Re: Why is Xfce using memory?

That makes sense now... I am using proprietary nvidia driver. and using whisker menu (mint 15) I also am running kupfer. Have disabled wifi (using only eth0). So every installation will be different however minute the changes be. I was under the impression that the process image also may be cached a...

Re: Two things missing for me in XFCE

for 1, if it means a scaled thumbnail of all open windows (like OS X expose), then skippy XD can do this. This has to added through PPA.
This is a very light weight program and does not need compiz.

Why is Xfce using memory?

I am just curious, I have seen on some blogs / articles, XFCE takes around 140MB on startup (http://mylinuxexplore.blogspot.in/2013/01/best-linux-distro-of-2012-comparasion.html). Mint 14 XFCE 1-5% 140 MB 9.00 But on my system on startup it takes around 280 to 300 MB. I am using mint 15 XFCE. Does t...

Re: dim linux

This may sound trivial, but you can also check for the brightness settings on BIOS as well. If the BIOS has brightness settings, ensure its set to higher value for AC or Battery as per your requirement.

yes, ABP is ad block plus you can check if the firefox works without the addons, by starting it in safe mode (you can run the following command from terminal): firefox -safe-mode if the scrolling works fine, then one the add ons has an issue. You may try resetting your firefox with Help -> Troublesh...

Re: Trackpad 3-finger click to simulate middle mouse button

hi okko7 were you able to get this solved? Just out of curiosity I tried to check the value on my comp, it is true (I am running gnome fallback session): maya@comp ~ $ gsettings get org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.mouse active true Not sure this changes for cinnamon session though.

Re: what is the command for gnome run dialog (alt+F2)

I managed to figure this out (from a new mint instance in virtualbox) the key binding is: "Show the run command prompt" under keyboard -> shortcuts -> system I tried to get the command it runs, but strangely its related to "gnome-panel" I got the X window ID with xwininfo and PID...

what is the command for gnome run dialog (alt+F2)

I was running VNC server and I hit a bug with gnome settings daemon (wherein it runs at 100% CPU utilization). I have killed that daemon and re booted. Since then, most of my keyboard shortcuts have gone missing. I am currently manually re mapping the keyshortcuts as and when I find them. The shortc...

Re: Installed to flash drive altered boot sector??

I thought lilo is obsolete, good to know that it still being used. Correct me if I am wrong, but it might be possible to install windows boot loader without CD. first boot from grub and select windows to boot. Immediately hit F8 to go to advanced boot menu. Select recovery and from there, do startup...

Re: Mint liveUSB with Kino installed?

Most USB creators should allow persistent storage, which allows software to be installed on live USB.

I have used usb-creator-gtk (availabe from synaptic) and installed rtorrent on it.

So if you have sufficiently big USB to hold Kino, you should be able to install Kino once you create live USB.

Re: Empathy Google Video Chat Not Working

not sure about pidgin / empathy, but have you tried the Google web plugin for video chat? If this as well has problems, then the chances of pidgin / empathy working might be slim. If it works, you can use that OR you have more chances of getting pidgin / empathy working (provided you find the correc...

Re: Running Mint (full version) from Flashdrive, can it be d

you can set the boot loader location on the last step of installation screens

I think its the 8th step (the final step), which has an advance options button, where in you can select when the boot loader is installed.

(just ensure you give proper location that maps to you large USB drive)

Re: Running Mint (full version) from Flashdrive, can it be d

Depending on your flash-drive size, you can reserve part of your flash drive for permanent storage. This will be reatined across re boots (unlike live CD, where you wont be able to save anything once you reboot).

Re: Running Mint (full version) from Flashdrive, can it be d

you can create a live USB stick with usb-creator-gtk. It allows persistence storage as well. Here are the details: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/create-a-linux-mint-8-usb-flash-drive-from-cd/ 4. Open a Terminal and type or copy and paste the following commands: sudo apt-get install usb-creator sudo u...
