Re: Installing the best Linux distro

You need to try enough Linux distributions to be able to choose the one that best suits your needs. For example, some people like rolling release distributions because of the frequently updated packages, while others prefer long-maintained release distributions. Each has its advantages and disadvant...

Yes, that's what I thought too, but is this setting also valid for distribution updates, or only for simple package updates?

Re: Will upgrading to Linux Mint 21 overwrite grub, installed by another Linux distribution on a dual boot system?

Boot into EndeavorOS, update configuration / re-install grub, next time you will see EndeavorOS's themed / specific version of grub. Yes, I know that from the other side, so if Linux Mint's Grub happens to be the bootloader, then the solution you described will be the right one, I have done it befo...

Re: Will upgrading to Linux Mint 21 overwrite grub, installed by another Linux distribution on a dual boot system?

With legacy boot there is only room for one bootloader - it lives in the first sector on the drive with the second stage bootloader hiding in the gap between the end of the partition table and start of the first partition. So the last OS installed will overwrite the previous bootloader, or in your ...

Re: Will upgrading to Linux Mint 21 overwrite grub, installed by another Linux distribution on a dual boot system?

I'm not at the machine right now, but just to clarify. A single disk has Windows 10, Linux Mint 20, and EndeavorOS installed in that order. Booting is done by Grub created during EndeavorOS installation. A previous package update on Linux Mint also updated the Grub package and overwrote the Grub ins...

Will upgrading to Linux Mint 21 overwrite grub, installed by another Linux distribution on a dual boot system?

During a normal package update on Linux Mint 20, I noticed earlier, that grub was also among the packages to be updated, and a package update using the Update Manager overwrote the grub, installed by another Linux distribution (legacy BIOS). That's why I'm asking what the situation is in this regard...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

Hello, all41. Since the new FF/LM partnership we now download the entire FF package 62mb every few days -- instead of getting patches. Why is that? It has been this way all the time, throughout the 10 years, which I have been using Linux Mint now. It is the same way on Ubuntu as well, which I start...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

Load can differ between servers. It's random which server you're on. It has to be this--the same ff update for other distros is 10 to 15 times faster. Since the new FF/LM partnership we now download the entire FF package 62mb every few days --instead of getting patches. Why is that? I know the full...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

Sounds like mixed results, as before. We didn't get enough information last night to say what is happening but we'll monitor it again with next Firefox update. There are multiple servers behind packages.linuxmint.com and it's random which you are connected to. So if it's slow through Update Manager...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

Interestingly, this error only does not occur with Ubuntu, but specifically with Linux Mint. Ubuntu receives Firefox updates from the Ubuntu software repositories. Linux Mint receives Firefox updates from the Linux Mint repository. Different repositories, different server farms. Yes, I'm aware of t...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

There has been no problem with the download speed of the Firefox update lately, so stay tuned. Interestingly, this error only does not occur with Ubuntu, but specifically with Linux Mint.

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

I just updated packages now, and Firefox was one of them. Surprisingly, the download was now at normal speed. Apparently, this download speed problem is really only temporary and unrelated to the choice of mirrors.

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

I don’t always experience this slow, sometimes intermittent download when updating Firefox. When you try to update again, the download will usually be at normal speed. . In any case, a workaround in these cases is to use the command line, or possibly temporarily change the default mirror.

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

Hm. Only a few minutes ago Firefox 96.0.3 has been updated to 97.0 from the Linux Mint main repo servers. I could quote my own previous post above , replacing 96.0.3 by 97.0. Means, one more time no noticeable speed problems here when downloading the Firefox 97.0 packages. $ apt-cache policy firefo...

Re: Slow download speed of Firefox browser updates

I have experienced the same thing that several people have written here, downloading Firefox in Update Manager is very slow. Replacing the mirror does not significantly change this defect either. In contrast, the Firefox update on the command line runs normally. Anyway, it's pretty weird.

Re: Some packages cannot be updated with the Linux Mint Update Manager: IP address not found

This varies depending on which application from an external source cannot be updated. In the past, for example, Firefox in Linux Mint's own repo didn't want to update in Update Manager.

Re: Some packages cannot be updated with the Linux Mint Update Manager: IP address not found

Thanks, I will try, although I don’t think there would be any change. Such an update error is logically more likely if you do not use the default mirror.
