Re: How Can I Install Windows 7 Via Mint

But you can install Win7 or whatever inside your existing Linux Mint using VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org). I run XP that way.

Re: Linux and Multifunction printers

My Canon mg6150 works fine under Mint 17 with the 3.40 driver. I haven't look to see whether there's a more recent one. If it ain't broke .....

Re: ways to upgrade from Mint 16 to Mint 17

I don't see how to use method 3 from the live CD. There only seem to be options to install alongside 16 or overwrite or repartition. Can anyone guide me here please?

Re: Recommend me a backup program?

I use Back in Time for daily backups of home folders. But, being a (retired) professional developer, I do a weekly complete image backup with Clonezilla just in case.

Re: Password DESPERATION!

I agree with above. It seems your boyfriend created an Administrator account for his own use. You don't need it. As stated above you should be able to anything from your user account - if the OS needs root access to do some operation it will ask you for YOUR password and then assign root privileges ...

Every household has a gamer

Not this one!!

As for Windows being user friendly I'm continually called out to friends to fix their Windows laptops and desktops. And almost every time I visit my sister her brother-in-law (an IT professional) is struggling to recover their Windows desktop.

Re: What you use Linux for?

I use Linux for everything except for some Windows-based cross-compilers (Wine copes with those) so its quite transparent, and a Chinese MPU/PROM programmer which only has a Windows driver. It needs XP in a VirtualBox but that's no pain and restores when I need it almost instantaneously. As other po...

I always use Geany anyway. No point in a light version as far as I'm concerned.

I can never get the post release driver to install. It always aborts with an error message. It looks like your's hasn't installed either. Try activating the current one.

Re: R.I.P.....for real!

I would be inclined to just copy the files to a USB stick formatted to suit whatever other computer you have. Or, of course, if you have another computer running Linux you can unplug the hard drive, plug it in and mount it.

Or am I being stupid and missing something? (Nothing unusual!)

Re: Installation hangs during locales download.

The tedious downloading of locales happens with Ubuntu installs too. I seem to remember an earlier post which said you could avoid it by not being connected to the internet during installation. Maybe someone can confirm this? Worth a try anyway. Presumably you will then just have the english US defa...

You can add a Launcher from anything in the menu and then edit it to whatever you wish. There's probably a better way, but I haven't found it yet!

Re: Maya/Mate/64 bit - Cursor freezes, black screen

I've tried nomodeset - maybe it helps but the problem persists. However I have just Clonezillad my SSD system to a hard drive and have done 10 successive boots without any problem at all. It seems that the SSD (Samsung 830) speed is just too fast (which agrees with the small improvement I found when...

Re: Maya/Mate/64 bit - Cursor freezes, black screen

I too have similar boot problems with Maya.MATE 32-bit. Mainboard is Asus/AMD with integrated graphics. Using ACHI often boots to a black screen. With IDE it's better but get a black screen with frozen mouse cursor. Only reboot fixes. Otherwise when MATE is properly booted it's rock stable.

Re: My filesystems are larger than my partitions

Its the confusion between GB and GiB. From Wikpedia: 'The gigabyte ( /ˈɡɪɡəbaɪt/ gig-ə-byt or /ˈdʒɪɡəbaɪt/[1]) is a multiple of the unit byte for digital information storage. The prefix giga means 109 in the International System of Units (SI), therefore 1 gigabyte is 1000000000bytes. The unit symbol...

Re: When copying large files, system freezes

I just don't see this problem. I have just tried copying a 7GB file first to another hard drive and then to the same drive. About 2mins for the first and about 5mins for the second. The system remained perfectly responsive throughout and RAM usage hardly changed from 450MB out of my paltry 2GB insta...
