Re: Win10 Pro in VM or dual boot?

The log files suggest nothing is wrong. It occurs after the login screen, I just get a blank black screen with a cursor for up to 8 minutes. Again when shutting down I get similar too. So I try and leave it online all the time. After I install Win 10 on my other SSD how do I set up a grub boot mana...

Re: Win10 Pro in VM or dual boot?

Thank you. I think I will try installing it on the seperate ssd for now...seems simpler, although it takes around 8 mins to boot into and out of linux currently so will be a time consuming thing to switch. I am debating just building a new pc specifically for gaming. I also have a gtx 690 lying aro...

Re: Win10 Pro in VM or dual boot?

...I read that if you use a VM you have to use 2 graphics cards or IGP for Linux and Nvidia for Windows etc, is this true? Would be a pain having to keep switching. What do you think I should do best? I like the idea of running Win10 through a VM for security, I would hate to go back to it every da...

Re: Win10 Pro in VM or dual boot?

I'm running Windows in a VM with VGA passthrough and have been doing that for the past 6 years. It may take a little time to set it up properly, but I cannot think about ever going back to dual-boot. Your hardware needs to support IOMMU, that is Intel VT-d. I wrote a tutorial on how to set up a Wind...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I've added a short tutorial for running a Linux VM with VGA passthrough here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=231&t=280540 . If, like me, you use the more powerful GPU for your Windows guest, installing a Linux VM with passthrough allows you to run demanding Linux games with your dedica...

Re: GPU Passthrough Broke Everything Everywhere Visually

Sorry I just saw your post now. I very much hope that you were able to solve the issue quickly. "...my primary graphics card on my motherboard is set to be PCIe slot 2 (1050 ti) and both monitors are wired to that. PCIe Slot 1 (AMD 580) has no monitors..." The first thing I would check is the BIOS s...

Re: QEMU/KVM running slow after kernel update

I'm not sure, but perhaps the firmware updates for Spectre and Meltdown get in the way? I had slow 2D performance in my Windows VM when installing the firmware updates on the Windows VM.

I posted a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/1788665

Tutorial: Linux Virtual Gaming Machine

I've already written tutorials on "how to make dual-boot obsolete...", showing how to run Windows as a VM on Linux without any noticeable performance penalties. In the following tutorial I like to share the steps needed to install a Linux VM with VGA passthrough on a Linux host. You may ask: What's ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

hey all, been a while since I've posted, but today I built a new system for my parents. They needed two work stations and were about to buy a laptop. I ended up building them a system (very similar to my girls') for about 500$. Everything was going perfect, but I couldn't get the windows iso to boo...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I added a new tutorial for Installing a Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04) VM with VGA Passthrough , as well as a post arguing in favor of a Linux Virtual Gaming Machine . Once you installed Windows as a virtual machine with VGA passthrough, it's easy to create a Linux VM that can use the same graphics ca...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I made some updates to my tutorial and added instructions to run the Windows VM in user mode, that is as non-root user. See: https://heiko-sieger.info/running-windows-10-on-linux-using-kvm-with-vga-passthrough/#Part_13_Run_Windows_VM_in_user_mode_non-root It seems rather trivial now with Linux Mint ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945 Ok, no need for the grub file. What does the entries below do? acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=Linux "acpi_osi=Windows 2009" They seem to contradict each other. If you've only done q35, no need to worry. But some people change their machine type and wonder why Windows doesn't boot anymore. Now I wonde...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945: It might be a stupid question, but have you changed your machine type from fx440 to q35? If that is the case, the system won't boot (vice versa is the same). Please post the output of: lspci -kn | grep -A 2 01:00 Could you post the /etc/default/grub file? I see you got tons of options bur...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945 Remove the following from your /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf file: options vfio-pci disable_vga=1 Then run: sudo update-initramfs -u options vfio-pci disable_vga=1 is for OVMF (UEFI) boot only! You are using SeaBIOS. What is blacklist acpi-call ? Never saw it. Leave it in the file if unsure. T...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

UPDATE: For those reading I have a laptop with nvidia optimus. I have good news. the i915 driver is no longer preventing qemu from booting. Sorry, I do not know if an update to the driver or qemu fixed the issue, but I have removed nomodeset from my boot line , the i915 driver loads, and windows10 ...

Re: Terrible FPS on Counter Strike:GO

I believe I read about new Nvidia Linux drivers having some regressions and leading to sub-par performance. Could it be that with Linux 18.x you had an older driver? Another thing: Open a terminal and enter: top Watch the top CPU intensive tasks and see if there are any Xorg, compiz or other display...

Re: Windows to linux.

One more option is to run Windows on Linux using VGA passthrough. Performance-wise this might be the best option, if you get the configuration right. It means running Windows as a virtual machine (VM) on Linux using kvm. However, the setup can be a little more demanding than just installing some pac...
