Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

There was an official driver available for this card, I can't find it anymore on the website of Mediatek. There are a few copies still around on GitHub, such as this one . I'm not sure if it still installs on Mint 18, though. Sadly, I don't know either. Using anything command line in Linux is extre...

Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

This morning I decided to try the Beta to see anyway. Went to the Mint website and found the full release of Mint 18. So I downloaded it, burned to DVD and after several attempts, managed to get it to boot on the laptop. However, upon checking the WiFi, I found the same problem as with Mint 17.3. Th...

Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

This device is supposed to work. It did work fine in Windows? If you don't want to install Mint yet, you could try the Mint 18 beta version to see if there is any improvement. It should be easy to upgrade it to the final release once that one is released. Yes, it works fine in Windows. For one reas...

Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

Forcing a slower connection speed should not happen, wifi issues usually exist elsewhere. Most common is driver bugs, we can try upgrading the driver or installing another one. If you want help with wifi, please open Terminal from the menu, type the following command and press Enter: inxi -Nnz Then...

Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

OK, here's an update. I did a LiveDVD boot of Mint 17.3 64bit Cinnamon on the laptop. After it took nearly half an hour to load to desktop, I ran tests. Loaded programs, checked the sound, checked the internet etc. Everything was working fine, except for 1 problem. The WiFi adaptor. While connected ...

Re: Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

No, you didn't say or do anything wrong, but sometimes it takes a while to get an answer. You waited less than 12 hours before posting again. Maybe the person that knows the answers to your questions is at work now. Or maybe he or she is in a different time zone and is sleeping now. So, be patient....

Compaq CQ58 compatibility query

This will be a bit of a read.I apologise. So please bear with me. I eventually get to the point. I have a "Compaq CQ58" laptop which I've had for a couple of years, but now having problems with it. I don't know if it's Microsoft forcing Windows 8.1 to become a pain to use each time new WinUpdates ar...

Re: GTX 960 or 970

Nah. I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I'm thinking at some point I'll get a new monitor with quicker refresh/response times and set my current screen as a second one. The GTX 960 that I got has 4 DVI sockets.

Re: How big should swap partition be?

When I was starting out with Linux, I was told to always setup a swap partition otherwise it would cause problem when running Linux. If you're all basically saying that because I will have 16GB of memory, I either don't need a swap partition, or a small one at 2GB. Shall I just create a swap partiti...

How big should swap partition be?

I'll be building my new computer this weekend. A dual-boot between Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.10. Ubuntu is only temporary until Mint 18 comes out. When I come to install Linux on this system, how big should I make the swap partition? The Hard drive is 1TB in size. The physical memory is 16GB. In my c...

Re: GTX 960 or 970

Sorry it's been a while since I last posted to this thread. Been busy having trouble with current computer, ordering the computer components etc. I've ordered a Gigabyte GTX 960 4GB. As for lowering graphics in games, I tend to do that anyway. I also think I have another problem. Even if my computer...

Re: GTX 960 or 970

How many monitors do you have and what display resolutions? If only one monitor at FHD (1920x1080) or below, the 960 is sufficient for most games: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=nvidia-gf8-900&num=2 If you have or are considering a 4K monitor or using multiple monitors, the 970 ...

Re: GTX 960 or 970

I am actually leaning towards the 960 myself. Safer bet. I can also use the £100 saving to upgrade my hard drive.

Cheers anyway.

GTX 960 or 970

Greetings folks. I'm in a bit of a situation trying to decide on which graphics card to pick before next week when I buy the rest of the components for my new computer. A nVidia GTX 960 4GB or a GTX 970 for a £100 more. To begin with, I'm not a hardcore gamer. Probably the most hardware intensive ga...

Re: Hardware decisions for dual-boot

Thanks for the response. Two hours after I last posted in here, I found that an online calculator to find out how much power I would need. To select what CPU you're wanting, memory, graphics card, how many fans etc. It came up saying that a 400W supply would do, but a few reviews on how to select a ...

Re: why I hate Window (2016 edition)

Pointing back to the slow updates problem in this thread. For many, and several windows 8 and 8.1 computers, it was always slow from day one, long before Win10 came into the picture. Every time I set the computers (multiple laptops and desktops) to install the updates, I had to do things manually fo...
