Dell laptop (UEFI) GParted doesn't see Windows?

Hi. I'm trying to re-size the Windows 10 partition on my new Dell XPS 15 9570. As this is UEFI I'm unfamiliar with the situation. I've got as far as unencrypting the C: drive, switched off Secure Boot and Fastboot, and reset the startup order to USB then Windows. Windows boots normally. If I put in ...

Re: Custom partitioning - SWAP?

Thanks gm10. I'm quite happy to make a swap partition, so I'll go with that, I can give it 16GB or similar, so there's room if needed. The old PC has 16GB RAM, so I don't think the swap was ever needed, but this is a different case. Most of my big files (pictures, music, videos) will be moved from /...

Custom partitioning - SWAP?

Hi everyone. I've been a bit too busy since my birthday to deal with my new laptop, and I suspect I'll not get much time over the next three days to do much with it. This machine is to replace my long standing 'desktop PC' which is showing it's age now and 'm fed up of the space it takes up and the ...

New SSD only laptop. How do I use removable USB disk drives?

Hi everyone. I'm not exactly a newbie, I've been using Linux for a long time, and exclusively Linux Mint for at least the last 10 years. However, I'm giving up my homebrewed desktop PC. This machine currently has a 120GB SSD with /, /boot, /home on it. I also have 2 x 2TB HDDs. One with two 1TB part...

Re: Double audio on Youtube

Thanks Flemur. The start in safe mode works OK. I suspect that the add-on that prevents the YT adverts getting through is the cause, and theat the second audio starts once the advert I would otherwise have seen ends. Perhaps something to do with the 'skip this ad' timing? Anyway, I'll clean up my Fi...

Double audio on Youtube [SOLVED]

Hi everyone. I am using Firefox 60.0.2 (64-bit) on Mint 18.3 and have the following problem with it, although it has been there through earlier iterations of Firefox and on Mint 18.2. When starting to view a new video on Youtube, it usually comes up initially as expected, and then a few seconds late...

Intermittent mouse input problem.

Hi everyone. For many months now, and on more than one iteration of Linux Mint with Cinnamon (at least Mint 17, 17.1, 17.2, 18, 18.1, 18.2, 18.3) I have been suffering from the mouse movements being slow/intermittent at intervals. Some of these are long intervals, and the break in service has been a...

Re: Monthly News – January 2018

Me Too!! The trouble shooting guide helped me enormously to finally resolve a long standing problem I had with my PC. In a sense, it helped with my limp :-) The PC had a limp at intervals where it didn't respond to any mouse input (hardware mis-match). Thank you and all the team for their wonderful ...

Re: Security notice: Meltdown and Spectre

Just a note to say that I've updated my Mint 18.3 Cinnamon kernel to 4.13.0-26 today, as offered by the Update Manager. It seems to be working OK on my machine, YMMV.
Note to those not used to doing kernel updates: they will not take effect until the machine has had a restart.

[SOLVED] Re: Format SD card - permissions?

Woo-hoo! That worked OK Chris, thanks for the pointer!
Something to watch out for in the future then. I wonder how much interest there is in fixing this bug, and whether it is fixed in 18.3?

Re: Format SD card - permissions?

Interesting Chris, thanks. My system is shut down every night, but I haven't tried a reboot since I formatted that SD card. I'll give it a try.

Re: Format SD card - permissions?

Well, neither do I normally. When I plug the SD card into my SD card reader, the shortcut appears, so I used it. However, even if I go in through Nemo, or by the menu item Places, which opens the /media/ian/2GB_MISC in Nemo, I still can't write to it.

Re: Format SD card - permissions?

No, when I try to write to: /media/ian/2GB_MISC opened via the Places menu, I still get the same error message "The destination is read-only"

Re: Format SD card - permissions?

Hi Mute Ant. Yes, I had set the switch in order to format it in the first place. What confuses me is that the linux format system makes it 'Read Only'!

[SOLVED[ Format SD card - permissions?

Hi everyone. I'm trying to reuse an old SD card, (it happens to fit my printer!). The problem is, having formatted it using the Preferences:Disks format utility, it is now marked as 'Read Only'. I have failed so far to find any easy way to change permissions on this card - mainly I suspect because i...
