Re: "Could not download all respository indexes"

sudo dpkg --remove-architecture 1386
I dont know what the reason for this cmd is but it looks to me like 1386 (one-386) is a typo. I would expect it to be i386 (eye-386).

Logging IP Addresses

Does Linux keep a log of which IP addresses were connected to / or received from ?
Where would this log be kept, and which tool (journalctl?) would I use to view the log if there is one?

Thanks,

Re: Minimal BASH-like grub issue

It sounds like the UEFI bios has decided that it wants the USB stick in as its primary boot device. Can you get into the UEFI menu at power on (DEL key, or similar depending on the cpu model) and reset the default boot device to /dev/sda? On my UEFI systems, the UEFI is smart enough to detect when a...

Re: Swappiness file seems to have moved?? .... Solved ...

Changing the value in the sysctl.conf file will take effect on the next boot. So in that sense the change is permanent, If you just want to change the current value you can (as sudo) write the value to the file /proc/sys/vm/swappiness (This is not really a file on disk, the /proc/sys "directory" is ...

How To Use Nemo Extensions

In another thread here there is reference to calculating Checksums on files by right clicking. I cant figure out how to do this. Going to the Plugins menu in Nemo (3.8.6) I can see an SHA256 plugin along with several other ones, they are all active but none of them show up when I right click a file....

Re: [SOLVED] Sorting USB / SD card for mp3 player

I have not tried fatsort, will have to give that a go. However there is another approach Does your mp3 player handle playlists? If that is the case you can create a .m3u file with the names of the tracks in the order you want them. you can just do a ls >myplaylist.m3u and have the files in alphabeti...

Samba Protocol Changes for servers

There have been several excellent posts by among others, altair4, on the subject of samba. Here is what I have discovered through some testing of various options. I am assuming that where possible you would want to use the latest of whatever if you can. Note this post is about setting up a SERVER. I...

Re: Any disadvantage reverting back to Legacy BIOS?

How old is your MoBo? I have heard that new Mobos come with UEFI; the "Legacy Bios" option is a bit of a hack and may not work all that well especially with new hardware. it used to be that BIOS was more reliable than UEFI, but now that UEFI is well established the reverse may be true, especially if...

NVIDIA Driver 390 API mismatch Mint 19 Tara

I was running NVIDIA driver 340, and I just tried NVIDIA 390 as the driver manager recommends. But the Xorg server still shows using 340, and the dmesg command shows many many instances if this error message: [ 1416.623505] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 390.77, but NVRM: this kernel...

Re: Installation Failed with "'Grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/"

Failing to install GRUB is a known bug with the MINT19 ISO version 1. Version 2 is supposed to fix this. Are you using version 2 of the ISO? The workaround (if you don't want to download a new ISO) seems to be to install without an internet connection active. i.e unplug the cable, (or don't sign on ...

Re: Transferring files from Windows to Linux MInt

I assume that your laptop is capable of booting either windows or Linux? So you have a Windows C drive and a Linux "root partition" (also known as /). You want to get files from your C drive to say /home/myuser? To Transfer files from Windows to Linux, you have two options: A) (via USB stick) Under w...

Re: Cups cant print test page in Tara Mint19 --SOLVED

Hi XENOPEEK. Ok. That works. The page prints (at least on my B/W printer and I don't have a color printer I can try). Page only contains the circles (and the words "Printer Test page" at the top; does not contain any logo, or any text about which printer etc. as the Ubuntu one does, but at least it ...

Re: Bug Reporting to the Mint Team? HOW TO?

Well, I did raise it in the forum, and it was commented on (and confirmed) by at least two other people, and we did come up with a fix. All of that however does not fix the original Mint Disrtro, which is the objective of filing the bug report. The OP in this thread was about how to contact the Mint...

Bug Reporting to the Mint Team? HOW TO?

The Mint Troubleshooting guide https://linuxmint-troubleshooting-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/where.html says that to report MInt bugs as opposed to Ubuntu bugs one should go to: https://github.com/linuxmint/linuxmint There if you want to report a bug, you can create a GITHUB account and login. Re: [SOLVED] Partioning advice dualboot LM18.3 and 19

GPT vs MSDOS disks. For a Linux only machine I heartily recommend a GPT disk; Linux and GRUB have no issues with GPT. you can treat them the same as MBR/msdos disks, only you are not limited to 4 primary partitions. you can have I think 128. (Windows will not let you use GPT disks without UEFI boot;...

Re: Linux Mint and Windows 10 Dual Boot \ Separate Drives

If you are using Windows 10, I think that means that you MUST be using UEFI. ( I am not current with the latest Windows shenanigans.) If you are using UEFI then you have an ESP (System partition in Windows parlance) that typically has the name EFI. If you look in gparted you will see that it is a FA...

I think that even if I can modify themes and so on it is not going to do what I want.XED seems to be a programmers editor, and the color schemes etc. seem to be target-ed at highlighting syntax for some language or other. Colors in XED -- Menu item not there

When creating files with XED it would be very nice to be able to specify that certain words be in a certain color or font. The XED help says this: Font & Colors Preferences Font Select the Use default theme font option to use the default system font for the text in the xed text window. The Editor fo...
