Goodbye and thanks
Dear forum members, I'm going to leave this forum, because I'm moving away from my faithful LMDE2 (well, not quite, because I'm going for SolydX, which after all was derived from LMDE). Upgrading my old system, which was installed with the 2011 XFCE iso, would be too much of a hassle. Now I would li...

Sort directories before files: solved
Well, I don't want to revive a 2-year-old post , but I eventually came up with a solution to this one! The trick (from an XFCE forums thread) is to start dconf-editor, navigate to org > gtk > settings > file-chooser > sort-directories-first and select "true". (I guess it can be done with a...

Re: soooo ... why Flash?
[...]Why use a surveillance system that streams with Flash? [...] That's because Arlo is the one and only system that I know of, which features 100% wireless waterproof cameras which run for 6+ months on batteries only. Let me elaborate a little, provided you don't laugh at us. Granted, we probably...

Re: What's the correct Flash plugin for Firefox?
Thanks to both for the replies, [...]Flash in Firefox WFM (per this test site )[...] For me too, though it complains that Flash is slightly outdated ("Your version28.0.0.126 Latest Version28.0.0.137"). But unfortunately, I still get the same error (described in my post #1). [...]I prefer u...

Re: Not so trouble-free upgrade
Thanks, prestonR and Cosmo, for the replies. It appears that one of the repositories (probably "extra") was preventing the update. After resetting to default, I was able to update the system. Even better, after all the updates I could upgrade to Linux Mint 18.3. Everything went well, so I ...

[solved] Not so trouble-free upgrade
Hello, A while back I upgraded my daughter's PC from LM 17.3 to 18.1. Everything seemed to work OK after the upgrade so for some time I left this PC untouched. But last week, I tried to upgrade to LM 18.3. There was no "Edit-Upgrade to..." option in menu. Instead I saw that the update mana...

> Partage... > Partages Windows : "accès authentifié" décoché ?) Maintenant, que d...

What's the correct Flash plugin for Firefox?
Hello, We've just set up a Netgear Arlo surveillance system. It has revealed what looks like a Flash issue: In Chromium (flashplugin 28.0.0.126), we are able to watch the video feeds. But we much prefer Firefox... In Firefox, we get a ":connection failed" error. Many Netgear Arlo users rep...

Re: Bluetooth unreliable
Hi lotech, I too have BT issues on 2 different laptops. I don't know any magic solution, but I have noticed that 1) the blueman-applet manager seems to work better than others (at least with my hardware); 2) it does help, once connected, to open it from the tray, e.g. by displaying the list of conne...

Re: Bluetooth + BrennanB2
Hi mhwelsh, I too have a B2. AFAIK, Bluetooth on the B2 is only for audio input/output. But the B2 does have a NAS function, which you have to enable: http://www.brennan.co.uk/itemcontent.php/content/Sonos Then you can transfer any files you wish to (or from) your B2, once you connect it to your LAN...

Re: Update Manager blacklist bug? Cinnamon 3.7
I've read the above thread and I think I gave a wrong advice. (I thought that locking in Synaptic and with apt-mark was the same.)
So, if the OP doesn't want to make use of this trick, then it would probably be better for him to use apt-mark.

Re: Update Manager blacklist bug? Cinnamon 3.7
PMFJI but I was about to post when I came across this thread. I can confirm that it also happens in XFCE, so it's not desktop-specific. What about "locking the version" (either in Synaptic or with command line)? I bet the package would still appear in the list of updates, but since it's lo...

Re: Printer driver needs old library
You can check older versions here: http://snapshot.debian.org/binary/libtiff4/ Useful link, I'm bookmarking it! Well after some trial and error the solution was called libtiff4 3.9.7-2 . Slightly more recent version, and not older as I wrote. With this library installed, I was able go through the w...

Re: Printer driver needs old library
Damn, I spoke too fast. libjpeg8 is already installed, and has a lot of pre-dependencies. It seems unreasonable to suppress it. I could force a downgrade with dpkg, but I bet the result wouldn't be very pretty. OTTH, I saw another user somewhere else who claimed to have solved the problem by install...

Re: Printer driver needs old library
Thank you Monsta! You can get the package from Wheezy: https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libtiff4 Yes, I had noticed this old package but... It will require one more old lib: https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libjpeg8 ... only one , this is perfectly fine! I had given up, wrongly assuming that lib...

[SOLVED] Printer driver needs old library
Hello, I had to reinstall an OS (LMDE2, fresh install, latest ISO) on my daughter's laptop. We have a problem when it comes to set up her "old" Canon MFP495 printer. Canon provides a Linux driver as a .deb package, but it depends on libtiff4... LMDE2 has libtiff5 now! So that stubborn driv...
