Re: Popping noise when start up and shutting down

I get this with Mint 18.3 and 19 when closing down. This is on an Intel NUC. It seems to me to be something to do with the sound driver.

Re: USB-install LM18.3 KDE - one fast, one slow

I suggest to start again with the 'USB 3.0/64GB'. Use gparted to delete all the partitions and then install Mint again
Make sure you are working on the correct drive when you do this type of work. You don't want to delete partitions on the wrong drive!

Re: No access to the CD/DVD Drive

Sounds to me that the DVD drive is not well. You could try using a cleaning disk. I use ' USB image writer ' which is installed on Mint 18.3 for writing 'ISOs' to USB sticks. I suggest you try that first, it's much faster than a DVD. If you have USB3 stick and port you can install Mint on an SSD in ...

Re: Mounting a USB drive

I have tried this on USB2 and 3 ports. I have used SD Cards, and different USB drives and once the item has been 'Ejected' it can be seen with 'lsblk' but attempts to mount the drive are always mount: special device sdd2 does not exist

Re: Mounting a USB drive

Thanks for the replies but I respectfully refer to my original question.
I can insert a USB thumb drive and Nemo opens up and all is well. I can 'Eject' the drive and it is no longer showing. So far so good.

I would like to remount the drive from the command line but I can't find a way to do it.

Re: Mounting a USB drive

Hi Flemur and thanks for the reply. I had a look at the page you pointed to but I don't understand it.

I have just done a test on Manjaro and I get exactly the same results. This seems to be a Linux 'thing'. Perhaps I am trying to 'mount' the drive the wrong way.

Mint 18.3

I have updated 2 computers with Mint 18.3 and both have the same issue with the Update Manager. Both computers are showing that there are updates but there are none to process. I notice the ToolTip on the Update Icon shows '1 update available'. My other computer shows 4 updates and when I look there...

Re: Can't view .jpg file from Samsung phone....

I have just tried this with my Samsung 4 phone and it worked OK with photos. I tried to run a video and it did't work. I copied the video to the computer's hard dive and it ran OK. Try copying the picture(s) to your hard drive and see if that helps. I have Dropbox installed on both the phone and the...

Re: copy text on highlight and paste with middle button

I haven't got a mouse with me to try but you can copy from a Terminal any highlighted text with [Ctrl]+[Shift]+C or Right Click the mouse and select 'Copy'.

Re: Read Only USB

I have not tried this but if you: -

Format the USB with EXT3 or 4 (Gparted can do this)
Add the files to the USB
Change the 'Owner' of all the files to 'root'
Change the file 'Permissions' to 'Read only'

That may prevent them from deleting the files, might be worth a try.

Re: Installing Linux MInt 18.0 on an SDD

I've not tried this on your Dell model but I have installed Mint on SSDs without any need to make BIOS changes. It might be an idea to see if there is an update for your Dell BIOS. You did not have to purchase a DVD to get Mint, it is available for free from here https://www.linuxmint.com/download.p...

There is something going on with Chromium. It's not just Flash but now some sites are now coming up with security warnings. It might be best to wait for all this to be sorted.

I'm not sure what the problem is but try installing Shutter, it is the best for screen shots.

Re: Mac building Linux on Windows Hard drives

You say "I've then been using UNetBootin to create a bootable Linux mint USB drive". If this works then just boot up the computer from the USB and click install. Mint will sort out the hard drive for you, just select the "Use the whole drive for Mint" option when asked.
