Re: Location of sources.list in Mint17

Well, I was talking about command line tools: having more or less become used to them, I always use nano /etc/apt/sources.list to view/edit them (if required) , with the plus of syntax highlighting.

When they are in other location(s), that doesn't work so smoothly.

Re: Location of sources.list in Mint17

I was wondering why in Mint17 the sources.list file does only contain a reference to the installation CD, whereas the actual sources are in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list instead. Why is that? Unless I may have changed that manually and then forgot about it, in Mint13 I ...

Re: After update, cannot enable/disable networking

I'll answer myself this time: digging in the /var/cache/apt/archives (I try not to delete anything) I've retrieved an older network-manager-gnome package, so I've re-installed it with dpkg and then put it on hold.

Re: After update, cannot enable/disable networking

With Mint 13 and Ubuntu 12.04 the newest NetworkManager can cause a situation where you cannot edit or disconnect. The solution is to downgrade NetworkManager. 1. Download network-manager-gnome_0.9.4.1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb for 32-bit system or network-manager-gnome_0.9.4.1-0ubuntu2_amd64.de b for 64-b...

Re: After update, cannot enable/disable networking

To be fair, I don't care for level 4 or 5 updates: after breaking my Mint 13 installation a couple of times (and recovering it from backups) I think (or hope?) that I more or less got the hang of what can break it again, so I just upgrade the packages I want from a terminal and eventually put on hol...

Re: After update, cannot enable/disable networking

Thank you very much, I thought it was an issue on my system only.

Are there any disadvantages (other than having to go through System settings each time, obviously) or maybe security issues in keeping the current package?

After update, cannot enable/disable networking

More precisely: after a recent update of network-manager package in Mint 13 MATE, an annoying glitch has appeared on my system, in that I can start the network manager (I have it disabled on boot) and connect to the internet, but after that if I want to disconnect or restart the network manager from...

Re: How can I change a mimetype icon for certain files?

Thank you very much, this is very useful information, for instance I didn't imagine that you could simply rename a png icon to svg . Thinking of it, I may have missed the right folder where to drop the icon/symlink, as I'm bit confused between mate and gnome folders (I have both in /usr/share/icons ...

How can I change a mimetype icon for certain files?

I'd like to change the mimetype icon for .xpi files (Firefox extensions), in older Ubuntu releases it was the generic package-x-generic.svg icon, now in current Ubuntu/Mint releases it is a generic "empty file" type of icon (at least in MATE) : after checking /etc/mime.types the application/x-xpinst...

I've tried to add tomboy to startup applications,I don't think we're talking about the same issue,as this hasn't solved the bug I've originally reported.

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

By any chance, does anybody have a clue about why sometimes I can normally launch synaptic from the GUI and sometimes I can't ?

This annoying issue has surfaced a couple of months ago and it's,by the looks of it,totally random:I can't isolate under which conditions it does or does not work.

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

Thanks for following this weird issue,as of now everything seems back to normal, but goes without saying I'm not too confident about this thing-since it randomly happens that sometimes I can't launch Synaptic and sometimes I can, without modifying anything on my system, that brings up the (paranoic) cu...

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

Even more weird:sometimes I can launch Synaptic from the GUI normally,i.e. I can click its icon in the menu and I get a prompt for the password, sometimes nothing happens, all other things been equal. What is going on here? I've checked ownership and permissions for synaptic -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 43 ...

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

And the weird thing is,after launching Synaptic a couple of times using gksudo synaptic, now the old launcher with synaptic-pkexec works again:anyone knows why?
Maybe something to do with permissions, after installing updates from a terminal instead of the GUI tools?

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

Just for peace of mind,I have no problem in changing the command field for the Synaptic launcher from

Code: Select all

synaptic-pkexec
to

Code: Select all

gksudo synaptic
I'd just need to be sure that is a glitch of some kind and not a sign of my system being somehow compromised.

Re: Bug in tomboy ?

Do you mean that after adding "tomboy" to Startup Applications, this issue is solved?
I mean,if you give the

Code: Select all

tomboy --new-note
command (either from terminal or by mouse gesture) when tomboy is already running, you don't get the

Code: Select all

Tomboy is already running. Exiting...

Re: Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

Well, gksudo synaptic does indeed work (I forgot about that, thanks for reminding me),still I don't understand what is going on:the command field in the synaptic launchers I have in the menu looks indeed correct synaptic-pkexec furthermore I'm reasonably sure I haven't modified anything here. So why ...

Issue with Synaptic after update in Mint 13

I've discovered that after the last updates in Mint 13 Mate,Synaptic isn't working properly:clicking its icon does nothing,so I've tried launching it from terminal by simply typing "synaptic",which sort of works,as Synaptic opens without administrative privileges, which is kinda expected, but then als...

Re: No messages in /var/mail/ in Mint 13

I should have specified that I was not referring to the actual mail client directory:I was thinking about the system messages like security warnings (like for instance wrong passwords),cron job reports and rkhunter reports that Ubuntu and Debian log to /var/mail/user and /var/mail/mail.
