Re: Manjaro overtakes Mint in Distrowatch page-hit rankings

Since Mint 18 came out I have been having problems with one of my devices, an Intel NUC, with freezes, network dropouts and hardware incompatibilities. (Worked flawlessly with Mint 17). So I thought it was time to try another distro and gave Manjaro a try (because it was No.2 on the DistroWatch list...

Re: What does Gtk-WARNING mean in ~/.xsession-errors

Much of what you see in the xsession-errors file are small glitches and bugs being reported by the various applications and programs you run. In your example it's from the Network Manager Applet. (disregard the following if you already know this) Your Linux desktop uses the Gnome GTK gui system to r...

Re: <SOLVED> Setting up openvpn

FYI ... Generally the way to do this in Network Manager when you have an .ovpn file is to select 'Add' and in the drop down list select "Import a saved VPN configuration.." then select your ovpn file. This way you will have the option of connecting and disconnecting at will through the Network Manag...

Re: Can't stop VLC opening jpegs (new behaviour)

Easiest way is to right-click on any jpg file and select 'Properties' then 'Open With'.
From there you can manage the associations by adding or removing apps, and also set the default app.

@ wallaroo Assuming Dolphin is your file manager, try this .. Right-click on the file or directory you want to compress and select 'Compress' -> 'Compress To', select type as 'application/zip' and there you will see an encryption with password option. I tried your proposal as well, however in my ca...

Re: Annoyed with FF yet?

It's not all as bad as I thought it was going to be - the only thing I don't like so far is where the refresh thingy was moved to. I keep going for the enter reader view thingy :? Hint: You can move it back to almost its original position by clicking 'customize' and dragging the refresh button to t...

"File manager?" "File system?" "Root?" It's not a question at this point of forgetting... i'm ignorant. "NEWBIE FORUM!" Were you born knowing this stuff? I wasn't and I don't possess the knowledge to preform the acts you suggest. "sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf" with my password entered into the termin...

Re: I can't get on-line unless I'm using my VPN

Don't forget you need to edit it with root privileges. The easiest way to do this is on the command line. sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf (the password is the same as your user password) or if you want to use the GUI, use the file manager to go to 'File System' then right-click on directory 'etc' and sel...

Re: I can't get on-line unless I'm using my VPN

I agree with greerd, it looks like you have a static resolv.conf file which makes it easier to fix. As suggested the simplest fix is to edit '/etc/resolv.conf' file as root (when you are not connected to the VPN), and I would suggest you add the line 'nameserver 127.0.1.1' to the file and save it. Y...

Re: I can't get on-line unless I'm using my VPN

Well, oddly enough it's in directory '/etc/'. On the command line you can view the contents with the command 'cat /etc/resolv.cnf' or you can use your file manager to navigate to 'File System' and there you'll see directory '/etc/'. Open it and right-click on 'resolve.conf' and open with a text edit...

Re: Firefox does not have as many options in Options menu.

I think you'll find all the options are still there, previously they were spread over 13 menu groups and sub-groups, but now they are spread across only 4 menu groups (and no sub groups).
A lot less clicking to find the option you need.

Re: Cannot watch Netflix

Ever since Firefox announced that they now support Netflix I have been trying to get it to work - unsuccessfully. I do have Firefox screwed down fairly tightly with Firejail, NoScript, Adblocking and so on, so I was not surprised it didn't work right away. But I tried all the usual, like ensuring DR...

Re: I can't get on-line unless I'm using my VPN

It could be a DNS issue. I'll assume you are using PIA's connection application. When you connect to the VPN via the app, it replaces your system DNS settings with their own, and when you disconnect it restores to your default DNS settings. However if there are no default DNS settings to restore (or...

Re: test webserver .htaccess not working

You don't say which server you are using. I'll assume Apache2. In the /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file... Firstly you need to make sure you have an entry that says 'AccessFileName .htaccess' Secondly in the section '<Directory /var/www/>' replace 'AllowOverride None' with 'AllowOverride All'. Then res...

Re: Linux mint 18.1 on my Dell Precision 7520 does not detect wifi

It might be relevant to note that on the Dell web site for that model, if you select Ubuntu as the packaged operating system it states that Ubuntu does not support the default wifi card (Dell Wireless™ 1820 802.11AC Dual-Band Wireless + BT 4.1 Card (2x2)). It does however let you select an Intel wif...
