscount virus please? ClamAV doesnt seem to remove it and my experience is that none of the half dozen windows AV programs [except Zoek] can find it. I dont suppose there is a way of effectively running Zoek in linux, is there? Ii got it by following a 2012 l...

yeah but is this cause or effect?

WELL SPOTTED!! Though my lateral stinking antennae arent equipped to know whether this is cause or effect. I can boot up, the system scans, logs on and if I press the networking icon on the lower right, the system can see a half dozen networks. As little as eight minutes later, the signal is dropped...

Re: What does it mean when 18.1 mate doesnt see wifi networks?

Sorry to bother you all with this question. I can see no conceivable reason why the scanner can see no networks either in fully updated 18.2 or using an old 17 live DVD. This is the result of the command: $ inxi -Fxzd System: Host: dm-VGN-AR170G Kernel: 4.4.0-87-generic i686 (32 bit gcc: 5.4.0) Desk...

Re: What does it mean when 18.1 mate doesnt see wifi networks?

I tried booting off an old 17 live disc, so using an elderly kernel and the results are the same. No wifi networks seen But something is definitely interfering with the scanning function. I invoked the 'update drivers' section of the Welcome Screen and updated the NVidia and something called the Int...

Re: [SOLVED] No option to "Install Mint Alongside WindowsXP"

Well I have often completed installation in this way after install didnt tell me that it has found windows on the drive and cant remember the last time anything went wrong. But you are suggesting that putting a note on the gpartd page saying not to worry and that install will pick up the windows OS ...

Re: What does it mean when 18.1 mate doesnt see wifi networks?

Thanks for that jveen, I have been trying to identify the problem since you posted but with no joy. I did try sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf but with no success. The problem is partly that I am using an intel prowirele...

Re: I have often wondered why install was so confusing on this point?

Is that really all there is to it when install doesnt see the windows OS at the beginning of the installation procedure? Just let it resize the partition as it suggests, proceed with the installation; let it finish / install GRUB? After which it will automatically see the windows OS and set up GRUB ...

What does it mean when 18.1 mate doesnt see wifi networks?

I am having massive wifi problems with my Vaio VGN-AR170. The system does (or did) fundamentally work but I live in an apartment building where every one has their own network yet my system doesnt see any more than one or two networks at a time! It logged on and off mine (pretty much automatically) ...

Re: What does it mean when live cd install can''t see OS?

I can turn raid off in the BIOS and then I suppose I shall never be able to boot xp again, which is no loss. Especially once I have installed a far superior and ten years newer mint 18! WIth a system this complicated, I suppose I must wipe out the whole xp installation. But there does seem to be a r...

is RAID a problem in mint installs or is there some special procedure to obviate this partman error message?
