Can't make sense of backintime

I installed v1.1.12.2 of backintime on Linux 19.1 MATE. Everytime I start backtime, whether regular or root version, I'm told "Back in Time is not configured. Would you like to restore a previous configuration?" I respond NO and the Settings dialog opens. I understand the settings, but clicking OK d...

Re: [FIX] no swap on fresh LM19 install with home directory encryption

It all looks like smoke and mirrors to me. swapon --show NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO /dev/dm-0 partition 2G 0B -2 What's a dm-0? /etc/crypttab defines /swapfile as cryptswap1 /swapfile /dev/urandom swap,offset=1024,cipher=aes-xts-plain64 /dev/urandom is a random number generator. How can data be writte...

Calibre Get Books opens web browser, what to do next?

The Calibre "Get Books" function finds the Kindle book I want. But all it will do is open Firefox to the Amazon page where I can buy the book. The Amazon page confirms that I already own this book. I can switch back to Calibre, but I see no way to get Calibre to download the book. I can find nowhere...

Re: [RESOLVED] Recover files from encrypted data before Linux crashed

I have a similar situation.
But, when I use ecryptfs-recover-private, the resulting folder in /tmp/ contains just the .Private and .ecryptfs folders, everything still encrypted.
Should I then retry ecryptfs-recover-private on the recovered files?

Re: Timeshift questions

Thanks, Mattyboy. The video showed that the Snapshot Location is /timeshift on the selected partition. For backing up to an external drive, I'm happy to run the backup manually. If you want to externally back up more than one system, each one will need its own device or partition. I tried making an ...

Timeshift questions

Feel free to redirect me to a suitable FAQ or other doc if one exists. I need to know a few things before using Timeshift: Does Timeshift expect to have exclusive use of the Snapshot Location? The only location options are entire disk partitions, not folders. How is the backup data stored? What fold...

Re: Adding Chinese input support [solved]

Thanks for your efforts, but there is no solution in this thread. Your comments and the link to someone's comments from three years ago might help people, but they are not a clear set of steps to follow. It is really frustrating to follow multiple threads each with different sets of instructions tha...

Re: [Solved] I created a launcher in MenuLibre but can't see it there after saving.

So what did you do differently the second time, pepperminty? I can't get new menus and launchers to persist, even after a complete reboot. What is the secret? I also can't move launchers between menus. Can I suggest upgrading to Mint 18.2 XFCE first and see if that helps you? I am upgraded to Mint ...

MenuLibre doesn't work in LM 18.2 MATE

MenuLibre is disappointing: Cannot move existing menu items. Must create new launcher in new location, then hide old one. Categories tab is confusing, even for someone who has worked with freedesktop categories manually. Can create a new menu directory but it is not saved. After re-login, it will no...

Re: Monthly News - March 2017

The Update Manager changes sound interesting. More information could be useful, but we really shouldn't have to overthink routine updates. Clear statements such as "breaks X" or specific recommendations like "upgrade only if you need thing Y" would help users who are not developers and cannot be exp...

Re: Should clarify LM Blog description of LMDE 2 "Betsy"

jcoles: I think the confusion here is that Clem's Linux Mint Blog entry basically referred to software developed by the Mint team, such as the software listed by xenopeek. I'm still somewhat confused. Is there anything in the latest LMDE2 ISOs that is newer than in LM 18.1? Would it be correct to s...

Should clarify LM Blog description of LMDE 2 "Betsy"

Clem's Linux Mint Blog entry "New ISO images for LMDE 2 'Betsy'" of March 13, 2017 reads in part: When ready, newly developed features get directly into LMDE 2, whereas they are staged for inclusion on the next upcoming Linux Mint point release. Consequently, Linux Mint users only run new features w...

Re: How to disable black screen?

xset s off xset -dpms I use these two commands to turn off the xset screen saver and DPMS power saving, which are the problems. These changes don't hold thru a boot so I put them is a startup script. Re: Desktop effects not working Linux Mint 18 KDE

I may have the same issue. It's hard to tell. I'm in Settings on the Desktop Effects page. The cool-sounding effects listed there do not include information about how to invoke the effect. For each effect there's a red icon that in some cases starts an uninformative low-res video. (The other two ico...

Re: Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE released!

I never liked KDE much before, but this release is quite attractive. I'm going to give it an extended try. The UI is interestingly different from XFCE or MATE, if less consistent. Some examples: the Update Manager "widget" doesn't respond to a left-click, when all the others do. the Widget list (add...

kppp installation incomplete in LM18 KDE version

I tried to install kppp so that I could have a dialup connection if broadband failed. After installation of kppp (sudo apt-get install kppp), I pick kppp off the menu and get this error message: KDEInit could not launch 'kppp': Could not open library 'libkdeinit5_kppp'. Cannot load library libkdeini...

Re: mintupdate check won't take yes for an answer

Yes, Cosmo, I think I was confused. The "proceed?" question was not about upgrading, but about undoing the simulated upgrade. A check function should end with a clear statement of OK or a list of issues to be resolved. I saw neither. Eventually I just went ahead with the next steps and was successfu...

mintupgrade check won't take yes for an answer

I'm trying the process to update from 17.3 to 18. After 20 minutes or so, "mintupdate check" produces no warnings that I can see and asks "Do you want to continue?[Y/n]. I answer "y" and hit return. The terminal shows me that I said "N"! It then proclaims "Abort" and "Restoring your backed up APT so...

Re: Mint 18 assumes UTC timestamps on SD cards

The work-around is to run these commands as root:

Code: Select all

hwclock --systohc --utc
hwclock --hctosys --utc
This needs to be done in every session, so add the commands to /etc/rc.local.

Linux Mint 18 is not the only new distro with this issue.
