Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

thanks, i upgraded the laptop to 32gb of ram. when running fallout 4 i gave it 20gb because the game was a huge resource hog. giving the machine all 4 cores with 8 threads was normal for me. i can reduce it for now. been trying endless seabios files. no luck yet. i'll wait a few weeks till i have t...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi bash64, This does sound annoying, especially if you don't have a (full) backup. One thing that sticks out is the qemu script: -smp 8,sockets=1,cores=4,threads=2 \ -m 20G \ It means that you pass 4 cores/8 threads to the VM, as well as 20 GB of memory. Seems rather a lot for a laptop and might pre...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello, I seem to have failed to click submit on my last post. I'll shorten it here: I installed linux mint 19 beta. I am getting kvm internal errors. Have you had time to look into this? I did not change my qemu setup in any way and it always worked. I keep my full setup on an external 1TB SSD incl...

Re: Random timestamp changes on read-only SAMBA share

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu, but there are some differences. I don't know whether or not they have a bearing on your problem, though. My guess is that your Windows backup utility reads the Samba file attributes somewhat differently, or that they aren't exactly identical with the way Windows handle...

Re: Random timestamp changes on read-only SAMBA share

When you are sharing a Linux file system like ext4 using Samba, it's quite possible that not all file and directory attributes are shared. You may check to see if the Windows ACLs are supported, see https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Setting_up_a_Share_Using_Windows_ACLs . Also look at http://pig.made...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Just a short update: 1. A good place to look for working VGA passthrough configurations is https://passthroughpo.st/vfio-increments/ . Not only gives this table a good overview of configurations that work, but it also lists some of the pitfalls and work-arounds. 2. Max Ehrlich is producing the lates...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

If you have upgraded your kernel to 4.15 and experience problems with USB controller or HBA passthrough, look at this: https://passthroughpo.st/linux-kernel-4-15-introduces-usb-controller-bugs-vfio/ . https://passthroughpo.st/ is a website dedicated to VGA passthrough and provides some very good inf...

Re: mintupdate 5.1.0.5

Finally they removed the Vbox guest additions! To the OP: If you install Linux Mint on bare metal , that is directly on the PC and NOT in a virtual machine, you don't need the Vbox guest additions . They are useless! If you install Linux Mint in a VirtualBox virtual machine , you should get and inst...

Re: VM crashes host - need help diagnosing

I agree with the above - Windows 10 will not work with 2 Gig RAM, especially if you try to run Photoshop or Illustrator. You should give it 4 Gig RAM, at the least.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Nevermind. I figured it out. Haswell has a issue where hdmi sound is broken when iommu is enabled in grub. To fix it i put "intel_iommu=on,igfx_off". I did not realise at the time that this will in turn break pci passthrough. I got passthrough to work up to the point where the driver is installing ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi all! I had a working configuration using this guide with one Nvidia card (1060) and the builtin Intel GPU (skylake). However, I recently got a new monitor which I wanted to use with Linux as well, so I added a second Nvidia GPU (1030), as the Intel one didn't output 4K. Now I've done a fresh Min...

Re: QEMU Bridged networking over wifi + subnet/NAT stuff

I ended up doing a passthrough of my wifi card and using a wifi dongle for the host. My computer has two unused Ethernet ports on the back, with different controllers. Maybe I could make use of that somehow? Connect to wifi normally, but use the two ethernet ports to create a fake LAN network betwe...

Re: QEMU Bridged networking over wifi + subnet/NAT stuff

Hello Quirken. This whole networking thing is unfortunately quite a pain in the neck. My how-to describes how to set up networking using bridging, that is a layer 2 protocol (Ethernet / MAC addresses). However, wireless access routers do not support bridging, only layer 3 (IP networking). ebtables i...

Hi,
I have the same after upgrade to Sylvia Cinnamon but following the instructions the reported lack of support for locale: en_US.utf8 disappeared.

Thanks in advance
Thanks! I had never anticipated that this "fix" would be relevant for such a long time.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I am having issues accessing an audio cd with qemu. I added "-cdrom /dev/sr0" to my script. The cdrom drive is visible in windows. I insert the music cd and then boot but get an error about unreadable format. If i eject it and boot and then insert windows complains of an unreadable format. I have a...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@vitriolicex First, fix the bash script: Change -device vfio-pci,host=03:00.1, \ to -device vfio-pci,host=03:00.1 \ Second, you may need to add this to your grub file /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset vga=normal video=vesafb:off" If the above doesn't help: You have two nearly identica...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@driz: I updated/upgraded a dozen times and almost never had an issue with it. The last time I remember having a problem was with Xen, that was probably 4-5 years ago. That said, I really feel for you. Your setup is different from mine, for once you pass through drives, though I don't think that sho...
