USB external drives

I'm ashamed to admit, but my dementia has taken even more of my knowledge than I thought. Here's what happened. I have a 1TB external USB drive. I couldn't get it to function properly. The more frustrated I became, the more ill-advised things I did. It now no longer shows up in fstab. mount doesn't ...

Re: Wifi from thumb drive

Alas, phd21. Nuttin' I wonder if another distribution would serve me better? I've added to /etc/hosts. I've changed the driver for wifi. I tried your suggestion, and simply get nowhere. When I power up, netmanager sees Google Starbucks and gives me a 100% signal rating. I click on it, and net manage...

Re: Wifi from thumb drive

That mirrors my experience. I have two HP laptops. #1 is older and slower, but connects to Starbucks' captive portal just fine. #2 is newer and faster, but won't. #1 runs LM 18.3. #2 runs LM 19.1. I thought maybe the difference between the releases might be my problem, so wanted to run #2 from a USB...

You might find something useful here: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/realtek.html https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/internet-problems.html That looked hopeful, but no luck. Re: WiFi support

That's a good theory, but I ordinarily can get on from the Windows 10 partition. Something just went awry this morning. I CAN connect through my phone's hotspot. Very peculiar and it's driving me batty.

Re: WiFi support

I installed the r8168 mod to kernel as you suggested. I chose the Google Starbucks connection and the network manager icon appeared, but showed no signal strength. I ran Chrome and Chrome started re-loading tabs but showed "No Internet". I tried to connect to 172.31.98.1 (the address of the Starbuck...

WiFi support

I hope I've got the right section for this question. I have two HP 15" laptops. #1 runs LM 18.3 and can connect to a captured portal (Starbucks) with no trouble. #2 runs LM 19.1 and connects everywhere EXCEPT Starbucks. How might I diagnose the problem? Drivers? Hardware? Many thanks

LM 19.1 and Starbucks

I'm old and I've forgotten most of what I once knew. Here's my problem: I cannot connect to the Google Starbucks network with my HP laptop. There was a lot of discussion about this some time ago, but it seems to have died down or gone down rabbit holes too technical for me now. So the question is: i...

LM 19.1 and Starbucks

I'm clearly out of my depth and hope someone can help. I have two HP laptops. #1 runs LM 18.3. When I power up at Starbucks, I get a notice that it has auto-connected to Google Starbucks. I then open a browser and enter https://sbux-portal.globalreachtech.com/?cmd=login&mac=60:6d:c7:23:a1:6f&essid=G...

Re: RTL8723DE wireless support

That's very helpful. Thank you. Two quick questions: 1) I'm still running off the thumbdrive. Can I do this without installing to the hard drive?
2) What about the concern over the 4.17 kernel version?
Many thanks in advance

RTL8723DE wireless support

I bought a anew HP and I'm trying to install LM Tessa with the 4.15 kernel. There seems to be no support for this wireless card. After a bit of searching I found some instructions, but it requires the 4.17 kernel. I'd like to demonstrate that everything runs correctly from the USB drive before I wip...

Re: Starbucks again

Browser specific was a good theory, but didn't change the behavior. I'm at Starbucks right now, with two HP machines. The one will connect, the other will not. Machine 1 (does connect) Ip route default via 172.31.98.1 dev wlo1 proto static metric 600 169.254.0.0/16 dev wlo1 scope link metric 1000 17...
