Are you using network-manager? If so, delete all wireless profiles and then create a new one.
You can also try wicd, another popular wireless manager.

Please run in terminal and post the output.

As to the shutdown problem, you can save your documents, exit all programs and then run sudo halt in terminal to see if it shutdowns correctly. As to the wifi. Where did you get the drivers: use "Additional drivers" or download from somewhere else. Because I'm not familiar with Boardcom ch...

Thanks for the info, I will try that because my n10 USB adaptor overheated and is now dead. I am just frustrated that the kernel is not built to handle the Realtek hardware right away. Can you still boot into Mint?
If can, run

sudo update-grub

in terminal and see if it detects your windows.
If you are using the main edition of Mint 12, you can change screen resolution in "system settings->display"

This also happens on my flash disk some times.
You can let windows check your disk and see if it happens again.

It seems the signal is rather weak. I assume that is why your connection is slow.

The arrangement of your partitions makes nearly no effect on the performance.
A SSD is a perfect solution to slow booting.

Can you log into your router?
I had the same issue sometimes. I could access my local network, but couldn't access the public network.
After emailing the router's manufacture, it told me to disable 11n and use 11g mode instead.
The situation hasn't happened so far.
