Okay, I got past that by just trying again. Worked on the third attempt. And the install succeeded that time. Wonder if my flash drive is on the fritz...

Re: Trouble installing 17.1 on Dell Inspiron N7010

Is your bios pointing toward the right device on boot? It should go down a list, but some bios exclude certain objects, or stop once they try to boot off the first disk. Unetbootin is known to have issues with some systems. Try opening the iso as an archive and copying the files over to the USB dir...

Re: Games on linux

Having done this dance many times, let me honestly recommend that if you want to play games, just install a bare-bones Windows partition or get a console or something. The selection of Linux games is pretty awful and using WINE for everything gets old fast trying to troubleshoot configuration and co...

[SOLVED] Trouble installing 17.1 on Dell Inspiron N7010

I'm trying to install 17.1 Cinnamon on a Dell Inspiron N1710 and not having a lot of luck. I downloaded the 32-bit 17.1 Cinnamon ISO and used it to make a bootable flash drive with unetbootin. Booted into it and tried an install. The install died saying that it failed to copy some files due to diffe...

In Mint 15, I can open the menu and start typing the word "startup" and I'm shown the "Startup Applications" program.

Re: PDF compression

Sounds like you ran the commands correctly but they didn't do what you were hoping. Apparently you can do this with a utility called ghostscript. Install it: sudo apt-get install ghostscript Then run it: gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/screen -dNOPAUSE -dQUIET -dBATCH -s...

Try opening it from the terminal and seeing what gets printed. The terminal command is just `banshee`.

Re: Can't get Chrome to install

Why not try chromium instead? It's basically the same thing and a heck of a lot easier to install. You can find it in Software Center or get it with `sudo apt-get install chromium`

Re: Make fn+arrow = home/end

Okay, I figured out that xmodmap isn't the right tool to do this. I think I want to create a custom keyboard shortcut. That functionality is broken in Cinnamon (https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1077930), but I was able to work around by bringing back the gnome keyboard settings (http://foru...

Make fn+arrow = home/end

Let's say I have a laptop without home/end keys, or one where those keys are placed somewhere dumb, and I want to make it so that fn+left = home and fn+right = end. I know I can use xmodmap to remap keys on a one-to-one basis (making ctrl be alt for example), but I can't figure out if xmodmap can he...

How does Mint see built-in flash memory?

I'm seeing a lot of ultrabooks that advertise that they include a standard hard drive plus some quantity of flash memory. How does Mint see this? As a second drive?

Acer Travelmate display brightness stuck

My new Acer Travelmate accepted Linux Mint 14 with virtually no drama, which was awesome. There's just one thing that hasn't worked perfectly: I can't seem to change the screen brightness. The Brightness slider in the "Brightness and Lock" setting has no effect when you slide the thumb aro...

Best-supported laptop

I'm looking to get a laptop and put Mint on it of course :) and I'd like the community's opinion on what's best supported. I'm okay fiddling with settings but would like everything to work eventually. Here's basically what I'm looking for: - Hard drive and RAM upgradeable (not soldered onto the moth...

Oh, sorry. Mint 14 Nadia, Cinnamon, and Banshee 2.6.0. It's not new to 14, though. I had the problem intermittently in 12 as well.

Banshee randomly quitting

I've had a problem with Banshee randomly quitting right before it plays the next song for a while now. Seems to happen once every few days, and it's definitely not failing while trying to play the same song (i.e. I don't think it's a corrupted file or something). I recently decided to run Banshee vi...

Re: SimpleScan not working with my scanner; unable to scan

In the end, in Mint 12, my problem was solved by following the instructions on http://robsworldoftech.blogspot.com.au/ ... tu-or.html

In the Mint 14 RC, the problem doesn't exist in the first place! :D
