Re: Software that you would like to have for Linux

It would never happen in a million years, but HyperCard would be fun to have. And from HyperCard we would get AppleScript. Gee, I haven't seen or heard of that since the late 1980s or very early 90s. I think the only people who know anything about it are those of us who used Macs back in the late 8...

Re: Software that you would like to have for Linux

The only application I miss from OSX is called GraphicConverter. Wow! I haven't thought about GraphicConverter in years! However, in the age of GIMP, I think it would probably be superfluous. GraphicConverter is not like Gimp or Photoshop. It has a set of solid quick edit tools but also has a very p...

Re: Your Computer Specs and Price Paid

I recently paid $335 for a refurbed Dell 7010 with an i7 3770 and 12GB of ram. This thing will last me for years..
My prior system was a C2Quad@2.33 w/8GB ram that I might have had $150 in, used that for 6 years.
I like buying older high end systems, lots of power on the cheap. :D

Re: I made a mistake with timeshift and i lose everything /home

Timeshift did exactly the same thing to me a couple of years ago. TS will silently and without warning delete EVERYTHING on the partition you point it at. In my case it erased my 100GB+ music library. I would not touch timeshift with a ten foot pole and am rather dismayed to see it rolled into Mint....

I'm lazy; I like easy and reliable. I only want to tinker under the hood, when I feel like it. I definitely don't like to be forced to tinker under the hood. Which is why I prefer Mint.
Hear, hear!
Mint is as reliable as a wood burning stove and that is what I want on my computer.

Re: Poor Cinnamon 3.8 article

Well, Mint is not intended for people who are impatient. I like that 3.8 will have been out awhile before Mint gets it, Cinnomon will have all the new bugs squashed by then.

Re: Excited for 19.x

Here comes the party pooper . . . . me. New releases are a necessary evil. Of course they are needed to move technology forward - without them we would all still be running Windows 3.1. But unfortunately they mean new bugs to work out and the inconvenience of getting things that were working just f...

If you go to the System Info panel in Mint you will find a button you can click to send your system info to the Mint devs, it's been there for years.

Re: Font Rendering Lnux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon

There are control for font display located in the "Fonts" control panel in system settings.
But my guess is you are looking at a flattened PDF so you are not looking at fonts, you are looking at an image of fonts and not a good one, like the document was scanned poorly.

Re: With which specs will a new pc last for the next 10 years?

The concept of a "ten year" build has been on my mind lately as well. Tentatively my plan calls for one of the 6 core, 12 threads Ryzen5, an SSD for boot and a big HDD for mass storage of media, 16GB of ram and a dedicated graphics card that can support two 4k screens. My belief is that going forwar...

Re: Linux for my 80 year old father?

Dad broke his laptop when it fell off the table, so I need to get him a new one. I thought about the same HP, but I am intrigued by a Chromebook repurposed for Mint. Any suggestions or ideas? Also if I get him a new, I am thinking about adding an SSD to replace the hard drive so it is faster. Most ...

Re: Annoyed with FF yet?

If I read the story correctly this only effects Pocket, not Firefox itself. Pocket can be disabled and even if it is not disabled, if you don't use it you won't see sponsored content. I am fine with an occasional, non-intrusive ad, generally speaking. The issue has always been about creepy tracking ...

Re: FireFox 57 getting slow

Here's an interesting observation , i've not had a single case of slow down since being back on 18.3 but a couple of days ago i noticed that Mint Firefox was only using 1 core in options/performance where as my other installs such as Debian Sid defaulted to using 4 cores. Well i changed Mint firefo...

Dog treats have to be the worst thing you could ever give to your dog. That crap has more process chemicals than the garbage on the grocery shelves. Rawhide chew.. never. "Naners"- I dont eat them but I get them for treat after "puppy spa day" Eggs- Hard boiled and frozen, peel before serving Bacon...

And now this: You know how you’re supposed to flash the BIOS or update the UEFI on all of your Intel machines, to guard against Meltdown/Spectre? Well, belay that order, private! Intel just announced that you need to hold off on all of its new patches. No, you can’t uninstall them. To use the techni...

Re: The future of the PC OS ?

Microsoft has always been tragically bad at predicting where things were going. They didn't think the Internet was going to be a big thing in the 90s, they didn't think portable digital music was going to be a big thing in the early '00s,they failed to see the threat Linux represented in the server ...

Update Manager Issue.

I have an issue with the update manager in Mint 18.3. In prior versions when all the updates have been applied according to the policy I set I would get the up to date check mark on the update manager's applet in my panel. But now, if there are any updates outside my policy available I get the blue ...
