Re: Cinnamon versus KDE

Used KDE on an off for years, really like it, but it always crashes - at least some part of it.

Still think it's cool, but I use the standard cinnamon with mint. Never had any issues with it. Just works.

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

I think what makes it easy to use is what makes it good. The ui on cinnamon is really easy and no settings are too hidden or in obscure places. Most people don't care how their car works, but they want a good looking car that does what they need. Mint makes using not windows easy and I've had people...

Used to work with clementine, then it was broken, not sure if fixed again.

Can't add .vhd from network drive to virtualbox 5.0.4

Hi Folks. In Linux (mint 18.3) You can't load a vhd through virtualbox (5.0.40 from the software centre). You can't add the .vhd file to virtualbox from a network location and you can't browse to a network location through virtualbox. You can try and add the .vhd file through virtualbox if you first...

Re: Appears MS is slowing dropping the bomb

I paid retail for W10 pro for my home pc. Only application I run it for is the Remote Desktop. Love W10 though. Hate the crap store mind. We support W7 now although I run W10 on my i7 admin pc. Hated hyper v though so back to virtual box. We had 8, but I hated it so we got 10. I wanted to drag the c...

I'm trying to get motivated to complete a project that you might want to try. I work as an It support Engineer at a school. I'm responsible for their Windows server 2012r2 system which includes DNS servers, terminal services, file server, cluster and print server to name a couple. My contract is end...

Re: What Windows software can you not do without?

Windows Remote Desktop.

Our WinSvr2012 servers won't accept connections from RDP on Linux connections so if I need to fix something from home or do some work at home I have to use my Win10 VM sitting on Mint. One of the security settings I think.

Re: IT professional, student or hobbyist?

IT Support for a school so naturally it runs Windows. Active Directory is fantastic. I keep a small windows partition on my laptop if I need to re-create or do a remote step by step guide of some windows thing, but I'm happy that 99% of my home computing time is using Linux Mint. It's taken 8 years ...

Re: Not sure what to think about Ubuntu?

Ubuntu went bad when unity came in. Gnome 3 I can just about accept. It's really good that unity is there for people who want it, but as far as helping Windows users migrate a first stop in Mint is safer. Last time I checked Ubuntu still did not have 'restricted' codecs or libdvdcss for reading stan...

Re: Linux: What to do with it?

I found it was better to put this on my parents computer as the windows 10 user interface was confusing to them and having to do virus scans and disk-defragments was a chore they never did or could not understand. They found the linux mint menu easier to use. The computer still does the same things ...

Re: Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

Whoever thought windows 8 / 8.1 on a desktop was acceptable was insane. Windows 10 is better. So use win 7 / 10 for gaming and any specialist non linux software. Use Linux. e.g. Mint for any home user doing most things. Use a mac if you life is so shallow you actually care what people think of your ...

Old Thread I know, but tried the following: Hi, I had the same issue with the brightness keys (different model but same brand) but the grub line did fix it for me, then after an update, the problem was back, but now I had to make this Xorg stuff and everything works fine, hope it helps! Create a new...

Re: Why so confusing?

The same could be said about any product. Why are there 100 different HD tvs that all look the same with different names? Why is there not simply one tin opener and why do some have different things on them. Finding a linux distro is like finding shoes. You just have to try a few before you find the...
