I have reached a resolution by using Mint 12. I was trying to use Mint 9 but when that failed I thought there was no point trying 12. But i got cover disc with Ubuntu 12.04 on it and that booted up in a Live session so I thought I would try Mint 12 and it worked. Thanks for your help Well, that's g...

That's interesting. Perhaps I should investigate Mint Debian. It begs the question: If Mint Debian is working for you, why do you want to use Mint flavoured Ubuntu?

You are correct. ACPI is the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface, an open standard for device configuration and power management by the operating system.
