Re: LMDE-2 cinnamon bad iso?
Thank you very much for the replies. What made me ask was that I did notice that on... https://haveibeenpwned.com/ ...it listed both the Facebook and the Linux Mint hacks as references for my pwned email. I don't know how much information that site obtains, or how, but it made me think. So I thought...

LMDE-2 cinnamon bad iso?
Was there complete resolution on LMDE-2 as to whether or not it was involved with the "backdoor" installed in the Cinnamon Mint ISO file (sometime in the last year or so)? I've read a lot, but unfortunately am not really able to decipher for sure whether the LMDE-2 install I did earlier this year (a...

Re: VirtualBox Guest Additions
What I've noticed is that different distros behave differently as guests. Opensuse, LMDE-2, and Whonix guests both seem to work correctly (window behavior, resizing, shared folders) without mounting the Guest Additions virtual-ISO under the guest and running the Guest Additions installer (within the...

LMDE-2 looks really good
Hi LMDE-2 users! I just installed LMDE guest under virtualbox (virtual machine for security reasons), opensuse host. It seems to work well with virtualbox. Great job!!! Nice to be finally running Debian!

record system sound with Audacity?
Dear Mint Users: I can't seem to record sound from my computer (using audacity under KDE, Mint17x64 on an HP Elitebook 8440 laptop). I listen to sound over the earphone 1/8" phono jack, but the recorded sound is very garbled. I used to be able to do this years ago with Audacity - I know windoz has m...

Re: Wow! Newbie setup
Thank you very much for the replies. In Opensuse at least, you could run at least some Gnome packages under KDE - maybe you can with sysinfo... but the sysinfo package that comes up in synaptic doesn't have everything on one screen in konqueror - so I think it's a different package. This is the one ...

Re: Wow! Newbie setup
You mean KInfoCenter in the System group? That's the KInfoCenter I was talking about - it needs a lot of mouseclicks to get information... difficult to use when involved in struggling with a debugging session or other problematic software... The KDE folks are trying to force us to migrate to that fr...

Wow! Newbie setup
Dear MINT 17.1 KDE users: I'm strongly considering switching to MINT 17.1 KDE as my preferred distro because everything seems to work straight out of the repos on my HP laptops (Snort, wine, Scilab, Octave, wifi, etc.) and VirtualBox machines. So far everything I've downloaded with the Synaptic just...

Re: OS usefulness
Thanks, all! Definitely good stuff there. I'm constantly googling linux commands and such, but since we're all overworked these days, with not enough time, good tools like YaST really help a lot!! I'm going to install Mint KDE 17.1 on one of my laptops tonight and see how it goes. It even looks like...

OS usefulness
I've been looking at OS's again - and saw how well Mint was doing on DistroWatch. Good work, folks! As a KDE user, kubuntu worked for me for a while. But I've always stuck with OpenSuSE (mostly because of YaST) since I've never really gotten the hang of the command line and I depend on forums (even ...

install snort-mysql
Dear LMDE users: I just installed the latest LMDE in VirtualBox and I want to set up snort-mysql. http://www.aboutdebian.com/snort.htm I think the name of the package changed, because I can't find this package (for Debian) in the preconfigured repos. I've never used a .deb distro before, so I'm not ...

Re: package manager in .deb distros
Thanks, Guys! Sorry to wander into the wrong forum.
In RPM-land we have "repos" so I was thinking I needed to add a repo in order to gain access to that package. But not sure how to.
Again, thanks, and sorry...

package manager in .deb distros
Dear LMDE users: I installed LMDE under VirtualBox to run snort-mysql http://www.aboutdebian.com/snort.htm ...but I can't seem to find this package. I have never run a debian derivative (I'm used to RPM distros). How to add wheezy to LMDE's package manager? apt-get doesn't automatically find it... T...

Re: won't boot on HP 17-e016dx ??
Thank you very much for the reply... This from the HP site: AMD Radeon HD 8550G graphics with up to 2158MB total graphics memory So you're saying that the "compatibility mode" means using a generic graphics driver somehow? EDIT: I just tried LMDE and neither regular or "compatability mode" would get...

won't boot on HP 17-e016dx ??
I can't get linux mint KDE to boot on my new laptop unless I invoke "compatibility mode" - so I'm afraid to install it because it might not support my "new" hardware (these are some new laptops - they don't even support Win7 any more). Anyone know why this might be a problem? UEFI? Secure Boot?

newbie kio_sysinfo
I've been searching around for the apps I used on another distro before trying LM. I used kio_sysinfo all the time - it's basically one-stop for everything in a glance. Some distros with later KDE's are even back-adding it optionally because all the newbies and mewbies use it so much (rather than di...

I've been getting way paranoid lately about the cybercrime world. I was even looking at "secure" linux distros. So here's my question: how is the *nix community protecting and policing itself? I'm pretty sure that upstream developers have a tacit method for preventing intrusion by cybercriminals (e....

There's something I just learned about called Tor I believe. I haven't tried it, but there are apparently linux distros specifically built for this sort of thing. They may not be the friendliest distros, tho... But since you specifically mentioned anonymous browsing...

Re: stability+speed for Opteron/NUMA?
Hi Pat: I've been booting between live distros - and right now I'm in Mint KDE live - it seems pretty stable and it's showing all processors. I'm running two instances of Prime95 - one with 19 CPU's and one with 9 for a total of 420GB memory usage. It's been running for an hour, so it seems pretty s...
