Re: Non smart stuff.

Stay well away from new Vizio "Smart" monitors, they do not have tuners and do not come with a remote. Instead of a remote you have to use an extremely crappy app on your phone.

Re: computer dying - how do I backup my firefox bookmarks?

Bookmarks/Show all bookmarks/click on import export...you should be able to figure it out from there.
I would enable firefox sync so you can fully restore everything latter.

Re: A view from Joe Bloggs.

My only reaction is that the OP must be incredibly incompetent at tech if installing Mint is a challenge. Mint is every bit as easy to install as Windows and OSX and I say that from personal experience.

Re: Best Linux Version for 32gb SSD

The big problem for these little, low spec machines is web browsers. Both Firefox and Chrome will gobble up 2 or 3 GB of ram after they have been running awhile.
I have 6GB of ram and usually have both Chrome and FF open and my 6GB is barely enough.

I have a Firewire card in my current Linux box but I have also used this same card in prior Macs and Windows PCs. Never needed a driver on any of them.

Re: (SOLVED!!!) need audio equalizer for sonya mate 18.2

Even though the thread was marked as solved, I wanted to fill-in with a different approach: - Most if not all music players already have an equalizer built-in - no need for a system wide EQ there, - Ears Audio Toolkit is doing such a splendid EQ job in Chromium, IMHO sounds even better than Pulse A...

Re: need audio equelizer for sonya mate 18.2

I've used the PulseAudio Equalizer for years - not in the repository. Just installed this updated version in tester M18.2 Cinnamon and XFCE and it works fine on my machines both for listed presets and saving custom settings - haven't tried in Mate: http://www.webupd8.org/2013/10/system-wide-pulseau...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

I don't mind a site using the info I enter into that site but I absolutely reject the idea that visiting Google or Facebook gives them the right to track me other places. I will turn off my ad blockers on sites I like and trust, like this one, but my tracking cookie killer gets turned off for no one...

is there any solution???

start with 30mb ram, only open chrome and thunderbird, and 5 min. goes to 65mb, and continue up :x :x

I find that with typical usage Nemo settles in at slightly under 150MB of ram

Re: Firefox Plugin needed for video player

That vid played for me just fine in Firefox and I have never added any codecs to my Mint install other than the multimedia pack when I installed. The vid does load very slow tho and you have to click on the vid after it loads awhile to get it to play even tho there is no indication you have to do th...

Re: Is Firefox too demanding now for older h/ware?

Nope not at all, am running the lastest FF direct from Mozilla v 53.0.3 here. Atm have 9 tabs open "free -m" says memory is 467mbs. Just my views on it, all comes down to tweakage and learning about your OS and/or tweaking Mozilla too. Mint or anything gnu/Linux can be really light or rea...

Re: Is Firefox too demanding now for older h/ware?

I suggest this to determine if it is Firefox itself that is causing your problems, or maybe it is just your Firefox profile. To try a completely new profile, close Firefox. Open the File Manager, use Ctrl+h to show hidden files (or from the menu), and in your home directory you will find a .mozilla...

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

I find that hard to believe. Unless its some form of government subsidy, or all 3 phones are linked to the same number. So there is technically only 1 phone line. I use Ting. Below is a screen grab of my last bill. Three devices, three phone numbers. No subsidy. http://i.imgur.com/ryzmV4U.png

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

Its so cheap too. My bill this month was $53.10 USD for 2 dumb phones. The people at the Verizon store have ever only asked me ONCE if I wanted to upgrade to a smart phone. My answer made them NEVER forget who I was. Quickest service I ever had too, when they really wanted to hurry up and get me ou...

Re: I keep trying to go Android.

I think this is definitely a "to each his/her own" situation. Some people are diehard Apple fans and some are diehard Android fans. I have personally owned both, and both have their pros and cons. However, I have owned more Androids. Personally, I prefer Android. I did own an iPhone 4S an...

Re: Google’s “Fuchsia” smartphone OS dumps Linux

Given how rare it is that Google sticks with something long enough to see it through to a mature product I am going to suspend judgement on this for a year or two.
Odds are Google will get distracted by something new and shiny and forget about Fuchsia.

Re: Based on Mint... or just renamed?

Looks like a nice distro, besides the front page stuff that they advertise(boot menu option, wine pre-installed, theme manager),the system is automatically updated, cinnamon is planing on being forked, it uses lightDM, and user permissions are set to hide one user from another. I think its tailored...

Re: why gnome is so popular?

I have to admit that my disdain for GNOME is as much about the gnome teams attitude as anything else. I come from a back ground in Mac computers and a thing I got completely sick and tired of hearing from Apple was that they knew what I needed more than I knew my own needs. The gnome team displays t...
