Re: Firewall GUI (gufw) bugs

Just to let the readers know: The developer contacted me within hours of filing the bug report to ask for a screenshot. Kudos!

I love open source software and the great support you get with it!

Will update when I hear more.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello bash64, thanks for sharing the fix for dual graphics! Regarding Threadripper, and Ryzen too, there are some things to consider. Generally speaking, AMD doesn't support QEMU and Linux as good as Intel does. There have been some major hiccups in the past. Right now most of the CPU features are s...

Firewall GUI (gufw) bugs

The gufw used to be a nice tool to configure the firewall. But in recent years it gives me headaches. Let's say I want to configure ssh and limit access to the local net (192.168.1.0/24): Choose SSH from the preconfigured list, then press the right arrow in the bottom right corner of the windows to ...

Re: Dual booting systems and ransomware

Run Windows in a passthrough VM. It's challenging to set up, but once done, you will probably never look back. See https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=231&t=212692 and there is a newer one I wrote using Pop_OS , but it works with Linux Mint too, except that you need to use grub and not this...

Re: libvirtd logon prompt blocklng access to my computer

You could uninstall Libvirt if you don't run virtual machines.

Before trying to uninstall, stop and deactivate libvirtd. I think its:

systemctl stop libvirtd.service

followed by

systemctl disable libvirtd.service

but I've been hopping distros so I might be wrong with the syntax.

Re: Is there a Mint 20 iso ready for download (for testing) ?

If you want to use Linux Mint as a host to run a Windows VM with GPU passthrough then the upcoming release is almost a must. Linux Mint 19.3 uses ancient QEMU and Libvirt packages that miss many improvements of the last 3-4 years of development. I don't think Arch Linux (or even Manjaro) is an alter...

Re: Cannot Ping Virtual Machine, Qemu

Sorry for the late reply. Did you configure the VM networking with a bridge or did you use the default network configuration? You need to use a network bridge to allow your VM to see your host and vice versa. This works if you have a wired connection to the router. It's more difficult to set it up o...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Linux Mint 20 is expected to be released in June. It's based on the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release so it will come with QEMU 4.2. This is good news as QEMU 4.0 and later have solved some nasty issues with audio and better supports new architectures such as the popular AMD Zen architecture. I myself switch...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

This is great. Good that you found the solution. I was away for some days but in the meantime I found this: https://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Change_cdrom Edit: You may be able to make use of the qemu-ga guest agent to pass commands to qmp, for example to eject the DVD. See: https://wiki.qemu.org/Featu...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello bash64, nice to see that you are still using passthrough (well, why not?). To be frank, I haven't used the command line a lot lately, and my current rig uses libvirt. By the way, do you run a Ryzen 9 3900X? If yes, please share your hardware specs (m/b, BIOS release, etc.). My suggestions to y...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I wrote a new passthrough tutorial, this time using the Virtual Machine Manager . It's based on the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X / X570 platform . I chose an Ubuntu 19.10 based distribution , because of the more up-to-date QEMU, libvirt and virt-manager packages. The upcoming Linux Mint 20 will be based on Ubu...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@bash64: Thanks for responding and sharing your experience - this is what makes the forum so valuable. (I knew I had seen you on the forum long ago and was a little confused.) You do not need to define a bridge, and if you skip the network definition in the script, it should automatically configure ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

p.s. I solved my need for vga arbitration. It was as simple as switching from uefi mode to uefi with csm in my bios. The hardware issue I had went away. Basically, my vga 15 pin port was disabled when using nomodeset on boot. No i915 driver...no vga port signal. Switching to uefi with csm kept the ...

Re: Feature request: update Qemu to version 4.0

Hello, powerhouse. The reason, why Pjotr advises not to hold your breath, is simple: Linux Mint inherits Qemu from Ubuntu. By creating and maintaining Qemu 4.0 .deb installation packages for Linux Mint, the Mint developer team would add an extra work load on their shoulders. Personally I have got t...

Good luck, but don't hold your breath.

In the meantime, you might "roll your own":

Hi Pjotr,

Many thanks for the link - I will check it out and see if this is a way to go.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Powerhouse, I want to install the i915 vga arbiter patch. I am running linux mint 19.1. What is the quickest way to get a kernel installed that has this? I am willing to compile, but so far internet instructions on doing this fail at the patch stage. Thanks The question should be: Do you have to in...

Feature request: update Qemu to version 4.0

I've just posted an "Idea" on the Linux Mint Community, asking the creators of Linux Mint to upgrade Qemu 2.11 to Qemu 4.0. Those who are not familiar with Qemu, it's the software that allows you to run a Windows (or other) virtual machine in such an efficient way that users won't notice the differe...
