Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

I upgraded to 5.3.0-59 and don't seem to have any problems. Since I use grub-customizer, I found I had to manually select this kernel as the one to boot. Wondering how best we can help figure out why jmorris84 is getting difficulties. I'm willing to run diagnostics for comparison, and can use grub-c...

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

Are you able to install and run grub-customizer? That might let you choose
a default kernel that will allow the deletion etc.

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

I've set 51 as default, but kept both 53 and the workaround images as part of the menu
set up with grub-customizer. That way if developers need me to test things, I can
boot and run them.

Clearly, I agree that 51 should be the choice for now.

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

It may be helpful to click the "Does this bug affect you?" link at the top of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1879185 You may need an Ubuntu1 account to do that, which is a minor P.I.T.A., but I think that it will give some extra impetus to get a proper fix. It seems that there ...

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

windyweather: The behaviour you see is what I experienced, and as mentioned earlier, I used grub-customizer (which is in the 19.3 repos I use) to move "51" version to be default. Also the debian packages linked by Kai-Heng Feng worked for me to get a bootable/stoppable linux. For now, avoid the "53"...

I installed them and this instance seems to shut down correctly. I'm waiting to see if the orignator of the suggested image/modules wants some info from my mach...

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

I think it's going to be 5.3.0-51 (I used grub-customizer to set it as default boot) until this is fixed.
Though we should hope it's not just something that "works", but a fix for which the reason is understood,

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

FWIW I put a link back to this thread in the launchpad bug thread, since my machine info is here, along with comments by others. I've had a few lock-ups over the last month or so at random times and situations. Maybe related. Let's hope the main issue resolved quickly. If there's urgent need for som...

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

I'll check in the morning to see if there's other advice, as I've reset to boot in "51" for now. I've some other stuff that has risen up the priority ladder. I'll see if by then my old ubuntu1 identity is available also. And maybe see if there's some non-geek info on apport-bug. I've been building c...

Re: Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.53.109?

I'm having this trouble too. Tried using console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and shutdown -h "now" but it doesn't show anything. Reboot also hangs after turning off monitor. Happened after kernel update. Also having trouble getting boot menu to choose older kernel, but will likely be able to use grub-customizer. JN

"install alongside" erased existing files!

Perhaps premature to say SOLVED. I had a nasty failure today. xviewer jpeg comment?

The side panel for xviewer shows LOTS of information, but not the one thing I want to see -- the jpeg comment that can be read or written by the rdjpgcom and wrjpgcom utilities. Or am I missing something? I'm looking for a simple display tool that puts the comment cleanly below or beside the image a...

I tried this on a Dell Inspiron 3000 11.6" and still got grub installation failure. So the "solution" may be for some systems and not others.

I'm now trying turning off secure boot.

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 “Sylvia” MATE released!

I've upgraded 3 machines (64bit MATE 18.3) using the tool in Update Manager under Edit tab.

Only issue noticed is that on all 3 machines the update notification icon (bottom R on taskbar near date and time) shows
that there are updates when I've done all that are available.
