Re: Not understanding how to share files with Windows

I ended up deleting my install. It was pretty broken because of the way I'm used to troubleshooting (trying things people have attempted in forums, seeing if that fixes the issue or at least helps me understand it better), and I keep forgetting that linux isn't anything like windows, and I can't jus...

Not understanding how to share files with Windows

Hello linux friends, I am having trouble sharing files from my linux box to my girlfiend's windows 7 box. Here's bascially what I WANT to do: She likes to use her windows machine, I'm trying to learn linux. I have movies and TV shows on my backup hard drive (connected to my linux box) which I can wa...

Re: nVidia Driver issues

You didn't give up on this did you? I know it's hard to find solutions when something isn't working right in linux, but stick with it! You'll get it, I'm sure of it.

Re: nVidia Driver issues

If you haven't already tried the directions in the article you originally posted on here about blacklisting nouveau: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/176 -- you should try that now. If that doesn't work, maybe your hardware just isn't going to mix well with Mint. But as I've said from th...

Re: nVidia Driver issues

Hmmm. It used to boot just fine for me after that. I'm not sure what else to do.... honestly. try removing blacklist nvidia-173 blacklist nvidia-96 blacklist nvidia-173-updates blacklist nvidia-96-updates alias nvidia nvidia-current from the file and see if that works. Other than that, this is likel...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

In my terminal, paste is ctrl+shift+V. Don't know what terminal you're using with it being shift+insert.... That would be super weird... having to use my right hand to paste something. *Shudders*

Re: nVidia Driver issues

That forum is for Mint 9 (Isadora) I had success with this one: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=175&t=49157 And I've seen a couple of threads including this: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=82424&f=191 to do this: sudo echo blacklist nouveau > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouvea...

Re: nVidia Driver issues

So I assume when you install it, linux is running live from the DVD. Is there a way to install grub manually from this live session after your install is finished? You would likely need someone more educated in linux than me for instructions to do something like that, but if it's possible you might ...

Re: nVidia Driver issues

That's really weird. Are you using the guided install or manual? Also what version and flavor of Mint are you installing? Is there a forum or tutorial you are following?

Re: nVidia Driver issues

Hey I tried. Only other thought I had was how I did it before, but I'm not sure if it was the cause of my necessary reinstall. What I did was get the driver from nvidia.com, then did a: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current then I remember a forum telling me something about blacklisting nouveau, can't...

Re: [Solved] numlock on at boot

for KDE:

sudo kate /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup

then add

if [ -x /usr/bin/numlockx ]; then
/usr/bin/numlockx on
fi

to the file and save it.

Just wanted to add documentation to this topic.

Re: nVidia Driver issues

Obviously without being able to see what's going on for myself, I can't really tell you your issue, but I will say this.... I think you broke it. At least, when I get to a point like that (and I had a few of them over the last week -- noob here too) I just reinstall and try again with something diff...

Electric Sheep as your wallpaper (kind of)

So I had heard about electricsheep and I just thought I would attempt to get it running as my background. As a noob this was quite an undertaking, but I managed, and learned something in the process. ^_^ This article helped a lot: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-350089.html Just had to m...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I was more referring to the last time I tried, with Ubuntu. I couldn't really find any answers. That was a while ago. I have actually gotten mint installed and running well with the nvidia-current driver from the 'additional drivers' gui since my last post, and that has given me a bit more courage. ...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I have tried to use linux twice now, both times lasted about a week, once using Ubuntu, and this most recent time using Mint. Both times I've felt completely underwater, unable to swim in the sea of unfamiliarity that is the linux community. The problems I have with linux are basic, and two-fold. On...
