Re: Advantages of a Liquorix Kernel ?

Experiencing problems with ATI hardware is not a good sign. I'm an "Nvidia man" myself, but the ATI gear is not exotic in any way. Personally, I would agree with the "stick with the Debian kernel" remark. Have been using Debian, and now LMDE, for almost 12 years and would need to see a lot more spee...

LMDE search needs improved

One expects there would be near total agreement that Linux Mint LMDE and "regular" Ubuntu based Linux Mint are two different products with differing specifics about the best technical solutions to problems. The problem I keep encountering is when I need to search for a specific topic or problem and ...

Re: how to install a newer version of the Libre Office?

Most of what you are seeing is terminology only. "Shortcuts" and "Launchers" contain substantially the same info. Have not had a problem with these interchanging myself - but REMEMBER, the desktop information are kept in different places and separate files not just in KDE and Gnome (Cinnamon, Mate, ...

Iceape getting a bit old...

There have been a number of updates to Firefox for (according to CERT, etc.) some pretty serious sounding security issues. Any plans to update Iceape to incorporate these? Am starting to get friction from some of the higher security websites I use each week, and messages from within Iceape every tim...

Re: Watch out for newest Intel Atom processors

Many of the new devices coming out are "ARM" compliant (http://www.softwarefreedom.org/blog/2012/jan/12/microsoft-confirms-UEFI-fears-locks-down-ARM/) and will only work with Microsoft products. The entire line of Atom processors is supposed to be afflicted by this decision. More info available at h...

Re: Nvidia settings don't stick

Solved this on one of my computers (the other has a whole different Nvidia prob) by simply logging out, Ctrl-Alt {2} to switch "TTY" (virtual terminal), log in as ROOT (you will need to activate the ROOT user, using the "passwd" command followed by a ROOT login is probably fastest), run X "startx", ...

Java security issue - update required?

The recent severe security flaw discovered in Oracle Java (https://blogs.oracle.com/java/entry/java_vulnerabilities_addressed) that allows the possible installation of "ransomware" has been addressed by the release of Java SE Update 11. Is IcedTea Java and the other Java tools and accessories in Deb...

Re: Ok, I'm going to debian from now on...

Seems to me the idea is to make life easier for the largest number of users. With storage space as cheap as it is and the [now] relatively small amount of space taken up by including packages like VirtualBox that could be a challenge for novice users to correctly install; to opt to include packages ...

Cinnamon won't start after crash

Was looking through some old CD's, trying to find a backup I needed, clicked in an old .avi file selecting "Open with..." Mplayer - the system crashed instantly - blowing out of X and triggering a re-boot of the system. When I tried to restart, Cinnamon (the default) GUI would not start. Mate and al...

Re: Cinnamon not starting

Still I can't understand what exactly went wrong with that package. It's supposed to be optimized for 686. Did this because I use this computer for video editing and I have a GeForce 9500, which worked fine with the proprietary driver in Win Vista, but now it feels slow in Linux with nouveau. Guess...

Re: Added Repository: now get an error message.

Thanks zerozero! that fixed it. This is what I get when I try to update the repositories, and I have the debian-multimedia keyring properly installed and working. I have also tried to import the GPG key from a working Mint Debian machine... W: GPG error: http://packages.linuxmint.com debian Release...
