Re: Why oh Why can't we make Linux better looking

Regarding the title of this thread, I'm glad my wife didn't say that about me!! For 18 years I've worked for her like a solid Linux distro, and she's never distro-hopped, so looks aren't everything if all you need is a reliable workhorse. I just wish I could run some kernel updates on myself (withou...

[SOLVED] XFCE4 Desktop disappeared

FYI for anyone who might be searching for an answer like I was. On Mint 18.2 32-bit XFCE on a intel quad 2, was downloading a large udemy.com class when my pc froze up completely (still don't know why). On reboot, my desktop icons, background, and right-click-on-desktop were all gone, just a black s...

Re: Best Youtube (and others) videos about Linux

Joe Collins, yeah! I've really enjoyed and gotten some great tips from his vids. My favorite linux youtuber is Sneekylinux. Who else comes up with titles like "Puppy Linux 7.5..So Good I Wet My Pants." :D His brogue can be hard to understand if you're not used to down-home Brit English, but his vids...

Try editing the Thunar Create simlink custom action command Edit->Configure custom actions... replace the existing command with this ln -s %f "%n (symlink)"
OK. That worked for me. Thanks, Chris! Why isn't it set up that way to begin with?

[SOLVED] Thunar won't make symlinks of folders with spaces in name

I though I'd post this strange little glitch for anyone who might be new to Linux and struggling with this. Using 18.2 32-bit, xfce, in thunar file manager /home I tried to make symlinks of a few folders that have two-word names with a space between words, but it would not create them. So I renamed ...

Re: DEs/Desktop Environments and comparisons to older Windows?

This I agree with emphatically. Sure, some computer users are smart and can start off with someting like Gentoo or Fedora, but those in my life circle think I'm computer savvy (not enough, that's for sure) and I really needed and benefitted massively from your guys and your help here. The nice thin...

[SOLVED] XFCE4 Pulseaudio crashed badly....volume indicator disappeared

Posting this for anyone looking here with the same problem, maybe this'll help. (Running 18.2-xfce on an older athlon 3x, 2gb ram, w/built-in Realtek HQ sound.) For whatever reason that I don't know, perhaps after trying to open smplayer, I suddenly lost pulseaduio completely. Rebooting didn't help....

Re: Is distro hopping ultimately pointless?

Distro hopping was A LOT(!) of fun for several years. But then real life kicked in. From my adventures I had come to realize that one could actually use Linux for serious work. Then I found that I needed the dreaded Killer of Distro Hopping---rock-solid stability. So my final destination became Mint...

Wow! I knew YT was discouraging viewers from watching what they feel are politically incorrect videos. However, since when is it politically incorrect to tell the truth about microstuck's mind-control of the unwashed computer-using masses?

Re: Sonya isn't as good as Maya

What system are you running it on? Perhaps time to upgrade hardware? Mint runs okay on older equipment but as conservative as mint is, it still has to keep up with modern usage. Even the Linux kernel had to eventually drop support for 386-processors after 21 years!

Re: Tea - questing for a good cup

I'm somewhat a connoisseur of fine black tea. For many years my absolute favorite has been PG Tips (bagged or loose) with a little turbinado sugar and 2 drops of whole milk. Ultra-smooth and classy! When I lived in Houston about 10 years ago, I'd buy it at Kroger. For regular black, just about anyth...

Re: Switching From Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa To Windows 8...

That's one of the things that drove me away from Microsoff:---always having to worry about licensing limitations, whether something was legal or not, whether I had permission to install this or that, etc. Enter Linux, and all those questions disappeared. Sure it was a challenge, and sometimes a diff...

Re: Sounds ominous for HP printer owners . . . . . . .

About 6 years ago I started buying up all the old hp printers I could find at local thrift-stores, back when they were plentiful, for about $4 or $5 each. I had moved over exclusively to linux, so used the hplip (sometimes hpijs) drivers. Well, jump to present, and I'm still using old HP printers, w...

Hi, immentor! Welcome!
And a big second to what The-Wizard said.
Linux isn't windoes or mack, so take your time to learn it properly, and you'll be glad.
And as you said you're moving away from WinOS, keep moving and moving gradually until you can't even see it on the horizon!

Re: Hallo from Sweden!!

Hallo, Jan! It was the same with me. When I was first leaning Linux, I always had winxp as my regular system. Then gradually as I got more comfortable with Linux I began to drop windows, until now I no longer us it at all.
