Re: Ryzen and kernel 5.4 problem (Mint 20 MATE)

I have a 3600X, and I haven't experienced any CPU-related problems with the 5.4 kernel in Linux Mint 20. When's the last time you updated your motherboard BIOS?

Linux Mint 20 ISO does not initialize with multiple monitors [SOLVED]

I have two monitors attached via DisplayPort to a GeForce 1080 Ti. Monitor #1 is a G-Sync 144Hz Acer Predator XB271HU, and monitor #2 is a 60Hz ASUS PB278Q.The GRUB menu appears, as does the Mint boot logo, but both monitors turn off before I reach a desktop. When I physically disconnect monitor #2,...

Re: Debian stable to LMDE COVERSION

I tried is as an exercise. Grabbed the netinst image of Debian Sid to ensure package compatibility with Mint's repositories. Installed the image and added the MATE environment + lightdm to login + xorg for basic graphical support. You may have an extra step for proprietary GPU drivers. At that point...

Re: low display resolution after installation of mint 14 cin

That usually happens when you have a newer video card that your version of Linux doesn't recognize out-of-the-box. With Mint, you want to go to the Additional Drivers tool. From the release notes: To install additional drivers, please run the "Software Sources" tool from "Menu->Preferences->Software...

Re: Will LMDE ISO Ever Be Updated?

Any idea when we can expect an ISO? I'm staring anticipatively at the community section's ISO testing page, waiting for something to pop up. It's mentioned in the blog entry about UP6 : Will LMDE get new ISO images with Update Pack 6? Yes, we’re planning to release LMDE Update Pack 6 for the follow...

Re: Mate Windows 7 Dual boot

So if I reinstall W7 it will automatically create an mbr at the start of the disk right? because I don't think the W7 installer asks the user to create one manually. And once I've installed W7 how can I tell the Mate installer to boot from mbr? Also what is the use of extended partitions? Windows w...

Re: No GUI after UP5 - how to get back?

Can you post the output of

Code: Select all

cat /etc/issue
I ask because LMDE updates don't add more desktop environments, and there is no version of LMDE that comes with Gnome 3 built in.

Re: Almost a GB of updates for a fresh install, is that norm

Yeah, I sorted through the blog just now, and they said that a new snapshot will arrive "in the coming weeks/months." Doesn't sound like it's at the top of their priority list :p Oh well. Apparently UP5 is a huge update. When I was using LMDE before, it was hardly getting updates at all, which was w...

Almost a GB of updates for a fresh install, is that normal?

I've been running Mate 13 for awhile and wanted to see how LMDE was doing. I installed LMDE 201204 in Vbox and went straight to mintUpdate like a good little trooper and encountered this: http://i.imgur.com/5kZkC.png The sheer size of the download makes me wonder if I somehow did something wrong, bu...

Re: Wireless in Mint 12, is there any logic?

We're talking about two different things. You're talking about frequency congestion. I'm talking about how the signal of a higher frequency doesn't go as far due to how easily it can be "muffled" by physical obstruction.

Re: Two distributions and one data partition...

Two distros can't share the same /home partition because application version numbering will differ between the two. You'd run into "unmet dependency" issues with apt-get very quickly. Is there a reason why you can't use a portable version of Mozilla on a USB stick, or use a cloud-based scratchpad li...

Re: Wireless in Mint 12, is there any logic?

As for problem 2, I don't know if this will help, but 5GHz is more susceptible to interference. It's a straight-up physics problem; the higher the frequency, the worse it gets. You may want to try moving your laptop around the residence to see if you're in a problematic location. Elevating the route...

Re: Newbie from *Buntu

BTW, ubuntu is not forcing you to use Unity. It's just the default. You could always install XFCE, LXDE, MATE, Awesome, Cinnamon, or whatever DM you want on it. Same with Mint or any other distro. Anyways, welcome to Mint! :D Thanks for the welcome :) I am still trying to understand what cinnamon a...

Re: Mint 12 should I upgrade my laptop's RAM?

DDR2 is unfortunately not as cheap as DDR3, but 4GB is plenty for the use case described here. I too am amazed at how much faster Linux boots to a usable desktop than Windows (where you can actually open programs and get to work instead of listening to the hard drive grind its way through the startu...

Re: solution raises more questions than it answers

Well, that is interesting! though unfortunately, it raises more questions than it answers ... First off, I see no /apps/mate-power-manager in my gconf-editor. Why is that? Well, I used mate-conf-editor to investigate the settings and change them. I don't think it's built into the LMDE image, but it...

Re: how to lock screen on resume from suspend?

I think I just discovered the answer, thanks to the clue in your Boolean string. When you go to MATE's configuration manager, you'll note that the suspend function has a second condition: http://i.imgur.com/6lWFW.png And use_screensaver_settings is enabled by default. You can disable it, or you can ...

Re: Request for Root password for Mint 201204 Mate/Cinnamon

I had the same type of problem with the 64-bit live image. Connecting to a wireless network requires a root password, as does accessing any HDD partition. The live installer silently fails, but I can force it to run through the terminal, but I still get access denied when the installer reaches the p...
