The menubar of my mate-terminal is transparent. How to make it opaque?

I get a transparent menubar in Mate Terminal. After some testing, I found out that it is transparent only in Mint-X-variants but not in Mint-Y. I want to keep using Mint-X but I do not want the transparent menubar. Is there a way I can fix it? I don't mind editing theme files since I understand CSS,...

When will MATE 1.18 be included?

When will MATE 1.18 ship with a release of Mint? Will it be available on Sonia?

So the way to install it is to install the recommended packages individually. That's really strange. There should be at least one package that causes the conflict.

Re: Install WINE lose gnome-common and mate-common?

sudo apt-get --simulate --no-install-recommends install wine winetricks wine-gecko1.4 wine-gecko1.4:i386 So that at least works, though I haven't yet found which package is the culprit for removing the five... Thanks! That's a relief. If you can find the offending package, I hope Clem can do someth...

Re: Install WINE lose gnome-common and mate-common?

Can you test the recommended wine packages to see which one of them causes gettext to be removed?

Among the recommended packages, there are two which I can't live without: wine-gecko and winetricks.

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

with some tweaking Gnome shell is really nice and usable The problem is not that the Gnome devs have not yet incorporated these features, the problem is that the devs actually believe they shouldn't be there. Thus Shell is premised on a flawed design. I think egrabrum's mention of 10 minutes is sig...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Cinnamon is perhaps nowhere as close to perfection but is not a bad design at all. I've voted Cinnamon. True. "Let it mature" is applicable to Cinnamon and Mate. These desktops are good in design but buggy. In contrast, Unity is very stable in 12.04. Its bugs have been fixed. But its flawed design ...

Another example of this is Unity. Unity has matured since it first appeared. Its bugs have been fixed. It is now close to perfection of a bad design.

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Let me explain some of the reasons why, in my opinion, Gnome Shell is a step backwards in efficiency, usability and ergonomics: Nice summary. An idea crossed my mind. Perhaps if we can come up with similar criticisms of Cinnamon and Mate, then it would help the Mint team make it better. The big dif...

Try linux mint. It is available from www.linuxmint.com and it is better than either of the systems you mentioned.

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Good Points bamm... No, I wouldn't really recommend a default install of Gnome3/Gnome-Shell to a new user ( I definitely agree with you there).. I also agree that out of the box, it definitely needs some help to be really usable and Gnome DID make some bad decisions. I myself don't mind having to d...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

SolusOS is still in Squeeze but when they migrate to Wheezy Ikey has said that it will have a heavily modified Gnome3. I don't think you're right here. I know the SolusOS devs like Mate but they haven't yet made a final decision on the desktop. SolusOS uses Gnome2 not Mate. It is based on Debian St...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

LOL - I knew something like that would be coming from the other camp. :-) Is that not what the extensions are for (so anyone can adjust it to their liking)? The purpose of extensions are to extend. As you said, it is for anyone to adjust it to their liking. But something is wrong if there exists an...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Now, After using it, configuring and adding 15-20 extensions, I find myself in the opposite camp. Interesting that you needed to add 15-20 extensions to bring Gnome Shell to a state that you can love. Anyway, to each his own. I am glad you find Gnome Shell useful. Personally, out of the box I would...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

I think Cinnamon has a lot of rough edges. Why two control centers, with the same icon at that? Can't they be merged? Why does the menu grow with too many favorites? Can't we just port mint-menu to Cinnamon? Why does minimize animation look like it's being closed? And why do theme changes only affec...

Re: Poll: Desktop environments

Well...I was using LMDE when it started with gnome 2, then everyone decided to split or fork gnome 2, which really didn't need to be done. I personally think gnome 2 should have been given more time to work with, but everyone seems to want what's bright shinny fancy and look more like windows....I ...
