Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@vitriolicex First, fix the bash script: Change -device vfio-pci,host=03:00.1, \ to -device vfio-pci,host=03:00.1 \ Second, you may need to add this to your grub file /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset vga=normal video=vesafb:off" If the above doesn't help: You have two nearly identica...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

@driz: I updated/upgraded a dozen times and almost never had an issue with it. The last time I remember having a problem was with Xen, that was probably 4-5 years ago. That said, I really feel for you. Your setup is different from mine, for once you pass through drives, though I don't think that sho...

Logitech Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

For some inexplicable reason an admin closed another thread on this subject. I like to report that I successfully use a Logitech K780 multi-device wireless keyboard and a Logitech MX Master wireless multi-device mouse. I had originally paired them in my Windows 10 VM, but found a Linux native applic...

Re: UserBenchmark - post your results

The UserBenchmark website actually provides a lot of information that can help select the right hardware as well as compare and improve performance. I wrote a post on that here.

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

...Odtech, powerhouse, thanks for your replies! Mainly, the reasons I was debating whether to use this or virt-manager were / are: - Memory usage; using hugepages, I can dedicate 24 GB of ram to Windows, but the memory isn't usable in Linux even when the VM isn't running. I'd like to be able to use...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hi powerhouse, thanks for making this tutorial. If you don't mind, I'd like some guidance. I just built a new system specifically for VGA passthrough. Specs are as follows: Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K7 AMD Ryzen 1600x Nvidia GTX760FTW (for Linux) Nvidia GTX970FTW (for passthrough) 32GB memory 120GB ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

hey powerhouse. I need help switching to using a real drive. I followed your link to using qemu images but there is nothing there about using real drives or LVM. I bought a 512gb pny thumb drive,. it has read/write at 400/250mbsec. I used pv to copy my existing image file to it. I can see the parti...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

Hello, Powerhouse, Have you tried using looking glass yet? You have to have a quadro professional card, but it changes qemu so that you do not need an external monitor for the gaming card. You see your VM in a window with full gaming. https://looking-glass.hostfission.com/ I will never buy a quadro...

kvm VGA passthrough with an Optimus laptop is not impossible anymore. Just did that myself, with OVMF. The Code 43 error bash64 once encounter might be the incorrect Subsystem ID. Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I have no idea regarding 4.9+ kernel and ACS patch. You can check the kernel sources and look at the change log. It should be listed. See https://www.kernel.org/ and https://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_4.9 . Where did you read that kernel 4.9+ includes the ACS patch? I didn't see it, but haven't resear...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using kvm VGA passthrough

I've read on several forums that the acs override patch has been added since kernel version 4.9. I installed kernel 4.13 the other day and it doesn't work. Is this true or is it hit and miss depending on hardware? Just to be sure, you did modify your grub file to enable ACS and ran update-grub? If ...

Thanks odtech! I totally missed the comment.

You are right, the qemu command can't be commented. I usually copy the command option to the end of the script and the place a # in front. The bash script allows #, just not the qemu command.

@Foxybingo15: Could it be that your Windows 10 image file is damaged? Try download it again and use the new file then. Another user here had similar issues and it turned out it was because of a corrupted file. If the above doesn't help, have a look here: https://forum.level1techs.com/t/ryzen-virtual...

@Foxybingo15 : EDIT: In the start script, change the smp option to "smp 4" - you specified the architecture for my CPU, which supports hyperthreading, yours is different and doesn't support hyperthreading. When you first run the script to install Windows, specify the boot order to have it boot from ...
