Re: Thunderbird link does not open Firefox in Firejail

Hi Capella, if I understood your problem correctly, you mean that when you click a link in Thunderbird (running in Firejail) & Firefox is not already open, then the link opens an instance of Firefox but not in 'Firefox in Firejail'? I had a similar problem, where video files that I downloaded in...

Re: apps and scripts like fluxion, linset and wifite and many others cant detect wifi interface

Hi Hridam1, I'm afraid I can't offer much assistance here as I'm still running 17.2 but I believe the problem with your scripts & programs is probably due to the fact that the naming convention for network adapters has changed from Mint 18 onwards(?). Your wireless network connection used to be ...

Re: New UEFI Equipped Computer

It's normally me learning a lot from reading your posts Wharf Rat, so this is a little odd for me. I kinda feel like I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs here but, as I installed 17.3 on my Mum's new Skylake i5 earlier this year, I'd just like to say it went fine for me in UEFI mode. As mentioned,...

Re: Opinions on parts for a new high end mini ITX pc?

Quite a few lookers, but no takers yet i see....... I do appreciate my questions were pretty open-ended & also that a lot of us linux users take pride almost, in keeping some old tech out of the scrap heap. I haven't had a new PC myself since '99, making do on 2nd hand & hand-me-downs, so I ...

Re: Night Mode

Thanks Pierre. I've heard about these sorts of programs before, but having just installed on both pc & tablet I can say they make late night browsing much more pleasant.

Best regards,

Charles.

Opinions on parts for a new high end mini ITX pc?

Hi everyone, the time has finally come after about 3 yrs or so of umming and ahhing to treat myself to a new rig & actually build it! :D This will be be running GNU/Linux distros only. My current pc is an Acer Veriton1000 with intel coreduo @ 1.87GHz + 2Gb RAM and while it's great for everyday s...

Re: Advice regarding Sis Graphics Drivers [Solved]

Sorry it took a while for me to get back..... I got a really good deal on the RAM - 2 x 1Gb sticks, new on amazon on offer for less than £5 combined! As I'd saved so much I splashed out on a 240Gb Crucial SSD which was on special as well. The system now runs reasonably well for most general tasks, a...

Re: Linux Mint don't turn off the computer

More of an FYI but it is a known problem with the OS that Mint derives or forks from: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1594023 It's designated "Critical" which is something you don't see very often in launchpad and usually indicates that it's happening to one of the ...

Thanks for your opinion Pjotr, I'll pop down the local computer shop at the weekend & pick some up.

Will report back in a few days....

Re: Advice regarding Sis Graphics Drivers [Solved]

Oh... I've just looked at prices & was thinking of a 240Gb SSD & either 2 or 4(!?)Gb of RAM. I was going to ask if 4Gb would be overkill, but now you say you don't think the SSD would really help? I just want to give the best impression of Linux, so she doesn't become disheartened & give...

Re: Advice regarding Sis Graphics Drivers [Solved]

Well that went better than expected :) I tried to show Mint briefly to my friend & explained that Linux is not windows eg. much safer but different software & she seemed receptive to it & has agreed to give it a try after her holiday next week. I'm still a little hesitant to 'showcase' M...

Re: Advice regarding Sis Graphics Drivers [Solved]

I thought I'd checked & found 1GB RAM was max for this laptop but, having had a quick google again, I may well have been mistaken. Either way, I'm afraid I'm probably unlikely to bother trying. It's not my laptop & although I'm sure it would help, I don't think it would do enough. It just fe...

Re: Advice regarding Sis Graphics Drivers [Solved]

Just a little follow up after some testing..... Unfortunately I have to report that this graphics chipset is absolutely awful! I have never seen a 64Bit machine with such poor performance! I know it's not exactly a powerhouse & it's only got 1Gb of RAM but come on... It can run the OS ok...

Re: Linux Mint don't turn off the computer

I read that all the LM 17 versions were based in the same version of Ubuntu, so maybe LM 17 would give me the same result than 17.3. LM 13 would be too old for try it? :D Yes, LM 17.x is based on Ubuntu Trusty (14.04?), where as LM 13 is based on Ubuntu Precise 12.04 if memory serves. That why 17.x...

Re: Linux Mint Sarah 64bit on Ext SSd

He possibly meant something similar to my setup? I have the default folders in my home directory 'bound' to folders on a separate partition with a bind-home.conf file. I do this so I can boot different distros & still basically have all my data carry over. I know a /home partition is the norm, b...

This is one of those moments in IT where logic doesn't happen for me  Don't we all get those  It's usually me just missing something staring me right in the face, usually . Sometimes just taking a few days/weeks avoiding the issue & coming back with a clean head & fresh ideas...

Re: Linux Mint don't turn off the computer

Sorry to hear that .... Mint definitely is intalled & not running from the usb - there's no 'Install Linux Mint' icon on your desktop? I'm sure you have installed it ok, but just wanted to check? Personally, I have had occasional issues shutting down when live, which was why I asked. I guess you...

Re: Linux Mint don't turn off the computer

If you follow altair4's link above you'll see that unfortunately this is an upstream bug in Ubuntu & that command line shutdown commands fail too - as you've discovered :( You should be fine with 17.3 for now though. I'm sure that bug will be fixed for LM18 as soon as it's fixed in Ubuntu. Not s...

Re: Linux Mint don't turn off the computer

Sorry I don't know how to fix this problem :( As a temporary fix, have you tried shutting down via the terminal? sudo shutdown -h now You should be prompted for you password, but no characters will visibly appear on your screen when you type - this is normal. Then press 'Enter'. Hopefully that works...

Sorry I'm not knowledgeable enough to really help here, but as you asked for any ideas, if it happened to me I might; As you say it did work once, but then would not, you could try a new user profile in Firefox Try another browser - needs you to have it installed previously obviously Maybe try a 'us...
