Thank you for your reply, I just want to install it as easy as possible. Software Manager only installs .deb files. Java only comes in a .tar file. I locate the readme install instructions and they lead me into this mess. I'm not trying to do anything but install Java. I can't for the life of me see...

How do I change permissions on a file that I do not own, or can I? For instance, I edit the "hosts" file in the etc directory on occasion and I can open it as administrator and edit it but I'd like to change the permissions so I can edit it easier.

software manager

After install an application from software manager I can't find it anywhere. Software says it is installed and the uninstall button shows beside the program in software manager but the program is no where to be found.

URL field in firefox disappeared

Does anyone know why my url field has disappeared from fire fox. I can't enter web addresses now and I tried reinstalling it and the new install does the same thing. Is there a setting for this or something? Thanks.
