Re: Speccing a new Machine

I too just built a new PC for this winter. I didnt need the power from all the parts below but its nice to rip DVD and Bluray discs quickly and have enough power to game. The entire build was about 1100. The case I got below was perfect. Fits next to my subwoofer in my family room. I had a mid-towe...

Speccing a non-gaming Linux computer

I use Windows for gaming and there's no reason for me to change that as I will always have a windows computer as well. (Not a place to argue that) Will be used for internet, photo editing, video editing, and the usual libre office type doohickeys. Essentially anything that doesn't involve high-spec ...

Angela Merkel arrives at Passport Control at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

Nationality?" asks the immigration officer.

"German," she replies.

"Occupation?

"No, just planning on staying for a few days".

Re: Thankless Job of Moderator

I was a moderator on a Land Rover forum for MANY years. It was (still is) a huge forum and the number of mods increased as the forum grew. Most users were reasonable but there were always the 1% which take up 99% of the time to sort out. I am admin/mod/owner of a motorcycle forum. It's relatively sp...

Retro text advetures and similar - how to?

I love the old text adventures like leather goddesses of phobos, and numerous others of a similar natures. Also some basic games which are essentially a text adventure/choose your own adventure format with pictures. I've found a site called myabandonware.com which appears to be a legit source for th...

Re: Mint 19 Does not Shut Down

I've been experiencing a shutdown problem too, albeit slightly different. Also LM19. i7 using onboard graphics ( no separate GPU). If I choose power off it does.. then reboots and starts up again. So a power off does exactly the same as a restart. Hard shutdown with power switch required. Any ideas?

Re: Vlad's Linux Diary, and G'day !

Realised I haven't updated this for a while. I've not had much time to devote to this - way too much else to do. That aside I've found people on the forum very willing to assist as I've gone along, which I'm thankful for. I've recently updated to 11.1 U5 which has proven to be stable and not problem...

Cool, this thread is exactly what I'd hoped it would be. Maybe the developers of Mint might get some inspiration from some of these comments over time, :)

Re: ** I just heard about this new technology called a "server".

FYI Another term you may hear is NAS - which is Network Attached Storage. Basically allows someone to put all their stuff on hard drives, with redundancy in case of drive failure as well as share that data (eg movies, music etc) to other devices on the network. (sharing the data is simply 'serving' ...

Re: Best choice for a used/refurbed Linux friendly laptop?

I'd recommend Lenovo thinkpad.

I had a Toshiba and it was OK but ultimately problematic in several areas.

The thinkpad I have now is just great.

Just in case someone has a really narrow screen I suppose we should type like this ? Just type normally with proper paragraphs and it will be fine. Oh and if you want to write in ENGLISH then spell in English. Colour is correct. Aluminium is correct. Sulphur is correct. Technically what you are look...

Re: Cyberfox I love it a nice browser to use

I have traditionally used Chrome but Google has been irking me more and more of late so I decided to install FF on my windows computer, as it was already on my 'new' Mint 19 system. So far so good and I think I'll probably switch permanently. I absolutely need a cross-platform browser as I run Windo...

Screenshot_20180728_133941.pngBoys, BOYS! Linux does have beautiful eye candy. It's called KDE. And it is most configurable with thousands of different theme combinations. Unfortunately Mint has decided to drop it. Big mistake since it's the best thing Mint has going for it. (mho) I was wondering i...

Re: Replacing thermal paste - a quick guide in 4 steps

Well I won't fling bovine excrement at you, but I do think that's taking things a bit OTT. But if that's what you want to do, go your hardest. I'd suggest to people in general though, that level of precision isn't actually required. :) The reason thermal paste exists is precisely to fill small surfa...

What sends noobs running back to Windows?

We've discussed elsewhere the impediments to getting people to try Linux. There are three types of computer users: 1. Those who will never try Linux (for reasons in the 'what stops Linux becoming more mainstream' thread) 2 . Those who try Linux and run away back to the 'safety' of Windows (or Mac) 3...
