If your using cinnamon I think there’s a few desktop widgets which you can get to show some of those things

If you know your way around the xscreensaver config file you can edit it directly. It's a hidden file in your home folder - ~/.xscreensaver If not then apt install xscreensaver , then run xscreensaver-demo . Yeah it was the mint meta codecs; restarting my system didn't have the same effect as switching it off and on again, because this morning after turning it back on all is ok. Weirdness
