Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Can someone help me? I am having Problem isolating the GPU. I tried https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=231&t=212692&start=40#p1173262 https://pastebin.com/WSmrFtpL and the one from Archwiki. but it does not work: dmesg | grep -i vfio [ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.15...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

hey all, been a while since I've posted, but today I built a new system for my parents. They needed two work stations and were about to buy a laptop. I ended up building them a system (very similar to my girls') for about 500$. Everything was going perfect, but I couldn't get the windows iso to boo...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I added a new tutorial for Installing a Linux Mint 19 (Ubuntu 18.04) VM with VGA Passthrough , as well as a post arguing in favor of a Linux Virtual Gaming Machine . Once you installed Windows as a virtual machine with VGA passthrough, it's easy to create a Linux VM that can use the same graphics ca...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I made some updates to my tutorial and added instructions to run the Windows VM in user mode, that is as non-root user. See: https://heiko-sieger.info/running-windows-10-on-linux-using-kvm-with-vga-passthrough/#Part_13_Run_Windows_VM_in_user_mode_non-root It seems rather trivial now with Linux Mint ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945 Ok, no need for the grub file. What does the entries below do? acpi_osi=! acpi_osi=Linux "acpi_osi=Windows 2009" They seem to contradict each other. If you've only done q35, no need to worry. But some people change their machine type and wonder why Windows doesn't boot anymore. Now I wonde...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945: It might be a stupid question, but have you changed your machine type from fx440 to q35? If that is the case, the system won't boot (vice versa is the same). Please post the output of: lspci -kn | grep -A 2 01:00 Could you post the /etc/default/grub file? I see you got tons of options bur...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@s2156945 Remove the following from your /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf file: options vfio-pci disable_vga=1 Then run: sudo update-initramfs -u options vfio-pci disable_vga=1 is for OVMF (UEFI) boot only! You are using SeaBIOS. What is blacklist acpi-call ? Never saw it. Leave it in the file if unsure. T...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

UPDATE: For those reading I have a laptop with nvidia optimus. I have good news. the i915 driver is no longer preventing qemu from booting. Sorry, I do not know if an update to the driver or qemu fixed the issue, but I have removed nomodeset from my boot line , the i915 driver loads, and windows10 ...

Re: Terrible FPS on Counter Strike:GO

I believe I read about new Nvidia Linux drivers having some regressions and leading to sub-par performance. Could it be that with Linux 18.x you had an older driver? Another thing: Open a terminal and enter: top Watch the top CPU intensive tasks and see if there are any Xorg, compiz or other display...

Re: Windows to linux.

One more option is to run Windows on Linux using VGA passthrough. Performance-wise this might be the best option, if you get the configuration right. It means running Windows as a virtual machine (VM) on Linux using kvm. However, the setup can be a little more demanding than just installing some pac...

Re: Post your Passmark results of your Windows VM

It turns out the Windows 10 (1803) Spectre protection security update(s) play havoc with 2D graphics performance. All other benchmarks are fine. Here my current system specs: i7 3930K overclocked to 4.2GHz Nvidia GTX 970 for Windows guest Samsung 860 EVO SATA 1TB with LVM for Windows guest 24GB memo...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

For the past 3 months I noticed a severe drop in 2D performance on my Windows VM. I posted benchmarks and more details in a separate thread here . I rolled back Nvidia drivers - no difference. I checked and reconfigured hugetables - nope. I reinstalled Windows 1803 - no dice. I changed qemu script ...

Re: KVM low 2D graphics performance

Thanks to a member at the reddit r/VFIO group I found the reason for the low 2D graphics performance. It turns out the Spectre vulnerability protection update in Windows didn't play well with 2D graphics. Since good 2D graphics performance is essential for photo editing under Windows, I disabled the...

[SOLVED] KVM low 2D graphics performance

I'm running Windows 10 in a virtual machine using kvm with VGA passthrough (see my tutorial sticky). For the last 6 years I got nearly identical benchmarks when comparing to Windows on bare metal. Now my Windows 2D performance is down to a fraction of what it used to be. I ran the Passmark 8 benchma...

Re: PrintScreen screenshot shortcut keys not working

Check that you don't have Fn lock active. If that's not it and shortcuts in general are still working: Menu > Keyboard Shortcuts and recreate the shortcuts if they still exist. Your chosen keyboard map might not actually place PrtScr where you think it is. Thanks! In the meantime I found the soluti...

Re: PrintScreen screenshot shortcut keys not working

As I wrote the above post, I found a way to fix it: -> Control Center -> Keyboard Shortcuts Press +Add and fill in as below: Screenshot at 2018-08-11 21-25-38.png Apply and select "Disabled", then press the key combination (usually <PrScr> or <Alt>+<PrScr>) Hope this helps someone. I wonder why thes...

[SOLVED] PrintScreen screenshot shortcut keys not working

The shortcuts to printscreen don't work, neither <PrintScr> nor <Alt> + <PrintScr>

Menu -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot works as advertised.

Annoying! One more thing to fix.
