Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

Well, if you cannot add it from within the UEFI (what a terrible UEFI, is that Insyde?) then you've got to do it from Linux via efibootmgr that you already found. sudo efibootmgr --create --label "GRUB2" --loader "\EFI\UBUNTU\SHIMX64.EFI" -d /dev/sdX -p Y Replace sd X with the designation of the de...

Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

You are confusing what's on disk and what's stored in the UEFI. My command only adds to what's stored in the UEFI, it doesn't affect any of your files. Super. Thanks for the clarifications! It is very much appreciated. My UEFI doesn't allow me to add an entry, but it DOES allow me to 'Delete' one. ...

Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

It's simple though. Your bad UEFI is only auto-detecting the Windows boot loader while ignoring other boot loaders in the ESP. I'm going to repeat back what it is I think I've understood: So the UUID for the boot, efi sda1 partition "IS" being stored in the computers UEFI somewhere. (It's the only w...

Thanks!
I was looking at the other end of the list and didn't see the "Beta" button.

Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

. . . but you can manually select/add the boot device from the UEFI's boot menu. Yeah, I don't have an option to "Add" that as a boot device. I can change the order of things, but not "Add" another one. Or you do the same as you did with your Win10 partition and clone the UUID so your Linux root pa...

Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

Further to my last post . . . then why does the Win10 entry have it correct?

the Grub entry gets skipped completely, and then just goes to the Windows boot loader.

I know I'm missing something here, but I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: UUID read from??? sudo efibootmgr --verbose

Thanks for the reply gm10

I was worried that it was going to be a bit wordy . . . I thought I'd try being thorough first so as to not appear that I was trying to be spoon fed :) .

If I understand what you've written, the UUID of the Boot Device is saved in the UEFI the laptop itself (not the SSD)?

HP envy x360 convertible - Onboard MIC not detected

I have a newer laptop that Mint 19.2 is not detecting the microphone (nothing appears in the hardware section). I've tried a couple of 'suggestion's (like installing pavucontrol) but to no avail. here is what inxi -Fxz and aplay -l show: inxi -Fxz Drives: Local Storage: total: 953.87 GiB used: 37.28...

Re: Recommended Kernel MATE18.2

It depend on the CPU generation you're running.: Kabxlake: 4.10 skylake: 4.8 anything older: 4.4 AMD CPUs: use 4.10 Kerne 4.4 is to old to support *lake processors right 4.8 is too old to support kabylake fully even as it supports skylake. Anyways you may use the most current kernel in update manag...

[SOLVED] How do I check if the 'Beta' version of 18.2 is installed v.s. the 'non-Beta'

Pretty much as the Subject says:

How do I check if the final release of 18.2 (the non-Beta version) has been installed/upgraded v.s. the 'Beta' release of 18.2?

Thanks.

Re: Recommended Kernel MATE18.2

I can't find the article at the moment, but I thought that running anything before kernel version 4.5.x was not safe anymore.
I don't remember what the vulnerability was anymore.

If I am wrong, maybe someone here could clarify . . . but that was my understanding.

Re: Mint 13 Can see My NAS - Mint 18.1 Can Not

In your screen shot, the top-left (above the Add a Firewall Rule) there is Profile(Home), Status(ON). Just below that there is Incoming(Deny) and Outgoing(Allow), setting Incoming(Allow) should allow everything in/out with the FW on. Then you can create a rule from the Report tab. I tried that, and...

Re: Mint 13 Can see My NAS - Mint 18.1 Can Not

I don't know if this is helpful, but the message I am getting with the firewall on (with and without the rules added) is:
Unable to mount location
Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory
. . . but it works with the Firewall off

Re: Mint 13 Can see My NAS - Mint 18.1 Can Not

He is not disabling his firewall so others can access his shares. He has to disable his firewall so that he can access someone else's shares - but only one of the devices ( DLink ) not the other (FreeNAS). Almost as if he has a "deny out" to a select set of ip addresses and the DLink is included. T...
