I currently have 6.5 kernel installed on LMDE6 using bookworm-backports.
I understand that this no longer receives security updates. Will it be upgraded to to 6.6 or do I have to get the LTS kernel some other way?

I can tell you that secure boot is off because I needed to do it to get the LMDE 6 Live environment to boot of the USB. The LDME 6 ISO should not require secure boot to be disabled to boot.
