Random freezing and on shutdown with laptop

I've recently got a friend to try Linux Mint 17.2, however so far it's not going too well. At first his computer refused to boot (stuck on mint logo) with peripherals connected - I upgraded his kernel from 3.16 to 3.19 and that problem was eliminated. There were other problems though that persisted ...

Re: Sound Settings Glitch

I can confirm that disabling volume-change sound in Sound Settings under the Sound Effects tab does not actually diable it.

Same version - Mint 17 64bit Cinnamon.

Re: Touchpad configuation not doing anything.

Clearly something's wrong with my driver - not knowing what to look for makes this mighty difficult, though... ~ $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics Reading package lists... Re: Touchpad configuation not doing anything.

The result of trying it is

Code: Select all

~ $ synclient VertTwoFingerScroll=1
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

Touchpad configuation not doing anything.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 with Mint 17 Cinnamon on it. The touchpad "works", as in I can move my pointer with it and tap-to-click, but changing those configurations in the mouse and touchpad config panel does not affect it's behaviour, at all. I really should be able to do two finger scrolling, or a...

Re: Problems with "new" Advanced partitioning system.

It means you need to mount the partition to /target, like this: su cd / mkdir target mount /dev/sda2 target cd target mkdir boot mkdir home mount /dev/sda1 boot mount /dev/sddX home That will install it in the "distribution" you've described. Then you'll just have to remember to set the system to mo...

UP8 ISOs

In my impatience, I've started browsing some mirrors, and sure enough, I found an ISO there, up since two days ago: [url=ftp://linuxfreedom.com/linuxmint/linuxmint.com/testing/]I found this.[/url] Scrolling down on that page there's a file named "linuxmint-201403-[DE]-dvd-[number]bit-rc.iso" Wait, 0...

Re: Cinnamon : Unable to change icon theme, etc

This might be relevant: if I do "cinnamon-settings-daemon" I get the following: [1386229862,000,xklavier.c:xkl_engine_start_listen/] The backend does not require manual layout management - but it is provided by the application (cinnamon-settings-daemon:8886): keyboard-plugin-WARNING **: Failed to se...

Cinnamon : Unable to change icon theme, etc

I have this problem occasionally when starting my LMDE laptop... Cinnamon starts with the wrong icon theme, and changing the icon theme has no effect. The font for filenames is black instead of white, and some other options cease to function. For example I cannot use the touchpad to click, even if t...

Kernel Panic while using Eclipse?

A friend of mine who uses LMDE recently started programming in Eclipse, but as he types his progs, a kernel panic occurs! [rimg]http://s18.postimg.org/4vpyfgqft/DSC_0143.jpg[/rimg] This only happened to him in eclipse on an otherwise stable system. He's running a cinnamon LMDE with UP 7 at 64bit, an...

Not to be a thread necromancer, but it happened again today.
Same thing I described in first post.

Does anyone have any idea yet? I'd rather avoid another reinstall.

3.2 kernel versus the 3.9 kernel?

I've searched online for any comparison between the 3.2 linux kernel and it's 3.9 counterpart but found nothing.
It's as if people aren't even discussing the differences.

I know the 3.9 kernel has better support for AMD/ATI stuff, but what other pros (or cons!) are there to upgrading?

Re: Installing LMDE on an SD card

Hi! "sdXY" must be replaced with the current devices - so "sdaW", "sdaY" or "sdcY" won't work. Please see my "help": To repair Grub"2" Boot from your Mint live medium Supposing hard disk /dev/sda and Mint root partition sdaX is not labelled IMPORTANT: replace X 4 times in 3 commands and sda, if you...

Re: Installing LMDE on an SD card

I tried reinstalling after it was given a label, and the installer reported an error configuring GRUB, noting that it must be configured manually. I then followed the steps to INSTALL grub, but I skipped two steps: A separate boot partition -sdaW- must be mounted, too: sudo mount /dev/sdaW /mnt/boot...
