Re: Video creation software options
Hey everyone, I just wanted to thank you all for your suggestions. We ended up going with Shotcut and really enjoyed using the program. I found a couple nice tutorials on Youtube that were very helpful. My son is very happy and excited about how the project turned out because of it. Thanks again!!!

Video creation software options
Hi everyone, I am going to be helping my son with a school project and we are going to make a video and do some layover with additonal audio and maybe even some graphics on top of the recording. Think of it like what some folks put up on youtube I guess. I am not looking for anything groundbreaking ...

Re: Who really checks open source?
I check the source quite often, especially small scripts to verify there isn't any malware. What exactly are you looking for to determine whether malware is present or not? URLs, sockets use, ip addresses etc - anything that communicates with the internet. But I only check small scripts Interesting...

Re: Pi 400
I have a Pi4 (8gig) currently hooked up to my tv via hdmi and use it with a cheap wireless keyboard with a trackpad. I feel like this is the way to go, given that I can move to any place in the room to use the Pi. This new keyboard version, with the cables connected to your monitor, keep you confine...

Re: LM 20.0 an utter disaster on less than latest hardware.
Long-time Mint user, but 20.0 can be an utter disaster on less than latest hardware. Read the warnings about nV cards, etc. This one refuses to install on some SoC nV-based systems, SiS Mirage and other oddball video systems. It doesn't like some older 1024x!!! monitors, even some older SATA I hard...

Re: Kernel 5.8.0 appeared today
This was a very informative thread. I appreciate everyone's responses. I've been using Mint and/or some form of Linux for about 8 years now and am just finally realizing this little bit of very important information!

Re: Kernel 5.8.0 appeared today
This is very interesting and not something I was familiar with. Take a look at the screen shot that I have provided. This is from my computer. Does this mean I've gone from version 4 to 5 at some point?

Re: Kernel 5.8.0 appeared today
Are some of you folks basically saying that when you install whatever version of Mint on your computer, you run with the kernal version it comes with, ignoring all future kernal updates in the system manager update? I always update because I was under the impression there could be security issues th...

Re: American College is a Waste of Money
Here in the US, attending a graduate university or even a small community tech college is really turning into a waste of money. Unless you have scholarships or any aid, you'll owe more in debt than you'll ever make back. I'm very frustrated with our educational system right now. I'm an honors stude...

Re: Hang on restart/shutdown and screen freeze
I went to shutdown the laptop today and it got stuck on the Mint logo again. This is after I followed the link above by changing to the Intel drivers.

Re: Choosing Raspberry Pi as an efficient way to replace ageing laptop? Is Pi really Linux-friendly?
I'd buy a second hand thinkpad, last one I bought, a T430, cost me less than £100 off ebay, UK seller. Replaced HDD with SSD, installed mint and good to go. You can run raspbian and ubuntu on a pi, but that's about it. It's an ARM device. +1 I am a huge refurbished lenovo thinktank fan - I have two...

Re: Choosing Raspberry Pi as an efficient way to replace ageing laptop? Is Pi really Linux-friendly?
If you are going to keep things pretty basic with your computer use, then yes, the Pi can be a nice replacement to your laptop. I own a Pi3 and my kids use it for things like Minetest/Minecraft, kids coding web sites, and YT videos. It comes with word processing software, which we don't use but I im...

Hang on restart/shutdown and screen freeze
When the restart or shutdown hangs, I have no other choice but to shut it down with the power button. This doesn't happen with every restart. It is random when it happens. When the system froze, I couldn't even use the mouse. The entire system was locked up. At first I thought that the mouse was dea...
