Re: Monthly News – March 2019

I really never thought in a million years that I'd end up saying this on here.

Re: Space problem in Root - tmp folder huge!

Thank you smurphos, and Larry78723. As I would like to continue using the Software Manager, and many things there are using Flatpak, I'll try the latest Flatpak version first and see how I get on. I can always disable Flatpak later if I'm still having the problem. I have already deleted the caches i...

Re: Space problem in Root - tmp folder huge!

Thanks thx-1138. I'll do that, but how do I stop this problem returning? I'd like a fix for the Flatpak problem, if anyone knows how.

Re: Space problem in Root - tmp folder huge!

OK, I've tried harder to research this and found that this is a known problem with Flatpak. See here: https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/issues/1119 But, what should I do about it? Is there something wrong with the version of Flatpak included in Mint 19.1, or is this problem due to upgrading 18, 18....

Space problem in Root - tmp folder huge! [SOLVED]

I am not exactly a Newbie, but I don't understand the newer versions of Mint as well as I did the older ones. I'm running Mint 19.1 (upgraded from 18) on a dual boot laptop with 128GB SSD. I have separate / and /home partitions, with 32GB given to /. When I examine the root in Disk Usage Analyser I ...

Re: chrome or firefox?

@cliffcoggin, no, not Natwest., although I understand RBS is part of that group. It's not as if I'm locked out, as the app on Android is fine and Firefox still works on my laptop. It seems to be something in Chrome and Chrome derivatives though. I've just had an update to the Chrome software (Versio...

Re: chrome or firefox?

@Benedetto I have just downloaded and installed Brave, to give it a spin. Again, as with Chrome, it will not load my banking website login page: :This site can’t be reached The connection was reset. Try: Checking the connection Checking the proxy and the firewall ERR_CONNECTION_RESET All other sites...

Spellcheck in Thunderbird

Hi everyone. I'm now using Thunderbird 60.4.0 (64-bit), and have suddenly found that the spellcheck has gone a bit strange. I have the English (United Kingdom) language set loaded, which has worked fine for years, but suddenly I get loads of new errors flagged which are not errors at all. It seems t...

Re: chrome or firefox?

Interesting thread, to me. I've been a long time user of Firefox, and loved it until recently. Since the more recent upgrades (now 65.0) I ran into more and more issues on many websites, particularly with forms filling and overlaying of elements within the web page. After struggling for a long time ...

Re: Canon PIXMA TS8150 driver capabilities

OK. I said that I would come back and report, and I just never quite got around to it. Never mind, I'm here now. The printer installed wonderfully well, using the driver supplied by Canon from their website. The printer works just fine (so far) and I'm much happier with it than I was with my previou...

Re: PDF printing : problem with inverted colours.

Thanks Hoser Rob. It could be that - but yes, I do have the Canon drivers installed, from Canon. The printer behaves almost perfectly in all other ways, with all other documents, and the photo printing is damned good. Only the scanner poses problems (with SANE). Since the inverted colours only happe...

PDF printing : problem with inverted colours.

Hi everyone. I am using fully updated Mint 19.0 Cinnamon on a Dell XPS15 laptop and a Canon TS8150 printer. I've just purchased (at some expense) a large PDF file of needlework patterns for one of my wife's Christmas presents. These patterns are dense in text and line drawings, but have inserted pho...

Re: Mount only at backup time? [SOLVED]

@mintjelly Whew, that took some finding. The following was located on my old SSD at [root]/.config/backintime user-callback listed as a program (because it is executable). #!/bin/bash # Copyright (c) 2012-2015 Germar Reitze # # This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify # i...

Re: Mount only at backup time? [SOLVED]

Hi mintjelly. I can try to find it for you, but I can't promise any success. Time moves on, and my wife has persuaded me to ditch the old noisy giant PC and I've now got a sleek new laptop with only a 256GB SSD. My backups are now on the old HDDs in caddies, which I have to plug in and manually use ...

Please accept my apologies to all on this thread. My thanks and particular apologies are extended to smurphos and gm10 for their gallant efforts on my behalf. Re: Who likes random music on their player?

For anyone following this discussion: I've found a 'work around' using the music player 'Clementine'. This will happily assemble a random playlist from my music selection into any target destination I choose, ready to transfer to my other device, or even direct to that device. The only drawback is t...

Re: [SOLVED] Thunderbird 60 has no Calendar

Thank you so much saljut7 !!! I've recently dismantled my old PC using LM18.3 and started using a brand new laptop, on which I installed LM19. I only just noticed that the calendar had gone missing and thought confused?! If I hadn't found this post of yours, I was on the verge of ditching Thunderbir...

Re: [Solved, Kind of] Reboot Hang, Freeze and Hardware Issues on Dell XPS 15

Hi guguma I too am using a Dell XPS15 256GB SSD Dual boot with Win10 and LM19. I'm trying to sort out why it hangs when it goes into 'suspend' in Mint. I have the Nvidia drivers loaded and running, the only other option offered is the Nouveau driver. How do you revert to the Intel driver? EDIT: [SOL...

Re: Custom partitioning - SWAP? [SOLVED]

Yes lewtwo. But that never seems to be quantified. I'm very new to Windows 10, not having ever used Vista, 7 or 8. I had to use XP at work before I retired, but only in a corporate way which meant I never manipulated it in any way. I've been Linux only at home since some time around the "Millenium B...
